What was the officer's name btw? should be on the ticket if you can read it. Warner just called me a few minutes ago... he ALSO got busted for recon today because of his muffler. The cop also gave him a ticket for the clear bumper lenses and blue lights, and was gonna give him something for the spoiler too. Cop also claimed that all exhausts are illegal, and recon only checks headers. What an idiot. Recon has nothing to do with either mufflers OR headers OR intakes... if you go down with just an I/H/E combo on your car, they'll simply give you a sheet of paper with a big NO RECON NEEDED stamp on it.

Warner had already gone down to get that sheet, and the officer confiscated it.

first of all an aftermarket exhaust system DOES NOT REQUIRE A RECON PERMIT. JUst like clint said they'll just issue you a "NO RECON REQUIRED" yellow paper. only if you alter your suspension (ex. - lowering) or go BIGGER than 2 sizes up on rim size (ex. - 16" up to an 18") will you be issued a recon "sticker". Trust me about the exhaust cause I work at ESH. IMO recon is a big hassle but I guess you pay the price to be legal on this island. If any of the board members have any ?'s you can come to Exhaust Systems Hawaii ( king st. location) on thursday or saturday to ask me or call 946-7110 and ask for me....peace

Sorry to hear about that. I think all of us had a fair share of running into the police a few times. It is a pretty Sh*tty feeling afterwards. I remember I got pulled over by Mike H*nt. I got three tickets and I had to get a public defender. I got ticketed for falsifying my recon, clear lights, and speed flashers. The first judge I had, was going to give me one year in jail and he said it was a felony charge to falsify my recon. (*Which I didn't)... So I called upon a public defender at that time, and at the next trial she mentioned about the car not being in my name and for some great miracle my case got dismissed. I hope all goes well. If worse comes to worse you may want a public defender or an attorney.

Which lites have a bluish tint in them? The headlights and fogs are super whites they should be ok. The only thing I can think of is the clear corner lites. They don't even look that blue though.

I would definetely contest it. I hate the police too. All they are good for is pulling ppl over. I got pulled over at least six times from them with the accord modified and stock... a few times with the accord even though it was bone stock. They just like to harass us, when they could be fighting crime and sh*t.

On one occasion ticketed for:

2. Reckless driving
3. Speeding: 125 in a 55
4. No recon
5. Expired insurance card in car

Ok YES I was racing my CRX against a friend in his Civic. We both got nailed by some fast ass cops... I tell you don't underestimate what they have under the hood because my needle was buried past 125 and this guy came flying up like I was standing still.

It was 3 in the morn and I was still wet behind the ears.

Anyway, I fought the case in court, and spent a year going back and forth, and like Mark got myself a public defender. I took a "Deferred Acceptance of Nolo Contendere" plea (DANC plea), basically not admitting guilt but throwing yourself at the mercy of the court for probation, was required to stay ticket free for a year and after the year was up I had my record wiped clean of all offenses and the case was dismissed.

On another memorable occasion I got:

1. Failing to use a turn signal
2. Illegal tint
3. "loud muffler"
4. blue bulbs in turn signals
5. no recon
6. expired insurance card (again!)

Mike Hunt, the *******. I was pulling into Waipio Gentry from Kam Hwy to drop a friend off. The lane I was in was a right turn only lane with a big arrow, if you go straight you smack a light pole. Hunt told me he pulled me over because I failed to signal that I intended to go right, and when I told him it was a right turn only lane, he said I still had to signal anyway. The rest of the story I've already told before, so I'll skip it since most of you have heard it.

Bottom line, I fought it in court and got everything dismissed except the tint, which was blatantly illegal and I had no excuse for. I explained that I had bought the bulbs from Speedgear in Ala Moana and didn't know they were illegal. They flashed white, and I bought them because I thought they looked nice... I told them there were several other ppl there buying the same bulbs. You wouldn't figure something illegal would be selling in the largest mall in Hawaii.

On both occasions I had tickets for expired insurance cards, all I had to do was show my current one. I always seem to forget to put it in the car. The exhaust I actually had one of those "NO RECON REQUIRED" sheets for, but didn't show it to the officer so he couldn't take it away. I let him write the ticket, then showed the judge the sheet and had it dismissed.

The judge said she would drop the blue lights if I paid the fine for the tint, so I said ok. It wasn't a moving violation and a small fine so what the hell. Hunt luckily just gave me a ticket for tint period, and not a ticket for each window tinted.

The failing to use a turn signal citation was dropped too.

My first ticket ever was given to me by a cop who came out of nowhere and paced my ass on Kam Hwy in Pearl City at 12 at night (without his lights on!). I thought it was a Honda trying to make trouble and the guy was less than 6 feet from my rear bumper with noone else on the road in three lanes of traffic. I sped up to put some distance and when I finally reached 55 the blues came on. I fought it in court because I thought that was really unfair, even tho I really didn't have a defense. The first judge ruled against me and told me I was stupid to speed up. I was pissed off like hell and appealed. The second time I went to court the prosecuting attorney wanted to schedule a trial and bring the officer in, but the judge scolded her and apologized for wasting so much of my time. He dropped the charge right then and there.

