I just had new drum brakes put in, both pads and the actual drums were replaced and they are making a squeaking noise everytime I brake lightly to come to a stop at a red light or stop sign. Does anybody know what could be causing this noise? I have taken it back twice and they couldnt duplicate the sounds and so they just cleaned and reset the brakes. What is the problem????

oo wow thats a while ago..you may need brake fluid the lines could need lubrication

so the cause of the noise could be low brake fluid levels?

I doubt it. The pads probably weren't installed properly. Either that, or you rotors are badly worn would be my guess.

heck with it, I had the same dam issue and I swapped out the whole thing for Disc brake and new pads + new rotors... guess what... they're still squeaking :bang:

Same with mine. I got a GTS and they squeal in the morning and sound like they're down to the metal. But the rest of the day they're fine. Had all rotors and pads replaced...:marky:

Brake could be slightly seized? Is that possible? My passenger front brake sqeaks but I lifted it on a jack ans saw that the wheel doesn't turn unless I apply my whole body weight to turn it? In comparison to my drivers which turns easily. Haven't repaired it yet, ill take it to the shop eventually lol

I don't know about the rear drums, I haven't messed with those in years, but I know that with disc brakes, if the pads are not greased properly when installing them, they can squeal. But not make any other noise though. That is usually indicative that something was installed incorrectly.

the shop doesnt seem to know what is wrong with them and they also cant duplicate the noise when they drive my car but its very loud and very noticeable and its kind of embarasing to drive and I want to get it fixed. Would it be better to just get all new drums and shoes again? even though the ones that are squeaking are only a few months old?

Mine do the same when I brake lightly. Many cars I drove did that and doesn't matter what kind of brakes and if they worn out or not. So I assume it's normal.

for discs this is often true, but are you sure your squeal is coming from the drum??? cuz drums dont usually squeal, they do like, heavy clicking sounds? lol

my rear brakes starting squealing/rattling recently too. I spent hours trying to figure out what is causing them to be noisy with no luck..

what is the shoe material made out of? if it has metallic written on the package then there gonna squeal. if they are ceramic there gonna be nice and quite.
but that tire that sticks. make sure your not in gear. and then check it. if it still doesn't turn free then make sure your caliper slider bolts are allowing the caliper to float back a hair so they don't rub. if that doesn't work you'll have to see if your piston is seized. and if it is then your going to need a new caliper.
if it doesn't get fixed then you could over heat those brakes on that stuck side. kill gas millage. warp rotors. you'll burn through pads quicker and have way uneven wear.
just saying....
and i got drums on my rear. hoping i can get them swapped to disks for a really good price. since there about shot and need replaced. there squealing too but i haven't looked into it yet.

I know its a little late to the point, but I had brake squeal with my front hawk hps pads.
I applied some anti squeal onto the pads which dries to be like rubber. zero squeal noise ever since.

the stuff i used was left over in a packet from some brake pads. SIG is the 'name' (silence is golden). it looks just like cheese from a snak-pak but dries into firm rubber. probably the same stuff but different color. it looks soo much like cheese spread i sort of want to eat it...

lol. nvm thats for sure not the stuff we use. sounds interesting. thought. the stuff we use is like a liquid. kinda has a ball at the end of the dispenser and you roll it on the pad. and it soaks into pad. then dries. very effective. very quite. not so cheesy.

this stuff is thick like a paste, works great but its ugly. for lubing things on brakes I use DBQ2200 from Wurth, also great at keeping wheels from seizing to hubs. http://www.international-auto.com/wurth-dbq2200-disc-brake-quiet.cfm its like a thick sticky silicone with high copper powder and moly. best slide lube i've ever used! also great to apply to the edges of pads so they slide in the brackets and it won't melt away like regular silicone will. the applicator unscrews from it and you just have a squirt can. for alloy wheels i smear it on the hub after cleaning the corrosion and i've never had a wheel stuck to hub after.
