10mm bi hexagon socket is used to remove the headbolts on the 2zzge. i did a quick search and i cant seem to find the right kind of socket that works with our engines. is this the same as torx? where can i buy theses sockets? sears doesnt seem to carry them and a quick google search doesnt really turn up anything useful.
search for 10mm allens or hex bit sockets at any auto parts store, sears, etc

It's not a regular hex bit. It's like a 12 point star. Anyway I found out they are also known as xzn or triple square sockets. a search for those terms did yeiled some results.

I know they aren't regular hex bit but you can also use the 6 point bits as well to take the head off..
when torquing the head back on tho you should get the right bit..
I dont remember if they were 10 or 12 point.
but if they were 10 then the 5 points would work when removing..
It's been awhile since I rebuilt mines..
why are you removing your head?

I wouldn't use a 6 pointed socket on a 12 point bolt..it will round off.
It's called a 12 point socket by the way.
Square sockets are 8 point.

We are talking about the cylinder head bolts by the way..;)
You can not remove the head with a 12 point socket or a 6 point.
They require a bit.

Oh ok. Thought yall were talking about female type sockets.
I bought a set of allen sockets at sears for $10. They have a new brand called evolve and you should be able to get a set of the torx at the same price.

Is 'Double Hex' really the same as XZN? Wikipedia doesn't seem to think so:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triple_square
I've tried an M12 XZN bit in one of the head-bolts (though I'd really call it a cap-screw!) and while it does seem to fit, you can see that there's only contact in the corners of the socket - the flats don't align with the XZN tool...
I really don't want to round off those bolt heads - even if I end up replacing them with ARP's...

It's a 12 point, it's 12MM and it's a bit type, not socket. Socket fits over the bolt, bit fits inside the bolt head.

Yeah, sorry for not being clearer - the 'socket' I was referring to is the hole in the top of the bolt (which IMHO is really a socket head cap screw). I am using a 12MM XZN bit, but to me, the tooth profile isn't quite right. I would have expected the bit profile to be more like the outside of the wheel-hub nuts. :shrugs:
I'll give it a go anyway, couldn't find anything better at my local tool store or on Google...
Cheers.

Note an 8mm fits into an 8mm Craftsman 12point socket.
An 10mm fits into a 10mm Craftsman socket.
If you want better quality http://www.matcotools.com/ Search Toyota
Will bring up about all their bits and tools for Toyota.
http://www.snapon.com/ Search Toyota double hexagonal Note the 8mm is 3/8 drive a hard to use web site.
Autopart also sells other tools at a reasonable price.

I got the 10mm from napa to take my 2zz apart but found it to be too small, so I got the 12mm that worked. Has anyone had to use a 12mm even though the service manual calls for 10mm? I don't believe the motor has ever been apart before.
