View Full Version : amp lights up but no sound..
hey, my amp just quit making sound the other day. Its a hifonics brutus 1200x1 @ 1 ohm, cd player is eclipse cd500, and i have 2 kicker comp vr 12"s wired to 1 ohm. The hifonics ontop of the amp always lights up, but the power or protected doesnt light up. I ran a wire from the battery terminal on the amp to the remote terminal and the power light would light up properly. I hooked the amp up in my other car and it worked fine. I ran a new remote wire from the cdplayer to the amp to be sure it wasn't cut anywhere and still no sound and power light didnt come on.. Any one have any ideas? Im thinking the remote turn on coming out of the cd player isn't working any more. Which i really hope someone can prove me wrong since its not under warranty any more.

when you hooked up the amp in your other car, it worked just fine, or did the light just come on?
because if it did, issues could be(im no expert)
1) your power wire got pinched somewhere, just get a voltmeter and at different spots, just poke and see if you're getting equal power all the way through.
2)maybe your remote wire port is done for, probably a new radio would be needed, or maybe a repair(im not too sure), i say this because you replaced the remote wire.
3) i know this is going to sound a bit odd, but check your ground, make sure your getting a good one. I had a similar problem to you, i thought it was the power wire, spent like almost 40 for a new one and it was my ground.
4)I purchased an amp once from ebay, and the power light turned on, no protection light was on, but no sound was emitted. This could happen, and if that amp wasn't meant to be ran at 1 ohm that could have done it, because not that many can run 1 ohm stable

Yeah, be more clear about when you put it in the other car. Did the amp turn on and produce sound through the subs or did the light only turn on with no sound?
If the amp can't take the 1 ohm load, the ohm/protection light will come on.
The amp shouldn't light up at all unless the remote line is getting power to it, so it shouldn't be a power or ground issue but you could double check. Where is your ground cable grounded at? Is it bolted down to a clean metal surface?
It could be a rca issue, whether it's the port in the amp or cd player.
I put a different cd player in the car and it's still doing the same thing. The hifonics on the amp lights up but the power light still doesn't come on . in the other car the power light came on and the subs was hitting . The amp is grounded by the hatch latch. I also ran new rca cables and another new remote wire. I'm clueless now, the amp power light still comes on when i touch a jumper wire from the power to remote terminal on the amp. The amp is a 1ohm mono amp and worked great for 2 months. iit has to be something small i'm missing since the amp worked fine in my other car but wont power up anymore in the celica after tryin 2 different cd players
I'm clueless now, the amp power light still comes on when i touch a jumper wire from the power to remote terminal on the amp.Does it produce sound @ that point?
Sounds like you may have a couple of different issues. I'd say that the first problem you need to solve is getting the power light to come on & stay on.

check your fuses and if not blown check for wire melt and if not its trash to bad if so a brutus expensive

yea check fuses
if there are any on the amp check them, there might also be some inside
if all fuses are good, you might have damaged the power supply somehow
i had an alpine amp that did the same thing. light on but no power
power wire fuse and fuse in the amp are good, ill check the ones for the car when a lil bit of snow melts outside. I bought my 2000 gts totaled and someone had already put the eclipse cd player in it and looks like they jus cut the wires going to the factory cd player and ran new wires to the head unit from all the eclipse factory replacements, is that the right way to install a cd player in a celica or is there a wire harness that was available to just plug in and wire up? If so i might hit the junk yard and try and find a stock cd player harness. It seems like every cd player i put in the car isn't getting enough power to turn on the amp now that I've tried the eclipse, a Panasonic and a Sony xplod cd player. And the amp works fine in my kia with any of those head units.
When i jump a wire from the remote terminal to the power terminal on the amp to get the amps power light to come on it still makes no sound. hmm confusing

I have a 01 gt-s and I couldn't ever find the "correct" harness for the deck install so I ran my own wires out to the door and probed the factory harness to find the pwr, mem, gnd, and remote wires. There is a harness made by Scoche called the TA-03 that people use in gt-s's now but sometimes it requires a resistor mod to get some feedback noise out of the rca channels.
For your amp I would reground the thing to the "D" clamps on the hatch floor. Those are a better spot than the hatch latch. If you've replaced the power wire, rca wires, and now the remote wire then that leaves the issue at the cd player. I would get out a multimeter and make sure you are getting voltage on the remote wire. If it's not sending voltage, there's one of your issues. You can always wire your amp to a switch so you don't have to run out and buy a different headunit if you find that you have a dead remote output. Hope this helps you some. Good luck!

I'm calling ground. you need to clean up what ever you ground up really well. take some sand paper and take the paint off of what ever your mounting to. that'll help alot im sure. i got buddies who do car audio and hey don't screw around with that but just run a self tapper in and say screw the factory bolt mounts just to cover there ass.
