I have that camera.

I think the camera works great, renders images nicely.

The only gripe I have (which is why I'm upgrading to a different one soon :wiggle: ) is that the view finder is small. It's not like point and shoot small, but it's small. I guess it doesn't matter much if you're going to always use autofocus, but I like to manual focus and this small viewfinder makes it difficult.

Another thing is if you have big hands, this camera will be hard for you to hold. It's one of the smaller D-SLRs. You should go to a Samy's or something and check out their display cameras to see which one fits you better.

Otherwise I think this camera is fantastic. Oh and there's no spot metering (it is useful sometimes).

Maybe you should go with the XSi or the T1i which has a bit more features so you won't grow out of it as quickly. The XSi is more expensive by a couple hundred dollars. There's plenty of used deals on Craigslist, btw.

P.S. The T1i has HD video recording :naughty: But the autofocus is troublesome.

How much of this essay are you going to read?

Thank you very much for a very informative review.. Wow the T1i sounds very tempting with the HD video recording.. which i need very much. Any more info on that? Why is the autofocus troublesome? Oh and on the Canon Rebel XS 10.1 MP From costco , do u have any pictures that you have taken without editing that you wouldnt mind sharing. With\without autofocus please..

And to answer your last queston, when someone sends me a message or is trying to teach me\ give advice i read every word of it. And yes i read everything you wrote

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Canon/canon_eos500d.asp

That site has all the technical specs of the camera. It barely come out so the price for the kit is $899 and the body only (which has not yet been released) is $799.

Autofocus during video recording mode is very slow. When I was playing around with it at Samy's Cameras, when you press the refocus button, it focuses to infinity then as close as it can before it locks down on the object you were pointing at. I was only using it for about 10 minutes so I might be operating it incorrectly :shrugs: I'm not sure if it automatically refocuses when you point at other objects but it didn't seem like it did when I was using it.

The salesperson at Samy's told me the max time it can record videos at a time is 30 minutes.

I think autofocus really depends on your lens, not so much on the camera.

Look at the Socal Photography thread. I posted pictures taken from the XS in there, none of them are edited other than the resize that imageshack does. I don't know which are autofocused or manual but really doesn't matter.
