so ive heard different views on what to do when i get new brakes

my dad says i should brake very easy for about 500 miles to break them in and my friend says i should take my car to any empty lot and drive 30mph and then just slam on the brakes to "bed" them in

so whats the right thing to do?

As much as I hate to say it; youre friend. The brakes should include proper instructions, but some don't.

Anyways, yes. You need to accelerate to ~40, and I hesitate to say SLAM on the brakes; moreover apply FIRM continuous pressure until the ABS kicks in. At about ~5 MPH, get off the brakes and accelerate as fast as you can (keep in first gear the entire time) and repeat. This should take app. 10-15 times. You should notice that with each braking, it gets a little easier. By the time you hit 10-15 and are done, it should reach a point where the feel isnt improving any, and the brakes bite sooner than to begin with. Smoke from the brakes is normal during the bedding process and so is brake smell. GL, this can be tricky.

so what would happen to the brakes if ive been just taking it easy of them for a couple weeks? should i just start "slamming" on them now?

i wouldnt do it that many times... i uasally perforn the same steps except i do it about 5-6 times. u dnt want to get the new pads and rotors too hot n warp them. repeat the steps stated above about 5-6times then go and drive around for about 15min and brake normally.

u never want to "slam" on the brakes, thats how pads and rotors become "crystalize" which means they get wat looks like a mirror finish and its like rubbing to pieces of glass together when u try to stop.

so they should still be ok after bedding them in after driving a couple hundred miles on them already?

Yes you can do this multiple times throughout the life of your disks and pads. From my understanding your transferring a layer of brake pad to your rotor when your preforming this procedure, after awhile that layer is worn away and you can transfer more to your rotor by doing it again.
