View Full Version : Speed Density (MAP) vs MAF

I had an interesting conversation with a gentleman from AEM today at a buddy's 4th of July Party. I'm probably going with their standalone for my alltrac so I was talking a little shop with him and when I mentioned that I was thinking of going MAF on my intake to replace the VANE type thats stock he argued fairly strongly that a speed Density system (MAP) would be better. I was a bit skeptical, I mean, almost all manufacturers have gone from MAP to MAF and they are inherently more accurate than the speed density systems. So we talked for a while and he brought up some good points, most noticably that the speed density system gives a more instant response to the ECM and is easier to tune for high performance apps. That made sense since, seeing as how the MAF can only measure whats going on NOW and it takes a bit of time for the atmospheric pressure to overcome the filter and length of intake tubing. Speed density also relies less on throttle input. Anyways I believe that hes right but I will probably screw with both just to see for myself. But I was still surprised. I'd just never really thought of it before, I just always have used MAF because I assumed it was a better technology. Live and learn.

Thanks for sharing that with us.

The old Honda b engines use MAP.. correct??

Dunno. I've never cared about Hondas. A lot of older Non-performance Toyotas do though. The high performance onces have always used MAF, Vane type, or Karman Vortex technology which is why I found his statement weird. But the logic that it responds faster to changes in manifold conditions and hence allows the ECM to better control fuel strategy does ring true to some extent. I may play with it when I get the ECM for my alltrac and see the differenced between the two.

I don't like NY... everythings old and dirty and stinks... that and theres more fun stuff out here in the land of fruits & nuts - like car companies and tuners and race teams and what used to be a healthy street racing scene. Still plenty of gutless dressed up Hondas and ghettoed out Mustangs to spank though :)
