Concept art. It won't look like that. Maybe close, but I doubt it will be that "radical". It will probably be the current body with new moldings. But who knows, I heard they are dropping a 5.0 back in there.

You're right. I retract my previous statement. I should do more detective work sometimes .. it's just not easy, I'm busy "detectiving" the 03 Celica, 04 Lancer (now being said to be the Lancer EVO body and nameplate with an AirTrek engine... booo .. so a regular lancer with AWD and turbo), and the 03 SLP Monte Carlo SS (yes, SLP is going to have a package via Chevy for it).
In the "News" section of the new "Motor Trend", they have this interesting tidbit of info.
quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Details of the '05 Mustang are leaking out of Dearborn on an almost daily basis. The hardtop model of Ford's all new pony/musclecar, which will be based on a modified DEW (Lincoln LS/Ford T-Bird) platform, will be a fastback much like the '65-'66 Mustang 2+2, on which the fastback tapered off to a short rear deck. It will continue with base (V-6), GT, and Cobra models, with styling evocative of the '67-'68s. But this new Mustang will not get annual or regular facelifts-the '05s styling will last. There will be annual special models, like the '02 Bullitt and '03 Mach I. While both of those were based on the current GT, this time there will also be special editions off the new V-6, which is said to have a premium look, despite its basecar status. The new Mustang will hit showrooms in fall 2004, although an official unveiling may coincide with the 40th anniversary of the original Mustang's April 17, 1964 debut.

Honestly... Look at the T-bird.. . it's waaaayyy overpriced. It has NO room. and it's just an oval car with a grill on it.
I dunno what to think but hopefully ford because of the poor sales of the tbird will wake up and realize that we want inovation not simple redesigns...

dont get me wrong here, i like mustangs of the 60's and stuff. but if i wanted one i would buy one, and for a hell of a lot less then the price of a new one. maybe ford is trying to save some money on the design part since they just took a 60's car and put gfx and chopped the roof of it. im just disapointed.

For years, the automotive companies have taken strives forward in the design of their vehicles, and I like the way things are now, and how some of the cars in the upcoming future are looking. But this seems like a step backwards.

I can't, sorry. All I know and have is what I've been told by a couple people at Ford who have seen the car's model. They've basically all said, that while that picture is a lot closer than the crap motortrend had out in that one issue, its still not too close.
They're really gaurding this car's styling, etc before its release because of how big a deal the 05 is going to be for Ford and the mustang.

I think that some (most) of you guys are too young to have enjoyed the styling of the 60s and 70s. Not that you might not enjoy them now but it's different if you grew up with them. To me, being 30, I think that the whole retro styling is sweet. I've also seen a concept of a Camaro of what it might look like if and when they bring it back. It looked just like a 69 but futuristic. So I like it. If they brought back the styling of a 57 chevy but today's styling added, I'd be all over it. :) Just my .02

What's up w/ GM and all this retro craps? Do they really think younger buyers would buy them? Just like the new T-bird, the ppl who bought them are mostly in their 40s-50s (no offense, just stating my observation). In my personal opinion, GM is bringing the old styling (the current retro craze) so that the older folks, who couldn't afford them when they were younger, can have a chance to own one now. But let's do a reality check here..... How many of the older folks are actually going to buy them? On the other hand, younger buyers (like most of u here on the board) would most likely be attracted to buying the more stylish and better performance imports.
In any case, I think GM is shooting themselves in the foot. BTW, read this from the June issue of EVO (a respectable UK car mag): "To be honest, American cars are garbage. They are good at quarter miles but they can't corner!"

Are you crazy?
please for the love of God, stop talking out of your ass.
Or, if you want to call me a biased domestic owner, go venture and research yourself on over at all teh mustang boards, then compare their amount of engine problems, etc. with those found on this site alone, let alone other ones. my point is that there is not any distinction between the two, cuz anyone who mods their cars, drives the piss out of them, and doesnt maintain it well are going to cause it to fail on them. like i said before, over 200 drag passes on my car, over 4 full seasons of autocross on my car, over 43,000 miles of me maintaining the car, but also beating it up on the weekends, and it has not failed me ONCE. A friend of mine even downshifted his v6 from 3rd to first(i have no idea why/how) and it still ran like achamp.
BUT-- its "crappy" engines...
god damn i hate ignorant ricer talk.

