There is an actuator on the intake camshaft (oil driven & controlled by an Oil Control Valve) that can advance and retard the intake camshaft over a preset range of like 40 degrees or so. Its position shanges with relative to the rest of the engine (crankshaft & exhaust cam) which are in fixed timing via the drive chain. The computer individually monitors intake camshaft position and makes continuous changes to optimize power, performance, smoothness of idle, and fuel economy dependant on engine RPM and engine load.
