Check engine light came on this morning. 01 Celica GTS will not go into 4th gear. I switched to manual and the "M" blinks?
It goes thru the others (1-3) fine, but then RPMS continue to rise if you let it and won't change to 4th.
Any ideas before I take it to the shop??? THANKS!

Most likely tranny is ****ed if it will not switch gears. But I am taking a shot in the dark as I have no experience with fixing cars.

4th gear is usually an electric overdrive on Toyota automatics, might be something electrical, but best thing is to have the diagnostic code scanned. Did this happen shortly after starting your commute? Was the engine at normal operating temperature?

I work at toyota and i have seen a similar situation, except it wouldn't shift past 2nd..., start looking at replacing the tranny..

No, I basically got in and took off, so it was still cold.....hope it's not the tranny!
This car has been well maintained, and is rarely driven...probably 1500 miles in the last 3-4 months.

The tranny is programmed to hold 3rd gear if conditions are still cold, this is to aid engine warming when you start driving, it's been like that for Toyota's O/D transmission for a long time. However, if the car was fully warmed later on and it still wasn't shifting to 4th then you will have to have someone look into it further.

Hopefully.....not too bad.

Have you tried resetting the ECU? Maybe you could get lucky and it'll start working.

Still no car....tech rep says it's something electronic going to the ECU that isn't pulling the right numbers. He stated they got a code "they've never seen before"....I can't recall what it was exactly, but I do know it started with 70...Anyway, requested to keep it until Monday. They have it narrowed down it seems to the likely area in the schematics...we'll see Monday. I'll keep you posted.
Resetting the ECU didn't work, they did try.....thanks for everyone's suggestions. I appreciate it.

Finally got it back today...code P1730. Counter Speed Gear Sensor. Sensor was good, wires broken going to sensor. No charge for parts...labor killed!
A lot of work getting to it.

No idea...I made the suggestion when I talked to the dealer upon inspection when they were having issues with the code. They supposedly tried, but it didn't work.
Car is parked a lot (in a barn)....they think some mice may have got up there and chewed. Needless to say....I plan to get it out a little more than a couple of times a month.
Trying to save it for my 14 year old!

how do you reset the ECU?
You can either disconnect the negative battery cable for 10 minutes or unplug the EFI fuse.
