View Full Version : Grinding?

People often talk of grinding when switching gears on this forum. Is this when you change gears and feel a slight resistance when you pop it into gear, or is it more pronounced?

Most of the time when I switch gears it slides in with no resistance. Sometimes I feel a little resistance though. I personally wouldn't call it grinding though. I did experience grinding ONCE when I was rolling backwards and attempted to put the car in reverse!

Just asking because I am not sure if I should be worried about the "resistance" I am feeling. Oh, I have a GT but I assume this would be common to both GTs and GTSs

Thanks,
Greg

Grinding into reverse is not a big deal, especially since you are rolling.

Reverse lacks a synchro so it's not trying to match speeds or anything when you are pushing it into reverse.

I wouldnt' worry about grinding until it actually happens to you. If you want to help protect your gearbox change out to synthetic fluid like the stuff from www.amsoil.com

and concentrate on NOT powershifting.

Thanks for tips. (now it's time to use search and make sure I understand what powershifting is! )

Powershifting is when you are just slamming HARD through the gears.

Basically you are not letting the synchro's do their job when you do this, you slam through them more or less.

You will be fine for awhile doing this, but you will grind eventually and it'll suck when you do because you'll have to take the car in and have them fixed... (your synchros' and possibly a gear or two )
