OK...i guess this could be more of a physics question, but here goes.
With a short shifter...is it only shortening the lengt of the shift rod itself? Or is it acctually changing the pivot point. Seems to me that by shortening the top ot the lever...you still have the same amount distance between gears as with a longer one?
Maybe i am way off...but again...thats what this place is for right? Just curious because i saw one guy who made his own short shifter by simply cutting a little bit off the top of his shifter, re threaded it and calls it a short shifter...would that really work?

look at it this way do you move a smaller ratchet as far as a long one when you turn a bolt. no you move the longer ratchet more, but have more leverage. the short shifter moves less but is stiffer...in thoery

A short shifter DOES change the pivot point of the lever. The height on top is shortened, while the bottom is lengthened.

Otherwise, you could just cut off one or two inches off the top of the stock shifter lever and save $100. Doing that would just increase the amount of effort needed to move the shifter.

no the pivot point actually is not in the same place, at least not with the TWM SS. Below the pivot point is longer than stock, and above is shorter.

Thats about what i figured. It seemed to me that just shortening the top wouldn't make a whole hell of a lot of difference.
Thanks.
