This problem started happening yesterday about halfway through my drive home from work (25 miles). Every time I downshift into 4th gear, it makes a light scratching sound. I thought this was just me being clumsy with the clutch, until I did it again and made sure the clutch was on the floor. It only does it when I downshift from a higher gear. I can put it in 4th and back to neutral and back to 4th again and it doesn't do it. I have no idea what's going on... I can feel the vibration in the stick as it grinds into place. It's not loud like a normal gear grind, it's more like a ziiiip sound.

Any ideas? Hope this isn't one of those $1000 repairs.

Other info: My last oil change was about 2 months ago, and at the same time I had the gearbox oil drained and replaced.

Sounds like your synchros are wearing out. How many miles do you have on your car?

I think it's got about 22,000.

You sure they put oil back in your tranny and the right grade???

Bad syncro's for sure...2nd and 4th are known for going out in the 6speed...I had mine replaced under factory warrentee for "defective syncros"...

I dont think they're defective, I think that they just were not designed for the high rpm shifting...

the new 2002 transmission has reinforced syncro plates (or double syncros or something like that)
sam from TxCC had his tranny replaced.

i would find a way to have it done tooe xcept that id want my clutch and LSD and flywheel to be transferred over.
