Lets start a list on the features your celica offers that are often overlooked.
I'll go first..
Did you know your Celica has zippers in the seats, allowing you to store objects inside the seat?

Yep, but I had forgotten about it since I haven't rode in the back seat since I first test drove it 6 years ago.
Did you know that the ash tray lid is the absolute perfect size to hold a LG Voyager in place while using the navigation? (However it does not work with my new Droid :( )

I remember that when I first got the car the auto on/off headlights was novel to me. Also, that the interior lights don't come on if the e-brake is pulled when you start the car.
I thought it was neat that the little panel that exposes the moonroof will automatically open slightly if you push the button to open it partway.

I thought the little tab on the passenger side to insert the seatbelt so it won't rattle around was neat. Of course owning another car that 25 years ago had an awful lot of these thoughtful details does change my perspective a bit.

Why would you test drive the car from the back seat? Weirdo.
Some of the things I have learned over the years:
-The door panels are different on the 2003 Celica, there are more pieces you can take apart without breaking it.
-Not all Celicas come with a rear windshield wiper.
-Gauge clusters are the same on M/T and A/T GT Celicas, but different on the M/T versus A/T GT-S.
-The stock GT stereo comes with an internal amp versus the GT-S which comes with the external amp. Makes installing an aftermarket stereo on the GT-S more of a PITA. (and yes, some GT Celicas do come with the GT-S Sound system)
-Even though everything looks pretty much exactly the same on the 2000 and 2003 GT Celica, the engine harness is different and not interchangeable without heavy modification.
-A GT-S muffler will bolt up to a GT.
-GT-S Celicas come with a weak transmission, absolute garbage.
-The 2003 Celicas have slightly better interior sound insulation.

I just recently realized that my instrument cluster has PNRD32L or something like that. I was likt wtf? (trany or cluster swap done on this car?) Than I've read that all GT's have this.
I also didn't knew that Celicas come without lower grill from factory.
I still don't know if I have premium sound system, it sounds pretty good but nothing compare to my Subaru with premium sound.
Also there are a lot more stock headunits than I though when I've looked at Japanese and European models.

If you lock the doors using the center switch with a door open, they lock, but you can't unlock (using the center switch) them until you put the key in the ignition.
I've HEARD the center console where the shifter is is easy to pop open for... certain....types.... of cargo.
My plan. You can toss any"thing" down towards the rear of the center console too incase the cop is smart and glances in there.

-Not all Celicas come with a rear windshield wiper.
-A GT-S muffler will bolt up to a GT.
so 2 things, can I shave off my rear wiper so to speak? my family has owned a few 2nd generation integras (hence my screenname, its stayed the same on all my boards:wiggle:) and with those people would remove the wiper and motor and then there was a cap from the lower end model of a civic hatchback (which didnt have the wiper like its higher end brothers), I think from whatever gen the 93s were, that you could buy at the dealership or junkyards that would plug the whole perfectly so no water leaked in. is there something like that for the celicas or do the wiper-less ones just have a different hatch altogether?
Secondly, whats the benefit of having a gts muffler on my gt if any? my muffler has a bunch of rips and holes that I've had to weld shut, since I really love to see sparks fly when I drive, so I really lower it in the back sometimes :gap:

The hatchback is different on those without the rear wiper, however there is no reason why you couldn't find something to plug the hole with, or weld the hole and repaint the lid.
As for the muffler, sometimes, especially so with aftermarket systems, people find a good deal on a GT/GT-S muffler, and they can use it on either a GT or GT-S.

Not on any Celica I have ever driven (pretty much every year and trim).

They simply are not interchangeable without modifying the harness wire by wire. A lot of work and not worth it, an acquaintance of mine learned that the hard way.

So, if you have a 2000 GT AT and want to make a swap to a 2003+ GTS MT, it's better to use a 2000-02 GTS MT harness?
Quite a few swaps have been achieved and this is the first I hear of harness incompatibilities between 2000-02 and 2003+ models.

Thing I found out the hard way was that if you have a stock alarm, you cannot open the hatchback with your key before you unlock the driver's door with the remote or the key. Otherwise the alarm will sound (I had just gotten a master key made for it since the used car dealer forgot to give me mine and I wanted to test being able to open the trunk cause I couldn't before with the key I was given).
I remember that when I first got the car the auto on/off headlights was novel to me. Also, that the interior lights don't come on if the e-brake is pulled when you start the car.
I love the auto on/off headlights. One of my more favorite features. Though I really wish the interior lights would come on before I pulled off the brake (it took me a few months I think to figure out why my internal lights seemed to take a while to turn on).

