Hey guys, I was just wondering how hard it is to install an aftermarket steering wheel on an 02' Toyota Celica GT. I'm thinking about getting a Sparco, or a Momo steering wheel with a quick release hub. If any of you know how much it will take to install it, or know of a write up somewhere that'd be great if you'd point me in the right direction, thanks.

Lots of nice steering wheels out there, but don't forget you will lose your airbag...not a worthwhile trade IMO.

True, that's one car accident that no one wants to have. lol I'm just wondering what it will take, because I'm thinking about doing it, not for sure yet. Especially since it's not a show car, and it's probably illegal in my state to have a car without an airbag on the drivers side. lol

Never thought of that....may not pass inspections either, if you still need to get your car inspected.

The stock wheel of our cars are great, I dont see how anyone would want to change thier steering wheel or seats when most aftermarket ones are modeled in the same way and you have an OEM part.
But if you really want to change it, check your local laws first I know in mass you dont need the airbag light off to pass but different states differ.
BTW love the car broderp

I've said this before, I will never understand why people willingly defeat one of the most important safety features of a car just to "look good".

Airbags are not allowed on a lot of tracks

These are also the same tracks that require roll cages and 5 point harnesses to race.

Buttonwillow... You can actually run either w/ or without; it depends on your setup and under what homologation/class rules youre running under.

exactly. There are no tracks on the planet that outright ban airbags.

I didnt use the word "ban". Play on words. I said 'on tracks'. You cant run em on tracks when the rules state you cant participate in the race. :fawk:

Get a TRD steering wheel if you want to keep the airbag.

The biggest reason why a lot of people choose to remove their airbags is because the rules they race in wont allow it... The combination of airbags, full helmet, fixed seats, fixed harnesses and roll cages are more deadly than otherwise.... SRS airbags are a supplemental restraint system and are only useful in the prevention of harm/death when used correctly. With mobile seats and seatbelts.

I love my celica steering wheel.:shrugs: One reason I chose a celica over many other cars was because the steering wheel was smaller and not huge like an integra or something.

doesnt the seat belt pull back a few inches upon impact anyways? or was that an added option on my car? :shrugs:

The OP did not clarify if this was for track purpose or street purpose. So I am assuming its for street purpose.

They are called explosive seat belt tensioners, they simply yank all the slack out of the seatbelt upon a collision... (not the same as when your seatbelt wont slack up after hitting the brakes, That is a simple weighted pendulum that locks the belt in place) but it is in NO way an airbag replacement. Im too lazy to look into if the celica has them... but it is my understanding that they are a pretty common feature in about any car.

No need to. The question was raised as to "Why anyone would do it". If hes keeping it streets, he should know the real reason why "most" people remove their SRS systems to make a full, well thought out decision vs "oohhhh, that wheel looks awesome!"; i.e. impulse buying.

Just keep the stock.
You really don't gain anything from an aftermarket one, well besides no air bags.
