View Full Version : Speakers for 8 Speaker System?

I was planning on replacing the tweeter and the mid-range speaker when I found out after removing the door panel that I have an 8 speaker system (I only had the car for two months and assumed I had a 6 speaker system). I saw the sticky about possibly ditching the 3 speaker setup and going with a 2 speaker setup with a wider range. I currently have Infinity 6.5" Reference 6030CS speakers awaiting to be installed later if they will work but I was waiting to get an opinion from some people. I'm still using the stock head unit with plans in the future (maybe in 2-3 years) to upgrade the head unit. I'm wanting to replace the front speakers because they are buzzing on the low end. Thanks in advance.
All GT-S have an 8spkr system. There's just a difference on the '03+ as to the amp/speakers used.
The problem you face is the early model years have a crossover built into the amp. So, if you go to a front 2-way system, you will have to decide upon losing mid or losing bass. If it were me, I'd hook the 6.5" up to the sub output & leave the tweeter on the mid/high output. I'd also consider changing the rears to coaxial 2-ways (look for someone parting out an '03+ to do it on the cheap).
The other option is to swap to an '03+ amp (assuming you are staying w/the OEM HU).

Thanks for that info. With the crossover being built into the amp, does the mean that I don't need to use the crossover that comes with the kit? From what you're describing what you would do, that would cut the mid-range, correct? Also, if I switch to coax for the rear, could I incorporate 3-way speakers instead of a 2-way? Sorry if these questions are elementary, but I've just been used to replacing factory coax speakers with higher rated ones, so this is a bit new for me. Thanks.

Thanks 2way, I'll go that route in the future and will switch the rear speakers, since they still work, for now...