Did not know this either.
i just realized after almost a year of owning the car that there is trays in the doors to stash stuff...for some reason they just blended in too well and i never noticed them.
Bah, they're useless (every car I've ever had has had those, these are the first ones I've never found a use for honestly). I have yet to find anything that actually fits in them. I've never had such useless door pockets. Seriously, I've thought, oh, I'll put a little flashlight in there... doesn't fit (yes, a mini flashlight). Then later, well maybe I can fit an ice scraper in here (it's thinner than the flashlight). Doesn't fit. Try to put some paper in there, falls out. I cannot find anything they are actually useful for.
....for real tho, if you unlock your car with the factory remote, and dont open the door for like 30 seconds, itll lock itself...many cars do this, but I just found this out the other day about the celica.
No, that would be 45 seconds (there is a lot of these little things people mention I do know cause when I first got the car I was excited enough I read the manual ;) ).
lol those hooks are for the trunk net that you can buy as an accessory. not for hanging bags on them
Funny, the manual claims they are grocery bag hooks :P.
Theres also a fuel door sign on the cluster.. i have no idea why.
Neither do I. I like to make fun of it (I mean, unless you are renting the car, that sign should become pointless to the owner pretty quick).
i believe its actually like that on most cars, i've always used it to show me which side its on for all cars i've driven(suburban, maxima, g35, others)
The Celica is the only car I've had that points out where the gas cap is. Then again most of my cars were European (with the exception of a Nissan Pathfinder). Might have something to do with that (like try finding decent cupholders in a European car. The philosiphy on a lot of European cars is different).
Driver window has auto UP and well as auto down :gap: Helps soo much cause I have the 6 speed :applaud:
Uh, no it doesn't. The manual even just claims auto down. Or if it does, yours is special. I'll try your suggestion in your later post but I've many times wish it had auto up (I want that a lot more than I want auto down). Now the sunroof does have auto close which is really nice (as well as the windows and sunroof still able to close after you turn the car off for a set time, if you don't open a door first).

Mine definitely doesn't do this. Either yours is special, or broken.
Jon, how'd you get it to do that??
The hooks in the trunk ARE in fact grocery bag hooks, it says so in the owner's manual.
And I still have my spare tire in the trunk. For now.
Also, in the trunk where the jack is (the little cubbies on the sides) are great places to store things (all you who are hiding weed ;))

to the left of the steering wheel there is a knob with a pic of a light on it, turn that, and it should adjust the brightness. I keep mine at 3/4 brightness. i'll get some pics of it, and put em in my album of fully luminated, 3/4, 1/2, 1/4, and off. I do however though have an after market gauge face. but should work all the same.

fog lights turn off when high beams come on.
All cars with factory equipped fog lights turn them off when the high beams come on. Now what I've noticed that has changed is I used to be able to pull on the stalk to turn on the high beams and the fog lights would be on, but the Celica is one of the ones that does not do that.

I still do, never been used either, still has the paint markings. I read the press release regarding the Celica that Toyota came out with and they call the 2ZZ-GE a BEAMS engine. Thought that was pretty cool.
Beams engine was only available in the 3sge form. There are 3 versions:
Black Top.

Grey Top.
http://i.ebayimg.com/16/!B(ySCOw!Wk~$(KGrHgoH-DIEjlLlul7eBKeGfB!5uw~~_3.JPG
The Black Top was used in the JDM Altezza IS200 and RS200 rear wheel drive
vehicles.
The Red Top & Grey Top where used on the JDM MR2's and Celica's.
The fourth generation 3S-GE, also known as the BEAMS 3S-GE began production in 1997. The first version was equipped with VVT-i and produced 197 bhp (147 kW, 200 PS) @ 7000 rpm. It was available in a few models sold only in Japan - the MR2 G and G-Limited, the Celica ST202 SS-II and SS-III and the Caldina. BEAMS is an acronym which stands for Breakthrough Engine with Advanced Mechanism System.
In 1998 a second version was released with dual VVT-i (variable timing on both the intake and exhaust cams), titanium valves, battery-backed injectors and a slightly higher compression ratio (11:1 instead of 10.5:1). This engine powered the Altezza RS200 and produced around 207 bhp (154 kW, 210 PS) @ 7600 rpm.
The two variants are easily identifiable by colour. The cam covers on the earlier model are red and on the later model, black. They are often referred to as the "Red Top" and the "Black Top" respectively.
The "Grey Top" BEAMS 3S-GE was an available engine option in the Rav4 and Caldina GT in Japan. Even though the valve cover on this engine is black, it is referred to as "Grey Top" due to the grey intake plenum to differentiate it from the Dual-VVTi "Black Top" in the Altezza. Power output is 177 bhp (132 kW, 180 PS) @ 6600 rpm.
These are common to all 3S-G engines except for the BEAMS 3S-GE, which has a narrower valve angle.
Capacity 1,998 cc (121.93 cu in)
Bore x Stroke 86 mm (3.39 in) x 86 mm (3.39 in)
Intake Valve Diameter 33.5 mm (1.32 in)
Exhaust Valve Diameter 29.0 mm (1.14 in)
Included Valve Angle 44.5

LOL, Found this out the hard way... Unlocked the car from my second story bedroom, walked downstairs, out the front door, and down the driveway to the curb. Put my hand on the handle to open the door and *clunk* I heard the damn thing lock. Quite upsetting...
didn't know the trunk wouldn't stay up on its own in winter
Found that the hard way too... first time in cold weather opening the trunk, damn thing cracked me right on top of the head. I now use a custom fabricated specially measured length of 1" diameter PVC pipe I found in my garage as a prop. Pretty ghetto-tastic, if you ask me. But, im not gonna shell out 70$ for a new set of hatch struts either.

