I found this Toyota Celica in true Bosozoku style. This car caught my attention a while ago, but I knew it would be a great addition to this month's theme. This Celica was build in 1975 for the Australian market but after Alfonzo, the owner, picked it up back in 2006 he transformed the car into this midnight crawler. It wouldn't be out of place during one of the many midnight meetings at Daikoku Futo.

He bought the car as a bare shell for a mere 100 Australian dollars because he was looking for a shell for a 2jzgte engine conversion. After some research he decided to stick with the 2T-G engine. He began to rebuild the engine with parts sourced from Japan.

In the opening picture you can see two oil coolers, at first I thought "why" too but Alfonzo explained to me that the one on the outside isn't allowed in Australia. So for daily driving he has the one behind the grill and for shows he installs the other one for that true Bosozoku style.

The plan was to restore the car to its former glory, so Alfonzo send the shell together with new body panels to get them sandblasted. After they returned it was time to choose a color, at first he was thinking yellow but soon changed his mind and went with black. As time went by it became more than just a restoration. The car slowly started to look more like a Bosozoku style car from the 1970's.

The engine has been fully restored and modified with a plethora of parts. I will share the complete spec list with you guys.

The owner of that car needs to be punched in the throat for destroying a beautiful car.

Bosozoku, I think that says it all, in a way it's the Japanese F&F. :chuckles:

^WHAT? DESTROYING? Thats a very nice celica. Now the looks and everything, thats subjective, but you have no idea how many of these beautiful cars are just left to rot or worse. This car didn't start out like this, it was made, and I know it took a LOT of time and money to get it to look like it does. BTW the "worse" I was refering to is the F22, sr20 swaps that are done to these cars. I wish I could punch them in the throat while burning at the stake.

Dear god I hope you are joking.

Lets take a look and see how they ruined this car

1: Oil cooler hanging OUTSIDE the front bumper
2: Oil cooler lines flailing aimlessly in front of the bumper
3: Horrendous Wheels
4: Stupid & pointlessly stretched tires on said wheels.

Now, put some nice wheels on there, like CCW Classics with a properly fitting tire, get rid of the stupid fvcking oil cooler, and add some dark tint, it will be stunning.

I do agree with you that their are some, not so attractive qualities about the car. Oh and those are old school wheels, they are SSR's and they, along with the oil coolers and fender flares, are meant to go along with the style the car owner is going with.

Its hard not to have this attitude towards a lot of the cars on THIS forum. Its not like you can go to auto zone and buy parts for a 1975 celica. The time and knowledge needed to put this car together, deserves respect. Thats all im saying.

The time and knowledge needed to put this car together, deserves respect. No it really doesn't. And you are 100% correct that there are tons of terribley done Celica's on this forum...do you still respect those cars? I certainly do not.

Actually you can get a few parts from Autozone for a 75' Celica. Nothing restoration wise, but I am just being pedantic here. I recognize the time & money spent to restore this thing but the final step he took with it destroyed the overall image for me. I have such an underlying hate for stretched tires and the overall Bosozoku look.

I guess we can agree to disagree.

I hate the stretch/camber look but I like rough ratty cars like this, and I love the whole bosozoku culture.

He explains why 1 and 2 were done in the article.

Wheels are subjective, personally I find 18 in. wheels on any celica but a wide body to be hideous (no seriously wheels look stupid more than they look good, that's why I don't spend money on them).

Ok, the stretched tires I think are more personal taste.

I like the looks, very creative and clean (yes, minus the oil lines).

the exposed lines and cooler are essential to any bosozoku styled vehicle though.

Bosozoku also have a distinct style of car modification, eponymously called "bosozoku style". These cars are often modified with large exhaust pipes, bright paint, and large aero kits. Also popular are oil coolers or less commonly large turbo or supercharger intercoolers with highly polished tubing, usually mounted in a prominent position in the front bumper..

All I'm saying is that a car that has an almost 35+ year old fully built motor that will outrun more than half the cars on here deserves some respect. Pouring money into a project is not even relative to what it took to get this car to where it is.

Yankee/Yanki is an extension of Bosozoku.
Bosozoku is not limited to bikes, it's actually crossed over into car tuning.

bosozoku just refers to gangs - whatever those gangs are doing is bosozoku culture and style.
