I was the dealership today getting an oil change. And i was looking around the lot and came across a MR2 Spyder. I always thought they had an GTS engine, but the sticker said VVTI, so meaning no Lift. Or is there a faster one and a slower one? Is that right?
On another note, they must have had 8 - 10 Matrixs there, but they were all automatic. Dealerships are retarded.

The MR2 Spyder only comes with the 140HP VVT-i engine and a 5-speed. It is faster than the GTS because it's much lighter and mid-engined and RWD. There's not much to the car.
Rumor is a 6-speed version with the same 140HP engine will be for 2003.

Is it really much faster? Why wouldnt they put the 180 vvtli and make it badass.

It's not faster in a straight line, except for the first 60'. Handling wise, of course it's not even close.

the mr2 has the same engine as the celica gt, but the car is alot lighter. The car was made for cornering and such. The GTS would beat the mr2 in a straight line.

Like he said mostly for insurance reasons and what Toyota intended to market the car as. The 1ZZ-FE is a better auto crossing engine anyway.

Possibly. However, according to the Japanese mags, it appears that many Spyder owners in Japan who road race like to do the 2zz swap into their rides.

It feels like more than 140HP. I drove one and in 5th gear at about 40 it had excellent throttle response.
Very tossable. ;)
