View Full Version : Hm, anyone else feel the same way about these "street encounters"?

Ya know when I first started getting into cars as a hobby... oh about six months ago... I craved these corny little street encounters where you would race from a red light or on the highway or something. I used to love reading this forum about how some GT-S beat a prelude SH or a v8 or whatever. But ever since my friend Sam got me into drag racing I find these stories to be very corny or insignificant. Once you go to a drag strip you realize how much bull $hit is really out there. What is fast, and what isn't. I could reply to 90% of the threads here by saying, "Nice one, but he was a crappy driver".

Personally, all I really want to hear are drag times, because in my book that's all that matters.

Not trying to discourage "kill posts". Just wanted to share how my opinions have evolved over the last 6 months. Wondered if anyone reads these posts with the same disdain as myself.

Drag times are a good way to gauge your actual performance, but there is a reason why some of us write "NT" on the glass and don't post our ET's in an open forum.

Well, around here there is like 1 track within an a 2 hour drive. Seriously nothing here at all(and it's not open that often). We really have nothing else to do but street race. Also, I think that -yes bad driver excuse is valid more times than not, but when and if you meet somebody and actually run them a few times I think alot of that goes out the window. Especially if you meet up with a few people that have similar cars,, multiple drivers with similar cars and you just do a few runs...

I have a gtech pro . to help with this.... durp

Man it sux here sometimes:D

I agree although some stories are just entertaining to read/hear. Jeeze, I can't even remember the last time I raced on the streets.
I'm also sick of the "I beat a civic, and I saw another civic beat a camaro, and I saw another camaro beat a corvett, so my car must be faster than a corvett" attitudes that some ignorant people have.
My interest in "racing" was almost completely gone until I went to the track. There I realized how hard it is, and it offered me a new challenge. Now, I'm almost hooked by it b/c I know what my car is capable of and I haven't reached that yet, and that drives me crazy. I have a new found respect for people who are able to drive their car skillfully on the track.

Especially knowing the fact that our cars are a terrible choice for drag racing. (FWD, 1.8L, no torque)

I have to admit, running the car at the drag strip can be fun, but its definitely not worth killing my clutch and putting all this work into a car just to get into the 13's. If I bought a car to drag, then I would have bought a car that started in the 13's and work my way down from there.

The only reason I go to the track is to get comparable times to other GT-S owners. When i hit 14.4-14.6 with my mods, then my drag days are over for this car. :) (not that I go to the strip often. Ive only gone once.)

Bah, why do people act like Celica is so great at auto crossing? Celica isn't very good at anything really haha... except turning heads. Isn't rwd & awd better than fwd in auto crossing too?

Whatever though. If I had a damn Echo I'd probably be racing that too.

"Bah, why do people act like Celica is so great at auto crossing"

auto x-ing is not about the car you drive. From my understanding... when people with Mini-coopers and old school VW bugs show up, they can clean house. But it has more to do with the driver.

It's nice to hear unusual, close, or out of the ordinary stories. I'm sure there are plenty of stories that go unposted. I raced a honda civic yesterday, I beat him, whoopie.

There are plenty of ricers who won't go to the tracks but aren't afraid to play on the street. When it comes to any dispute I'd definitely settle it on the track-things are a lot more even, safer, controlled, and BS free there :) and they have portapotties & hot dogs :D

i like the track. give you the opportunity to meet people with fast cars, learn tips crap like that. plus you need to be able to telll people how fast you are in the 1/4. lol. anyways, yeah i think it is a place that give a driver the opprtunity to strengthen his/her shifting driving skills, and trouble shoot and stuff. when i am there i am not worried about beating anyone elses car. i am thinkin about beating my own times. i want to get into low 15's and i know i have the skills to do it. i only been to the track twice, and i have ran 5 times in my life, so i think i am doing pretty damn good for the times i have accomplished thus far. i still like street racing though. i get a mad rush from it. i wouldnt trade that rush for anything man. not even sex. lol
