my car has been in the dealership for almost a month now...getting complete bottom end replaced...anyways they replaced it and now when they tried to start it the car will not idle correctly and unless i give it gas it will drop in rpm and will eventually stall...the dealership still has the car and believe it may be the timing chain b/c of the vvt-i....can anyone shed some light on this and what the problem could be....also when they finish the work...they couldn't find reverse in my car..wtf!! they have to take everything apart to find out why but they are not sure either... =(....please help i haven't had my car for almost a month now!!! =(

They probably have the cams timed up wrong. Tell them to call the Help line at Toyota or something, or to sublet it to someone with a brain. Its easy to screw up base cam timing if you don't know what your doing because the manual is confusing. Tell them tohat the dot on the exhaust cam will NOT line up directly opposite the dot on the intake cam. They should use teh vertical marks on teh tops of the gears and align them to teh paint marks on the timing chain. Once they do this the exhaust dot will be above teh dot for the intake cam. This is NORMAL.
as for reverse - they probably put in the upgraded shift kit or a new tranny and didn't change out the cables and shifter itself. The new gates require a greater range of motion than the old cables and shifter are capable of.

They are blowing smoke up yer butt. I used to work at a Toyota Dealer, Techline calls go through in a matter of minutes... theres no "waiting for them to get back to you". You call, ask, they answer, done deal.

fuel injectors. i had something similar, could be related. um, a faulty injector made the car occasionally choke at idle. my rpms would drop but i'd get a check engine light with cylinder missfire. anyways that might be a long shot, but they can do a pressure check on your injectors.

j3adseed,
hey anything is possible...i will definitely keep this in mind as well..they did say that they do expect to have my car done sometime this week....so very hopeful...
griffin,
they r a pretty big dealership and according to the service manager there...he told me the tech tried taking it apart and figuring it out like 10x but still can't get it right...so the wait continues for a toyota hotline tech to call to walk the other tech through the process to hopefully find the problem and resolve it.. =)
