Hey Guys,
My C60 broke on me at 14PSI. No 3rd gear and pieces scored everything in the tranny. Ive had the car out only for 1 week; the was quick. Im installing my spare 5 speed tranny. I guess ill be saving up for the E153 swap. how did that swap go with us celica guys????? who is officially supplying it now?
Cheers!

How much HP+Torque are you making? Did you have any wheel hop when it happened?

Im really affraid of the wheelhop.... it even hops in third on bad quality/slightly dusty road. what do you think i can do to protect my tranny from the destruction caused by this hopping?
Wheel hop = dead transmissions.

I guess i will be going down that route after all.. E153 is the way to go.. TB500 did you stay giving your tranny a hard time or did it just go all of a sudden? Any idea how many miles on the tranny?

I just snapped my C60 diferential and the finaldrive shaft just with one downshift @ 8psi supercharged :(

so how does a downshift blow up a transmission??? Some of these stories aren't whole...

downshift into the meat of the power band real hard and it puts ALOT of stress on the transmission very suddenly, even worse if you break traction and wheel hop when it happens.

no...downshifting properly with a rev match does nothing....there is no WOT status...no boost...no nothing. Someone isn't driving properly

supercharger has boost any time the thing is spinning, if you let off gas, put clutch in, shift, let clutch out/get on gas you can do it all and not get out of supercharger boost, it'll just vent boost for the second that the throttle is closed, but as soon as the throttle opens back up boost is there again instantly (close to instantly). if you're breaking traction on a hard down shift then you can get a little wheel hop going and break the differential no problem. :o:
but i am wrong once in a blue moon.

I can tell you that you're wrong this time...a downshift does not explode transmissions unless it's done improperly....there is no power at that point in time, the throttle is pretty much next to closed. I don't know people who go WOT just to downshift, and if they are doing that, then their tranny has repaid them for it

No what broke that guys diff was abuse from before. The stock diff is garbage. I broke mine with only intake and exhaust at the dragstrip shifting into second. There was a guy on 9th gen corolla who broke one pulling his car off of the street going to work. The units form stress cracks then one downshift can cause them to break. My brother broke his timing belt downshifting in his integra it's just a sudden change of rpm it will find the weak link..
andrii your diff was already doomed before you downshifted it. Buy a LSD. The stock diff is garbage.

I had the MWR MonkeyGrip LSD installed and been using it for like 2-3months without problems been to the dragstrip and drove it hard! anyway I was just driving at 90kmph in 5th and when i downshifted to 3th gear and i did not rev-match or WOT shift and it broke my finaldrive and the differentialdrive and the diff-gear.. I can upload pics to show u the damage.

Sorry to hijack this thread...
well why not??
I wasn't at the track and I was just cruising so i dont see why i should revmatch while downshifting at crusing speeds... It probably broke becaus of its earlier abuse i have been couple of times on the dragstrip and 22laps at nurburgring and some hard driving WOT shifting so i was just waiting to break my box...

Exactly. People spend way too much time worrying about exactly what they were doing at the time of failure.

im using the 5 speed tranny i have, why do i have a feeling it holds up better than the 6 speed. it feels more rigid. it doesnt have any limited slip and im not experiencing wheelhop with this thing. whats your say on this?
smaay, i talked to Hydra, he should be contacting you soon for the E153 swap.

TB500.. Did you have to custom fabricate anything to fix the 5 speed gearbox? I got hold of a 5 speed and im thinking of installing this tranny till my e153 kit arrives..

I doubt it. I have seen my fair share of the 5-speed trannies crapping out, and this is with a 140hp engine. Never experienced it myself so I do not know the conditions they crapped out under, but don't expect it to handle any more power than the 6-speed.

Everything inside the C6X and C5X is basically the same size, the only difference between the two is the C6X has another gear and bearings that sit inside the rear cap of the trans that are connected to the gear shafts to help with shaft flex. What I have noticed is that the final gear takes a lot of abuse and is worked loose from the differential. Using a thread locker or possibly spot welding the final gear to the diff could help ensure that there is minimal flex. I am currently experamenting with a few of these ideas I have seen used on other platforms.

so how come people who broke their c60 after 2 days, didnt break it after they changed to the GT tranny?
bt216
02-23-2010, 12:21 PM
^because they arent driving it the same. After blowing your trans, you will uncontrollably drive less harsh. Unless youre mwr.

Just like I bet my new 00 high mileage c60 will last longer than my low mileage 03+ c60...I'm not going to abuse this one.

the transmissions break for the following reasons...
Abuse
high hp/tq
Lanching hard
Racing
Age

less abuse, or maybe because they don't drive it as hard knowing they have a ticking bomb for a transmission... who knows. its all speculation at this point

BC my engine exploded once I put the 5 speed in. I would have to go with everyone else on this one, once you break something you most likely wont drive in the same manner as it was broken, unless your me who goes through 3 6 speeds and an engine in a calender year.
