View Full Version : neon

So I bought a nice little 20 inch blue neon for my grill, thinking it would be an easy install... wired it all up, even put it with a nice little switch, and failure could be seen for miles.
I wired it up with my halos so that they would come on at the same time when the switch is on... the halos come on, but not the neon. So i think, hmm, maybe the neon is broken. So i run a wire from the battery to the neon cord, works fine. Then I think, oh, perhaps I cant run both of them to the switch at the same time, so i run the neons cords through to the switch, and nothing.
Is there something im missing here? can neons not go through a switch or am i just retarded? I spent 3 hours in the dark trying to figure this **** out and im ready to castrate myself.
thanks for any advice

I like your attitude. Anyways, yes neons can go through a switch. Question, do your neon wires consist of a +,-, and ground. If it does you would need a switch that has a ground on it. If not it should work just fine with a 2 prong switch.

I figured as such... don't know why it wouldnt go through a switch.
It just has a + and a - wire... the - is grounded near the neon itself, then the + goes all the way into the interior and onto the - of the switch, and another wire goes from the + of the switch to the battery. Should work... the halos do, i dont get why the neons dont.
Could it be possible that the switch isn't suited for the amount of amps from the neon but it is for the halos?

I would take the positives from both tha halos and the neon and splice them together along with the positives and then run it through the + - prongs on the switch.

then again i'm not sure how the wiring on the halos work.

thats exactly what i did! I wired the positives for the halos and neons to the switch... and the halos are the only thing that came on.
Is there any way that I need a different switch?

ok heres what to do, take the negative wires for the neons and hook them to a ground somewhere near the neons i.e the frame under the plastice midle engine piece were the latch is then take the positive wires and run them to your switch and wala your neons will come on with your halos. also not good idea to wire things in the dark lol

When you tested the neon did you keep the ground where it is? Could just be a bad ground. Did you try it on a switch by itself? Did you try switching the wires up on the switch?

Yes yes and yes... did all of that.
I got so mad i just wired it to the fog light fuse (kept the ground where it was before) and it works fine now. I don't get it. Is it possible the switch just doesn't work for the neon but it does for the halos? im beyond confused.

is the switch you are useing a +,+, - switch? a 3 prong switch that has a - prong a constant + prong and a + prong for turning it on? or is it a 2 prong + and - switch?

Hmmm. It has 3 prongs. It says positive, accessory, negative.

the constant power goes to positive your neon power wire goes to accessory
I'm surprised you didn't delete all of your threads!

are you serious??? then i just run a ground to the negative on the switch?
That is the one thing i didnt try... the switch has an led at the end and for some reason i thought the accessory was that and if you wanted it to work you had to run a power wire to it.
I'll just castrate myself for being a donk.
thanks for the help!

I figured it out! I went through two switches to finally get it set (i had it all wired up and when i was putting the switch in in just snapped), but it works/looks really good now.
Thanks everyone for the advice!
