View Full Version : Purpose of clear plastic in door panel?

What is the purpose of the plastic that is behind the door panel? The stuff covering the holes and electrical wires?

Would it hurt any to take it out? I've found that it's the source of alot of my rattling noises from the stereo. I tightened my door bolts and that helped except for on the driver side, which still rattles, but both doors have rattling from the air being moved around inside the plastic by the speakers.:bang:

thanks

The plastic sheathing? Moisture barrier.

its a vapour barrier, its there so moisture doesnt get into the electrical stuff.

if you take it out your car will smell damp every time it rains hard.

No it won't?

yes it will. water runs down inside the door on the other side of the glass (which is sealed from the car by the plastic) and then drains out the bottom. taking out the barrier will let the damp air inside the door inside the car, my previous car was missing those plastics and smelled damp after every hard rain, especially in the summer.

The only reason to remove it is to dampen your car doors, and if you do that, it would be sealed anyway.

just deaden your doors. take out the plastic and put sound deadening in there..

don't remove the plastic totally, but you can affix it more firmly so it doesnt rattle around or use a different material for the vapor barrier, but keep some kind of vapor barrier in there.

But wouldn't something like dynamat become the vapor barrier?

no, that gets stuck to the outside skin of the door panel or the backside of the inside door panel.

thats what sound deadening looks like. theres no vapor barrier there btw, that would go right over the door right behind the door panel.

What would I use as a noise free vapor barrier then?

they make foam cups which isolate the speaker from the door, but for the life of me i can't remember what the proper name is or who makes them.

just resecure the the plastic liner in there, how do you know 100% thats whats causing the buzzing/rattle? you'd need to be moving alot of air to overcome all the other air leaks in the outer door skin, like the drains at the bottom (make sure they're not clogged), around the door handle, around the mirror, around the window itself. the air should be escaping there before its trying to push through the plastic. if it is, then just get some coat hanger and make stiff rods, glue them to the plastic once its installed to make a 'rib cage' for the vapor barrier so you can put another layer of sound deadener over top.

because while the door panel was off I turned on the stereo and turned it up a little bit, and the cover was moving and making a buzzing noise, kind of like when you stick paper over the vent for a sub.

hmm fair enough, but thats pretty...uncommon. check those other places on the door...but remember that yes, its going to be able to buzz and rattle with the panel off, the panel sort of holds it in place. i bet just putting some pads of some kind on the back side of the door panel to press against the vapor barrier would fix your problem.

just out of curiousity did you throw away the large yellow foam piece that's attached to the back of your door panels (the one on the top not the one near the bottom)? It falls off the first time most people remove the door panels because its glued on weakly.

I had the same problem as you and when I just recently switched interiors I was re-introduced to these pads. Adding one on my passenger's side door got rid of the rattle I was dealing with b/c of my components.

mine wasn't ever actually needed until the motor mount inserts went in. Then the door panel rattles started appearing. But i'm just glad this fixed it, now if I can just get that foam piece for my driver's side door too.

i'm totally missing both these vapor barriers though from my tinkering over the years. Maybe i'll get creative and make a new one :gap:, unless there's a known pt# for it.

93 geo prizm ftw! those 4" speakers sounded fantastic in the doors once deadened like that. le sigh, its all taken apart now though. no speakers or radio and i'm back to driving it till my lift bolt is fixed.
