First, I tried the search function and there were a lot of posts regarding idle problems but none specifically adressing this one.

I have a 2000 GT with no mods, about 32,000 km's (20K miles). When I start the car the idle is at 1,600 then after a few seconds it slowly drops to 1,200 then a couple seconds later it goes back to 1,600 and then stays there. I try revving and putting into gear and back into neutral but there is no difference. After driving for about half a minute it goes to about 700-800 (when stopped of course) and then stays there no matter how long I drive.

I understand that 700-800 is the correct idle spec., so what could be causing this. I am waiting for Toyota to call about replacing the belt tensioner (waiting for parts) so I don't want to take it to the dealership for this and then go back again when my parts get in. I was in this weekend at the dealership and of course the problem didn't start until Monday for the first time ever, so I am thinking the tech might have messed something up....I bought the car used two weeks ago and otherwise it is perfect.

When the engine is cold it is supposed to idle higher, so that could explain some of it.

If the engine is warm and you start the car where does it idle?

Right now, I haven't heard enough to classify this as a problem...

Yeah, if I start it when warm then it idles at the correct 750....so should I wait until the idle goes down before leaving or is it OK to drive off after starting (I usually wait about 15 seconds before driving off anyways)

Drive it as soon as you get your seatbelt on.