Beams engine was only available in the 3sge form.
Not exactly. Here is the link from Toyota that was sent out in September of 1999. Here is the portion I'm talking about:
For power, both engines in its lineup, including the high output 1.8-liter BEAMS 2ZZ with VVTL-i technology, feature all-aluminum cylinder blocks for reduced weight and increased fuel efficiency.
http://www.toyotacelicaonline.com/celica1/reference/2k%20celica%20press%20release.pdf
BEAMS is just a design designation for an engine and not specific for any engine. Also, more than likely it's for the VVT-i technology used since that's the first time the 3S-GE was called BEAMS. Just like T-VIS was found on 4A-GEs and 3S-GEs in the early years. Toyota even calls the 1ZZ-FE BEAMS as well.

That sign points to the side of the car with the fuel door. It isn't really useful if all you drive is the one car. I have a cavalier for my DD/winter car and the fuel door is on the opposite side from the celi. I often forget what side my fuel door is on going back and forth between the two vehicles so it's a good reminder at the gas pump, quick check and I know I'm pulling up to the right side. And the defrosting side-view mirrors was definitely a non-North America thing. If there are any in the states, I assume it was a very limited run (mistake). The last discussion I heard on it (here), everyone was curious whether the wiring was at least run to the mirrors in North American cars so that the conversion would be easy.

to the left of the steering wheel there is a knob with a pic of a light on it, turn that, and it should adjust the brightness. I keep mine at 3/4 brightness. i'll get some pics of it, and put em in my album of fully luminated, 3/4, 1/2, 1/4, and off. I do however though have an after market gauge face. but should work all the same.
whats up fry!
:werd: They all do. So do 99% of all cars. How long have you been driving? ;)

on mine the sunroof auto closes after 5 seconds of shutting off the car unless you push the sunroof button and u can even close the sunroof after the car has been off for a while and when it rains, the sunroof and side windows will close =P
Again, Are you a USA spec car? Do you have any other after market alarms that may be controlling this?

I'm fairly certain heated mirrors were a EUDM and maybe JDM only option.
I created a thread several years back about the M/HTR relay and MIR HTR fuse in the interior fuse box next to the passenger's feet. You might find it useful. :shrugs:
http://www.newcelica.org/forums/showthread.php?t=213554
Does anyone have the electrical schematic diagram for this? It could be a fairly easy mod to do.
Getting the mirrors would be the hardest part. ;)

Here's one I haven't seen yet, (and I've just spent the better part of my luch reading this entire thread) ;)
The cubby hole above the radio doubles as a cooler/ heater. :AF:
This of course is an "undocumented feature". :gap:
To test:
On a warm day, place a small item in there, or is you have stuff in there already, thats fine~use it.
Drive around with the AC on. Stop your car at your destination and take an object out of the cubby hole. You will see how much cooler it is.
The opposite is true with the heat on. ;)
You can keep you're,,,"stuff" nice and fresh/ cool in there!
(This is all true, but I believe it has more to do with the cubbies position relative to the AC dusts and openings!)

Kinda strange that Toyota believed that only US people are stupid enough to get killed by the windows... :gay:
I always though that the zippers for the seat was to remove it. have to check that extra space really soon. :AF:
I also didn't know before I joined the forum that US Celicas only have 5spd tranny, that you can have sunroofs in Celicas and that you could get cruise control.

We're gonna need to get the best of the USDM and the best of the EU thread comparison going sometime soon. *Laugh*
Otherwise, if someone wants to work on part numbers for EU spec side mirrors and their ability to fit on the USDM ones - and whether the USDM ones are wired for heat or not - that would be a grand idea!

Funny if you don't have such in Norway. At least most of the Celicas that were sold in Finland as new (not imported afterwards) has this option. Altough our seat heaters are not factory fitted as the installation was done at freeport during Pre-Delivery Inspection.
Maybe I should tear apart my spare seats, remove the heating elements and list those plus switches, relay etc. at nc.org classifieds :gap:

That's for safety reasons. In case you drive into a lake, windows should operate even if the car is toast so you can escape and not turn your Celica into a JDM coffin...

the only reason it does not have auto UP is because it requires a more expensive assembly since it needs to have the "object in the way" sensor. Celica's in america were really cheap cars if i remember right. Cheaper than the new tC? So they reeally reeeeaaaallllyyyy cut down on luxury.

Celica's were pretty pricey. GT's at ~21k and GT-S all the way up to 31k off the lot with your normal options.
