Ack, it was raining pretty heavy this past wednesday on my way to work. I was driving and I went into a curve on a two-lane freeway when my car started to lose grip, so I tapped on breaks... err bad move, I plowed into the side of a big white Astro Mini Van, didn't touch the Van hardely, but it crushed my right front fender, bent part of the bumper, scuffed the door and mirror. *SIGH* I only had my Kaminari kit on the way from MB Autosport... I will post up pics soon..

So what is the best way to recover from a hydroplane?

IMHO, this is not a real answer, but the best way is not to hydroplane in the first place. Once you hydroplane, you have zero grip and cannot do anything until the tires are back on the ground. If you do hydroplane, don't touch the gas, and definately don't touch the brakes, and hope there is nothing ahead of you that you need to avoid. Try to plan ahead and read far down the road. If it sneaks up on you... good luck.

Yeah, what fluid_gts said. Don't hit the gas, but def don't hit the breaks. You can try engine braking, but I wouldn't recommend it. You just have to be a bit more careful out when it's raining, and I always slow down coming up on turns whether it's snow or rain.

yea, dont turn the wheel dont hit the gas like i do ( cuz i like to do mini burn outs here and there) and dont hit the breaks just keep it straight and let it slow down, oh and slow then when theres water on the road, also check ur treads make sure your not out of tread cuz then ull be hydroplaning with the littlest amount of water

Just to add one mre voice...
what they all said. All you can do is ride it out. Keep it straight and dont vary throttle and gas and wait for traction. Ideally you want to keep your vehicle speed on the speedo as close to whatever your actual speed is as you can, or just a bit below. The main thing is NO sudden application of anything.
The risk of hydroplaning is always worst when teh rain first begins to fall and all the oils on the road start coming to the surface but haven't been washed away yet so be most carefull then.

depends on how and where. if you're going pretty fast when hydroplaning, just steer and pray.
if you're not going that fast, i've had success with waiting until i think i have enough space in front of me, and the car is sliding *forward*, and then i slam the gas (pump if no ABS). you can do the same in a turn, if you're going really slowly (it shouldn't hydroplane, but my tires are really gone so mine does).

heh.......i hydroplaned at least 4 or 5 times just driving to the seattle airport and back at 50-60 mph...........wierd......i had almost full tread and i was going completely straight......guess my car doesn't do well in small puddles...

Well see the situation was that if I didn't turn, I would run into the van in the lane beside of me since it was a lil bit ahead of me, or go careening off into a telephone pole. I think this Toyos F4Z suck ass, I am definatly not buying another set.

Actually there is way....
Basic principle of surviving hydroplane is be calm(hell you can in that situation)
2nd turn the steering wheel towards where your car is moving...
3rd no sudden breaking nor accelerating...
Finally when your cars slows down hopefully... break or accelerate slowly.....
This is on the driving manual where you study and take the permit's test.... -.-;;;;;

Every car I've ever wrecked has been because of sudden hydroplaneing. Now I always get the best wet weather tires that I can. They really help.

its not the car that makes u hydroplane.....its the tires...... get some good tires and u will definitely hydroplane alot less.

Dooly is right. you have to turn to the direction of travel. The options of brake and gas are realted to the trade-off between control to avoid obstacles/oncoming traffic and distance available. If you are more concerned about distance, then you can slam on the brakes but you will have no control what so ever (this is a rare scenario). The other option beyond steering into the direction of travel is to steer slightly off the direction, towards a place that his safer to hit, and then gun it. That is usually done to avoid oncoming traffic, or avoid poles, but you are generally screwed.

never press the brakes in an hydroplane unless you ABS.
without Abs slowly relase gas to get straight then when straight press gas softly to regain control then press the brakes to slow then stop
with ABS then apply steady pressure to the brakes to come to a full stop i know ive had it happen...

There's always a spot in the carpool lane coming home from school where there's this huge puddle when it rains. I used to hydroplane on it every time back when I had my stock Yokes, but ever since I've had the RE730s (I didn't have the money for the S0-3s) I don't hydroplane over that puddle anymore :)
