Have you ever ridden one? IMHO the 1098 is not that great. I rode one up and down Azusa Canyon and was not impressed. I wrote a review on it on 600rr.net:
How many people who answered actually have ridden both (not directed towards anyone)? Yeah Ducati has the Italian stamp of approval and everyone says they're perfect and whatnot, but in my own personal experience they're not that great. I've ridden the regular 1098 and have an '06 600RR. Here's what I think of it.
I have mixed feelings about the 1098 because yes, it's beautiful and yes, it's a Ducati. But other than the hype, the name, and the styling, it was a bit of a disappointment to me.
Comfort and Control:
First thing I noticed on the 1098 when I sat on it was the sharp and narrow angles of the body. Where your thighs hug the tank is much sharper and narrower than the 600rr. It gave me an insecure feeling, almost as if I was going to slip off the bike in a corner. I didn't really like that feeling, but I'm sure it's just because I was used to the 600rr tank.
Secondly, I noticed was that the clip ons were in a more aggressive stance (lower) than the RR. I liked the feeling of these clip ons and I felt I had slightly more control over the bike than the RR. The front brake and clutch controls were easily reached and felt very smooth.
The third thing I noticed, and probably the most important, was that either the rear brake lever or the shifter (or both - I forget) felt too close to the tank. They were hard to find with my feet (I wear Sidi boots) which can be very dangerous if you needed one or the other quickly.
Also, after a short while, the seat got really hot. I've heard that this is common in the 1098's (and probably the 848's too) and I didn't like it at all. People complain about the 600RR getting hot during rides because of the undertail exhaust. The heat from the RR is nothing compared to the heat from the 1098 exhaust. Hopefully they fixed this with the newer 1098's, 848's, and 1198's.
Performance:
The very first thing I noticed about riding the 1098 (performance wise) was the dry clutch. This was both new and strange territory for me as I've only ridden bikes with wet clutches. The dry clutch was choppy and made the bike feel like it was going to die on me when taking off from a dead stop. I did not like this at all, but I'm sure it's just a preference thing and something to get used to.
The 1098 is supposed to have around 160 hp coming out of it's L-twin engine, but it felt sluggish to me. It really didn't feel like 60 more hp than my RR, but then again it could have just been such a smooth power band that I didn't notice myself flying up and down the mountain.
The Ducati feels light and agile. Just sitting on it while not moving and swaying it back and forth, it feels just about the same weight as my RR. For a liter bike it seems slim and nimble.
Despite the things I did not like about the 1098, I love how it handles. The bike I was riding had it's wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Power 2ct's (which I have never ridden with before). I currently have Pirelli Diablo Corsa 3's on my RR and the tires feel very different. The 1098 just fell into the turns very easily (although I hear this is common with the 2ct's) and held it's lines very well. Because it was a new bike to me, I wasn't completely comfortable with the controls at first and there were a few times I got a bit nervous and thought I was going to lose my line. The Ducati held on nicely though and as the ride went on, I got more and more comfortable and more and more confident.
Afterthoughts:
Overall, I thought the Ducati 1098 was mediocre. I simply wasn't impressed with it, minus the handling. It's a beautiful bike with nice features, but a bit disappointing in the saddle, although I'm sure that more riding time with the 1098 would help change my opinion. BUT, for the amount you pay for the bike, I would expect little (if any) disappointments which the 1098 seemed to have quite a few. Personally if I was set on getting a liter bike, I'd rather get a Japanese one and put the money saved towards gear, mods, tracktime, or a vacation. My 600 is more than enough for me at the moment, but a little more torque couldn't hurt...:D
I hope this helps man. If you have any friends with the 1098, I suggest you convince them to let you ride it before you get one of your own. I would personally stick with the Japanese liter bike (if you're set on a liter bike). They're cheaper to maintain, cheaper to fix, cheaper to buy, but then again they're not Italian. But like I've stated above, just ride it to see for yourself so you can make a better decision.
Your 749 is sexy though, I'm sad to hear you're selling it...:(
