ashtray mod?

i want to have 2 or 3 toggle switchs inside where the ashtray used to be and still be able to use the use the flip cover over the tray. well i made the a cardboard insert that fits the the amount of switchs i want ni thier and it closes. but come on it is cardboard and it doesn't stick very well either. so i was thinking of ways on making this look professial with out getting a professional. but is what i came up with get bondo and mold a shape over the cardboard so it is the correct size but not sure if that would work and not sure how i would keep the finish product from moving.

any ideas and help please tell me :) thanks.

if u were wondering what i wanted the switch for these are some
1. footwell neon(getting)
2. DRL light (on/off)
3. what ever my heart desires.

Not a bad idea man, how do you feel about cutting the actual asytray down? Would that maybe work? Just cut it to the right height/depth/whatever then fiberglass the end so you have a mounting plate for the switchs, a little putty and sanding to finish it with some paint and you should be good to go. And I can't imagine it being too much money to replace an asytray.

oh man dude u somewhat stole my idea, god, its ok though. lol. I was gonna do that but i didnt know where to put it either replace the ashtray or like tear my dash up and re-mod it like that, but u got a good idea, i like it. Can i use that one in stead of tering my dash up, lol.

Why not buy a small piece of Black Plexiglass and cut it close to shape. Then take a grinder or rotary sander and shave it to fit where you want it. would look pretty good. If you want backing you could make the whole thing, Just heat a larger sheet and bend to shape. A propane torch would work.

yeah only thing that i dont want is that cig liter, i want to take that off and make that whole part right there a mod switch for stuff. Is that possible and if what do i have to do to remove that?

where would i buy plexiglass from does homedepot or lowes sell it? i would thing they do and what is the best to cut holes and the trim to. hexsaw for trim with sander and drill or holes? hmm this is going to be fun. i too mad i don't have money for anything else to buy lol. i am one poor bitch every month after i pay my car payment. oh well i enjoy it 24-7

ok yeah, but i dont want to have to open and close it i am going to have just that part costum do i dont have to open and close it. i will be able to pit at lest a good 7 switch in that part of the dash.

i want mine to open and close becasue the toggle switchs that are going thier is not ever day on/off switchs you know. hmm i think i am going to buy some fiberglass tommorow and see what i can come up with.

i'd like to make mine open and close ... i need switches for strobes and streetglow lights and all that stuff, but, the laws in my town say you can't have anything that flashes ... so i have to hide my switches out of plain sight ... and i'm nto a smoker so it won't get in the way ... any ideas of other places i could put it?

No one works in a bubble where everything they do is totally origonal... youre supposed to take things other people have done and use them, change them, and make them your own. If you really want to do something and you dont do it just becuase its been done before, then you're modding your car for the wrong reasons, IMHO.

I WAS FIRST DAMMIT. if you search the forum for like a year back, you'll find it. mine is the two red switches for the neons. i was also the first to make the neons come on when the doors open. dammit.

i used a piece of black vinyl floor tile from home depot. i'd really recommend putting something behind it to stiffen it up like aluminum or something. looks real nice. 2 switches, and you can drill a little hole in that back that wouldn't even be noticable. i will be switching out this setup for a piece of plexi later and a blue led behind it that lights up the plexi.

really show does give a **** u use it for neon .. wooow .. lol .. i would be embarsed to say that i was the 1st to use it for neon, make them at lest do something that its worth putting them in for .. sh!t, neon .. lol. Sorry its just funny, thats so old crap to make ur car look fast and all ..

dude whatever i was just kidding around since everyone was talking "who was first." i don't really care since lots of people have done this. its not like its original, there's only a few places to do this in the car. its nice and convenient though. it looks clean an my neons are just under the dash and are basically only there to act as a dome light. its nice and its not to ricey or whatever the hell you were saying muledoe.

another idea...

you could simply drill well-placed holes in the
console next to the shifter. then, screw in a
metal toggle switch (cheap from radio shack).
it's clean, it's accessible, and you still have the
ashtray for spare change... :-)

what did i do this for you ask?

custom heater/massagers for the driver and
passenger seats... :-)

it makes traffic much more bearable.

for the change, buy a box of Altoids... use the metal canister for you change and gas CC reciepts... throw it into your glove box when you're not using it.

for the traffic, install a DVD/LCD screen... pop in a music video disc :)
