haven't been pulled over yet, but I've had a LOT of close calls. Been pulled over for other things, but they've never busted me for the HIDs. They just seem to pull me over to take a closer look at the car, and then let me go. I've been hella lucky.
what are the laws about hid's..?

Any HID in a non-oem-hid car (housing) is illegal. Not DOT approved, for off road use only. But if you put in say 2003 DOT approved OEM HID Celica housings into your celica, its all good.

if the officer pulls you over to ask about your HID's, just tell him it came w/ the car from the dealer as an option. Make up some story that you paid $1500 for this "dealer option". If he asks you if the dealer notified you that you may be stopped for these lights by an officer, tell him NO. he'll let you off cause the beyotch aint got nothin on ya. if he does'nt, just wake up early for court and tell the judge the same sad story.... your honor will throw it out with no hesitation.... don't u love our judicial system???????

no problems here. Cops are smart enough to know which ones are OEM and which aren't. All of em are fricking bright.

should be safe with our cars.. since we have projectors and they point downwards anyway. mine are 7000k purple/white and they look awesome. i use OSRAM ballasts. what is the difference between the 2003 headlights anyway other than its DOT approved? are the 2003 celicas coming with an HID option now?

strangely enough, i got pulled over once for the ion crystal bulbs in my TRD foglights. The state trooper was trying to tell me that they were projecting a large yellow glow on the ground that was similar to neons. I told him that the front end and the foglights were Toyota parts and that I personally checked the alignment of the lights to make sure they weren't shining up and blinding people. During our conversation, I pointed out half a dozen cars that drove by with the same type of foglight bulbs. The more knowledgeable you are about the stuff, the cooler the police seem to be with you. He let me go with a warning that "you will probably get pulled over again for those".

HID lights are legal. all these people are talking about HID look bulbs. i noticed it when someone said that it would take 5 min to install. real HID kits take way way way longer than that. with real HID's you have to find a place to install the ballists and find a way to fit the HID bulbs into the housing. nokya and all them other $20-$75 bulbs are just HID look. Phillips and TRD are the big wigs for HID kits for toyota. there are other companies that make true HID kits as well. but the ones you see in the s2000, bmw, lexus, etc are Phillips. know your facts...

HID Lights are legal, only if the car was designed to be used with them. Housings designed for use with halogen low beams (such as 00-02 celicas) are only legal for use with halogen bulbs. Since halogen and gas discharge technologies are so different, they require differnet types of housings. Gas discharge/Xenon/HID lights produce way more light than halogens, and the bulbs that they come in have different focal points than the halogen bulbs. Thus the housing must be designed to control the massive light output as well as the focal point of the bulb to create an even, non-glaring light.
BUT, there are companies that create HID kits that fit in halogen housings, and some even make sure they fit without modification AND have the HID focal point at the same position as the bulb it would replace. Regardless, they are still not DOT approved for use on public roads.
This is my opinion: if you can get more light in front of you without blinding oncoming traffic or the person in front of you, then go for it. Why risk your nighttime safety becuase of laws? If you get a good cutoff, and smooth beam pattern, then in my book they are legal

Pokai,
There is a little metal piece inside the light housing that is there to keep the light beam from glaring in the eyes of oncoming drivers so unless you install them wrong you shouldn't have a problem, should you? I mean mine are perfectly fine except for the color of them LOL Light beam pattern is puuuuuuurfect :)

you would be retarded if you installed bulbs wrong in the first place. you would be able to see the beam pattern and should know if it is too high or not. our projectors shoot pretty much at knee high and don't go above that. if you really don't want cops messing with you, stick to plain halogens, or at least pure white hid bulbs (4300k).

The projector is made for a certain length bulb using the stock base piece that attaches to H7 bulbs. When you put a longer or shorter bulb in the housing (the HID bulbs are longer than stock), this messes with the projectors.
So actually.....it COULD be illegal in our housing. It will be interesting to see what modifications will be made to the 03 housing in order to have the HIDs.

I think they will use the same projector unit from M sport HID.

That is EXACTLY what I told the officer who pulled me over on Tuesday night. He asked about them and I told him it came off a Lexus IS300. I made sure to say High Intensity Discharge and most of BMW's, Benz, and Lexus have these lights as a factory option. He didn't write me a ticket after saying that even though he told me they were illegal before I explained. It WORKS.
