Hi everybody, I am new to this board and I have a couple questions before i want to buy a celica.
Well i guess what i want to know is it worth buying a celica dn putting money in it abd winning races?
Not really into a show car, i am for speed. And i just want to know is that taking it to the track and knowing what i have under there is it going to run great.
(Sorrry if i sound stupid right now, lol. It's really late, long day, and the monitor is a blur)

what type of racing are you planning on doing? to be completely honeset, i wouldn't buy the celica again as a "fast" car unless it was just for autocross or road racing. the GTS is a quick car but if you want something that's gonna be really fast for drag racing you should probably look for something else (wrx...plus it will handle good too). and not to mention, i'm still pissed about the reliability of my celica but i wont go into that now. good luck with your choice though.

welcome to the board. it all depends on what kind of work you're willing to put into it.

i'm not on AIM so i can't talk to you that way, but i'll give a quick rundown here. and note that a good percentage of 7th gen celi's are completely perfect, its just that mine and a few of my friends that have GTS's are having quite a few irritating things with ours. but for the most part, they're probably alright cars. anyways, after about 20,000 miles my syncros were gone in the transmission and i had to get a whole new tranny. also before that i had to get the belt tensioner pulley replaced. there was also the stock cd player that stopped working, under-car plastics deciding to fall out, the drivers side seatbelt no longer pulling iteslf in after it's un-buckled, a big crack in the rubber area over the drivers door, the rubber area in the passenger door coming out, seat fabric tearing and seperating badly, and then countless interior rattles. then there's the most annoying thing, the constant bogging the car does. put simply, i give it gas and lots of time nothing happens. the car will rev but it wont move, and on a few occasions the revs have dropped. some blame it on my CAI but i had it for a while (6 or so months) before anything happened. it also just recently triggered a check engine light that won't go away. and i've tried all the common stuff (cleaning MAF, filter, etc...) and none of it did anything. sorry for all the ranting and hope i dont discourage you if you did really want one, but just thought i'd give you a heads up on that.

If you want to get the most out of the car, wait till the '03s come out in Aug/Sept. Their rev limiters will be raised back to 8400 (now at 7800), meaning the car will be considerably faster. Only the '02s and late '01s have this early limiter.

The only unknown at this point is how the throttle response will be. The throttle will be controlled electronically by the computer in the '03s (drive by wire) instead of using the regular cable. Some people have driven cars with the same technology, and said there was a slight delay between when the pedal was pressed and when the engine responded. Other cars' responses were instant. It all comes down to how Toyota programs it.

Something else to look forward to in '03 is HID's. You won't have to spend money replacing burnt out PIAA, Hyper, etc. bulbs every few months! :gap:

Blue Thanks for telling me that about the '03's. A question for you, how much are they going to run? skatamatic, no you did not "discourge" me from getting a celica .. still going for it, now i am just wondering if i should get a '01 GTS or a 02' GTS (money issue) the cheapes '02 GTS celica that i can find is about 15k (if anyone knows of one for cheaper please tell me) Thanks you guys

i'd go for the 03 if any. the 02's have a lowered rev limiter (7800 rpm as opposed to 8300 like the 00's and 01's) which i've heard slows you down a good bit.

So the 00's and 01's have arev of 8300? I did not know that i that those were also 7800. In that cause would it be better to just get a '00 or '01. Hey skatamatic I seen the pictures, nice. What size rims and tires are on there?

yea, typically an 00 or 01 would be better but it seems as if there were a few 1st year flaws in them. the 03's seem like they might be really cool if the whole throttle issue is alright. and thanks on the compliments, the rims are 18" ALT x-philes on yokohama paradas.

the bogging i'm talking about is when you give the car gas but it wont move. you can feel the engine "working" but the power is not getting transmitted to the wheels. and MuleDoe, i'm from around atlanta, GA. and sorry, i dont think ALT makes those in white right now. you could always get them powder coated on your own though, which would probably be really cool.

Yeah skatamatic, i was thinking about the power coat thing, but i have some other rim's in mind ... *hmmm*

Welcome to the board. I have an '02 GTS and really hate the low rev limiter. It is harder for me to stay in lift in every shift. If you really want to go for speed, then I suggest that you either get an '01 or '03 Celica so you won't have to deal with the low rev limiter. Hope this helps.
