i google this it sounds right

It is a measurement of how quickly a certain amount of oil flows thru a small opening at a particular temp. The first number is a measurement at a cold temp and the second (30,40,50) is a measurement when it is much warmer. So, 40 is a bit thicker than 30 when it is warmer.

Mix single 10W-40 quart/litre with four (4) 5W-30 ones in the summer and you should be OK.

All you need is 5w-30. You don't need any weight more than that.. that was in the old days.

just u shouldnt keep mixing oils like you do. Its not recommended 5W-30 Winter & 10W-30 summer is fine.

if ever i don't mix it up? will it be ok to drive? On a higher mileage car in the summer, you'd be OK. If I remember correctly, 5W-40 was the spec for the Lotus Elise.

i never swap it up. idk why.Maybe because you drive in So. Dakota.;)

You don't need any weight more than that.. that was in the old days. If you read the Owners Manual, 10W-30 valid for 0F+.

Its not necessary to switch, 5W will give you quicker starting in winter (or when the engine is cold) and quicker protection (it pumps easier at low temps) and works fine in summer for the few moments that the engine is cold.

Once the engine is warmed up (regardless of it being winter or summer) the 30 or 40 rating is dominant, so the 30 weight will protect just fine (with modern oils, this was not true in the seventies which is why on my old Lotuses the factory spec was 20W50) but the 40 weight will cost you a tiny bit of horsepower and fuel economy, for a very small promise of slightly better resistance to being squeezed out between engine parts.

Lotus has a thicker oil speced because they assume abusive driving behavior and have had a long history of engine wear complaints (according to a former Lotus employee I knew very well) with previous non Toyota engines.

i have read through all of the posts on this and on the only one that comes close to the truth is Celi Blanco and Noisufno. the first number is for when the temp is 32- for the cold states and the next number is for +32. you dont wanna change the weight of the oil because you change your oil pressure. the heavy weight of the oil will cause premature wear on the oil pump. and the oil pump is not greatest thing to try to replace. the oil pressure comes from your bearing clearances. the clearances for the mains are 0.0011-0.0024 in for the 1zz. 2zz 0.0011-0.0020 in. now think about this that is a very tight fit that your trying to force thicker oil through that is used on older like the 80s vehicles. dont think you would wanna do that

That is fine, your cooling system keeps the engine below the temperature where oil breaks down. If you are really concerned then switch to a synthetic oil.

calling me an inbreed hick? saying i'm hung like a buck gerbil?Nothing of the kind. Merely a reference to the lack of high temps in your region.

could i use a different weight You could. Especially, if you do alot of highway in the summer.

Different from you guys. I live in turkey and here dealers recomend 0-30 for celica but I dont know why but they say better cooling

Just switched to castrol Edge 5w-30 and added half bottle of Liqui Moly Mos2 (I like my Moly) althought Edge already has some moly in it. 2way are you doing well with Edge? Seen its a fairly new oil in the US still havent seen any UOA's out there. I guess whenever its OCI i will do a UOA with blackstone and post.

2way are you doing well with Edge? Seems OK. I haven't done any UOAs. I am getting pretty consistent VVT startup noise, though. Not sure if it is related to the Edge or not. Otherwise, valvetrain is quieter vs. Syntec. My MPG has gone down..... but, my commute has changed and I hit more traffic/stop&go.

I have to check if the Edge has hit the stands here already. My guess is not. I'm still using GTX 10W40 in the Celica and 20W50 in the Crown.

Maybe VVT-i Gear?

Gsboek had the same problem didn't he? I think he changed it and noise was gone. I know he posted a few pics describing the problem. Maybe he can chime in.

So the VVT-i gear problem involves only annoying startup noises? Or it degrades to some mechanical damage or problems?