Apparently you must know everything about Ford's then because of your wife and a couple friends.
Now you can meet me
My name's Dave. I've been racing my Ford Mustang for the past 2 years. 44,000 miles on it. I have raced in the Clemson Sports Car Club for the entire time, going through 4 semesters of autocrossing, and many many trips to the Atlanta Dragway. I would say well over 100 times, closer to 200 times, maybe even over that I have drag raced my Ford. Now, looking back through my recipets, I can not find any for repairs. Lets see, oil change and filter, oil change and filter, oil change and filter, tires, oil change and filter, etc etc. Now..while your wife's car fell apart(it is a Mystique afterall) or your friends Mustangs fell apart(this i find almost laughable with its convenience to this discussion, and coming from a Type R owner), I have yet to come across any of my friends, whether we're counting ones with Cobra's, GT's, or V6's..have one major problem with the car that was not a result of their abuse of the vehicle. No one's motor, transmission, rear end, door panel, hood, etc. just magically broke or fell off because it was made in a Ford factory. No one's gas tank exploded and set the thing on fire, and no ones electrical system short circuited form static electricity, or any other rediculous quality issue I can possibly think of. We have a 5.0 LX down here..162k miles on teh original block. No internal work, or anything done to it. It still dynoes at teh same levels it should have over 10 years ago in 1988 when it was first made. It still gets over 20 miles to teh gallon, with the kid racing the piss out of it. and we have yet to deal with any quality issues, other than the fact that the car is 14 years old now. 14 years old and itll smoke your Type R on the untouched stock block at 162k. You want to talk reliability? It doesn't even burn oil.
Let's see, make your examples of friends upon friends upon friends all you want, cuz I will have 5 for each one that haven't had jack **** happen to their car unless they were being a dumbass with it.
Now am I in any way implying that some cars Ford makes arent problematic, or have their fair share of recalls? Hell no. Look at the Focus, or Explorer. What I am saying however is take a look at the Mustang, and how many recalls it has had. It has had ONE recall since 1994, for a loose ebrake, that when people would park their 5 speed on a steep hill and put the car into neutral, it would roll back. Now, who do you know that doesnt put the car into first gear on a steep hill to park? And if they don't, they're an idiot.
blah blah blah, I don't really care to change your mind on this issue. I just do care when people mouth off incomplete facts, or half truths about **** they just dont know.
bottom line: stick to your Type R, and I'll stick to my Mustang and we'll be happy. I won't tell you how to coaz another 3bhp out of that motor, much like you wouldnt try to tell me how to make more power or whatnot out of mine.

Let's stop for a minute and just use some common sense. If Ford products were all crap, not reliable, broke constantly, and had CRAPPY engines...does anyone honestly, with half a brain think that they would have been around THIS long? WE're talking about a company thats over a hundred years old. If these cars were really this problematic, I mean we certainly hear all these stories of my friends neighbor..or my wifes cousin, or my $14k wifes car.. can we all just step back a minute and honestly think..There is no way in hell that all these cars are this bad. There is no way in hell that this stereotype could even be rooted in semi-truth, because if 50% of Ford's vehicles were lemons, or troublesome, NO ONE WOULD BUY THEM!
so all I ask, or plead, is for everyone here to be an individual and use whatever is between your God given ears. Stop being a lemming, and stop believing hearsay and outright lies without even stopping ot think first. Congrats, yakko, your wife got a bad car. Guess what? **** happens. It's happened to people on this very board(arbitration anyone?) its happened to people on DSM boards, it's happened to people on hell, Supra boards. What does it prove?
Just think about that. Then think about how..if this was all true..Ford could be the 2n dlargest automaker in the world.
Think.