I've gotten MANY tickets in my history of driving, but only paid once for that illegal tint. The lesson I have to teach is that you can only win by fighting your case in court. If you don't you automatically lose, and the system which is full of shyt wins. One thing on your side is that court proceedings cost the state a lot of money, and they really don't have enough to waste on anyone who's gonna go the distance to fight a blue light case. Especially when they're partially at fault for not regulating the sale of such items in a more effective manner. It costs the state more money to schedule a trial than it can recover by winning... so in most cases if you push the limits the state will back off or offer you a deal.

Don't worry too much, as bad as it seems the odds are actually in your favor.

I hate cops too! i haven't been pulled over for recon yet *knock on wood* but i have been pulled over for "speeding" even though I'm going down a residential hill with no side street and like rarely any houses, it's the hill leading upto a rich place like hawaii loa ridge or someplace like that, with one car in front of me and two behind me yet I'm the one that gets pulled over just because i have a "modified car." It's so gay. They're was a older celica behind me and a mitch's mr2 sypder behind me as well and the cop came from behind so of course the older celica pulls over but he doesn't go after him, mitch pulls over but he doesn't go after him either, then I pull over and he give me a speeding ticket for going 40 in a 25 on a downhill, while they're is still a car in front of me that is going the same speed as me too. Oh btw mitch and the older celica was also going the same speed, it was basically the four cars, one right behind the other, going downhill at about the same speed but only I get pulled over and ticketed! Then the cops give me a lecture about how I should be able to "handle" my car if i were to modify it. So much bullshizzz. Stupid cops.

hey dark, cops are just doing there jobs maybe if you did the right thing and just go to the recon shop you will not have any problems with recon. i mean why complain when there is a solution to this recon confusion, just get the recon. sure recon is a joke but if you get the sticker then you will be legal, and also you wouldnt have to complain and be angry all the time.

i went to the recon shop with my mr2 long time ago and they were very nice and with all the aftermarket things i had on my car, they only said for me to put my license plate higher and also tighten down my intake system.

Hmm....Alex, Didn't u not read that postings? I had a paper that showed I didn't need recon from my muffler. I got that legal document from Recon. When i showed it to the Cop he pulled some bull**** excuse and took it away from me. Cops in Waikiki are just out to cite people...especially yesterday for some odd reason...If they want to give u a ticket, they will. He showed me a paper that said any exhaust system is Illegal....u go figure. What's there to do?

well that is why i try and avoid waikiki. but if you had a paper from recon that said you didnt need a recon for your exhaust , teh cop had no right taking the paper away from you. if that happened to me i probably gone to jail becuase i would have asked for it back and argued with him, and you know local cops think they are so bad arse , right, eventhough they weight like 250lbs and stand 5feet and cant run for sh!t and you wonder how did they get into HPD and then you say oh i know how they got in , its probably because since the state pays them so low and people do not sign up for HPD and the state is lacking cops they just hire anyone willing to apply, even thou they are overweight and incompetent, untrusting, unfair, interigtless. oh well this is hawaii for you.

Recon doesnt really help me much because i basically got nailed for the tint and the lights, so to apex that *** basically pulled me over because he felt like it, he couldnt have seen my tint because i had my windows down and he couldnt have seen my lights because he had come from behind me...i mean if they really wanted to, they can pull you over for anything even from hanging something off your rear view mirror...at the same time this beamer zoomed passed me, probably an executive, so why does he not chase the speeder and come after my ass...and the thing is im a pretty speed aware driver so why is this pig giving me all of these arbitrary tickets when he could be stopping banks from being robbed or some gurl from being raped? Besides im not so much angry because of the money its the fact that i have to waste my ****in time going to court ... if i didnt need to i would have paid it all yesterday

actually some cops will say you falsified your recon even thougn you are legal. I know a couple of guys who had that happen to them. The cop made them scrape off the recon sticker and the cop took the papers.

Recon need to be over hauled. Thr rules date way back till the early 70's. Some of the things that are illegal come on stock cars now. I remember when the recon sticker was a window sticker.

One of the many stories I heard was that his wife was killed by a Honda and now that whenever he see kids or ppl with Honda's or imports he has a hatred towards those type of cars. My friend mentioned to me several times that his friend on the force knows Mike Hunt and he isn't too well liked within the HPD.

waikiki district basically runs down from kalakaua...you know from like cinerama side to the zoo side. its a small district to cover.

from now on everyone should hold a small recorder in their car for officers like Hunt. Before he asks to see your license and registration ask him if you can record this conversation. If he says no record it anyway. that should put a cap on his mouth....ha ha ha