That's like saying Celica's, yes the "all mighty import celica" is a piece of crap. I personally know 4 people that have misshifted and blown the engine. Driver error or poor shift gate design, doesn't matter. This is a stupid arguement. Do I think celicas are a piece of crap? No, is there a better design out there? Yes.
Fix Or Repair Daily, that again is a stupid point. If I could remember the one for the Toyota, I'd stick it in here.
To the Moron that thinks GM makes the mustang, well, I don't know. Go buy a Ford Viper or Dodge Corvette, or something.......
Yes, we all know the mustang can't turn as well as the celica OUT OF THE BOX, but since they already have a decent amount of power, they can spend thier money a suspension setup for their first mods. The car can be made to handle.
Anyway, I really like the design. I agree with CoolWheels00, most aren't old enough to appreciate the "retro" designs. As long as they don't over price is like they did the T-Bird, they should be good to go. Anyway, I tried to help SlasherX, I mean the sterotypes seem to get worse with every noob that comes on...

Torque :)
the 3.0 doesnt reach its torque peak til like 4k rpms i believe...the current 3.8 reaches it by 2750, and the 4.0 is right aroudn there as well, with 240 ft lbs.
the 3.0 is agreat engine, just not for a mustang..it woul dhave to be geared like a sombitch to "feel" like the normal mustang motors of old.

Gracias.
Mustang's can handle out of the box, but they take a level of driver skill that most teenagers simply do not posess.
Remember the SCC article Type R vs. GT? Bout as equal a comparo as you can get these days.
But as my Honda friend tells me. It's easy to make hp out of a mustang, but you need to mod the suspension. with a honda its easy to make it handle, but hard to make hp out of. we then dropped a B16A into his 86 prelude..hehe :)

First of all, all engines burn oil moron. It's part of the way they work. It's normal. Don't tell me it doesn't burn oil. Secondly, when did I talk about the internal failures or the car completely breaking down? I didn't. Those haven't been the problems. Instead, it's been thing like ignition coil failures, alternator failures, starter quitting, factory spark plugs and wires dying before they should, AC compressors needing replacement after 5 years, EGR valve keeps need replacement. Numerous parts have been recalled and at least one has been replaced on my wife's Mystique everytime it's been brought into the dealer except for one. My friend with a Mustang has his axle snap while driving down the freeway. My dad had the same problem with a Bronco II he borrowed for the day since he was looking at buying it.
Why did you get so defensive over my simple statement on my experience? You launch into this long monologue over nothing. I've been very pleased with the performance of my wife's Mystique. The power delivery is smooth and stong. It doesn't burn much oil. It's got 95k miles on it. My complaint is all of the things that go wrong with the engine that I've got to constantly fix or dump money into. Granted, the parts of the Ford are a little cheaper than the parts for my imports. But the frequency of nuisance problems that cost money and time to fix is very annoying. Ford's perform well, but the overall build quality and finish sucks from what I've seen.

I agree with you there. I thought the 98 model (especially the Cobra) looked really nice. The 99-02 models were a step backwards in the design department. They took something with nice smooth lines and turned into something that came out of Picasso's cubist era.

I like the 2005 mustang. Would consider trading the celica for it :)
Looks nice and with power at my disposal.

I think the harder lines of the current gen looked better than the previous "spaceship" looking gen.

I read a letter to Automotive Week from a Porsche Boxster S owner. The guy loved every aspect of the performance of the car. After 6 months, however, the dealer had the car for repairs for 4 of those months. That means there's something seriously wrong with your car. That's been the case for many of my Ford owning friends. Even my friend that has a 2001 V6 Mustang has had their car in the shop 4 times already for repairs that took a week or more to correct. What good is performance if your stuck with a POS loaner or rental?

But then you get to race the loaners! And they're free. That keeps the miles off the truck. ;)
Actually I've been pretty good recently, only use the truck 1 day a week to go to work. But I also use it all weekend, so it seems like I'm always driving it, but the mileage is staying way down. (100 mile round trip commute to work  )
