A few nights ago I was on my way to work when I heard my car start missing real bad. I turned down my music and my car had already died. So I coast to a stop, 1 mile from work btw, and I try starting the car again. Nothing. I'm thinking, what the heck is going on with this thing. I wait a few seconds and try again. This is when I knew something bad happened. I turn the key to start the car and the motor starts turning but it wont kick over. Then I hit metal hit and the motor stopped turning. A few choice words then followed.

So, I have the car at home now and I'm tearing down the motor to see what all I need to fix. Here are some pics, you be the judge. No biggie right? lol <this is sarcasm

I'm sorry for the crappy cell phone pics.

The piston in cylinder 3 doesn't really look like a piston anymore. Awesome, I know. So, now comes the rebuild process.

yeah a valve or something got in the chamber and your piston ate at it. It might not be too bad like maybe the head is damaged or just might be the piston or might be a whole engine (both head and block got too damaged).

EMSRacerCeli03

for me when this happened a valve got sucked down and ruined my whole engine (peices of the valve got my head so bad and took bits out of my block and got a hole through that piston)

See, My Gt ****ed up too, due to negligence of my Father using the car while I was off in school.

But in the end I'm much much happier because it was an excuse to finally do my 2zz swap, and damn is it ever wat more fun. Assuming this is a GT though.

Yeah mine is a GT. I didn't know anything about cars at all when I first got my celica. My mistake. My parents are going to lend me some money to get the car fixed but I know my stepdad wont let me to the 2zz swap "because its too much money" lol whatever. I already starting building my spare head so hopefully by the time the block is rebuilt, I'll also have the head built. Built head on a new stock block shouldn't be too bad. :)

It looks like pieces of the piston are stuck in the threads of the spark plug. It took forever to get that spark plug out so I'm worried the head is shot. Luckily for me, I have a spare 1zz already tore down at home. I got it cheap since it had a spun rod bearing. I'll post up more pics when I get the motor out. I have no garage and its raining outside. Blah!

The thing that really sucked was that the next day I got my MWR valves in. Kinda rubbed in the fact that I can't do sh*t with them right now. lol

Thats funny because when I left for basic, my dad let my sister use my car. It was a 97 Toyota Camry. It had 280,000 miles on it when I left and was still running strong until she ran it out of oil after I left. Then, since the title was in my dads name, he decides he's gonna scrap the car. So, thats how I ended up with my celica now.

what cause the engine to do this?

EMSRacerCeli03

valve clearance was just a bit off and probably a bad seal too

Sh!t that blo's.
Good luck with the rebuild.

Were the MWR valves in the motor when it crapped out?

yacob06
03-11-2010, 07:17 PM
No they weren't. I've been saving to build my head and the day after my motor crapped out, I got the valves in the mail. Kinda made me mad because I was pumped to start building the head and then this happens. It'll get done eventually.

yacob06
03-12-2010, 10:37 PM
So yeah, I TOTALLY ate an exhaust valve. I just noticed that one of my valve springs on the exhaust side was higher than the others. BINGO! Now I'm just curious how much its all gonna cost to fix.

so tomorrow is dooms day, guess we will see what kind of damage is done to your block/head, either its gonna cause your blood pressure to sky rocket or it will be what your expecting, my guess is the first one tho haha, but we will see

03-13-2010, 10:27 AM
Yep. You'll never know if you don't get your ass over here and help me pull this motor out.

Any real idea why it happened?

yacob06
03-13-2010, 11:03 PM
I think it had to do with a misshift a while back. Shortly after I missed my gear (2nd instead of 4th), my car started to miss. Nothing crazy, just a minor miss that I could only notice if the car was idling SOMETIMES. I figured maybe a bent valve or bad seal. Then it just went from there I guess.

03-14-2010, 01:49 PM
Damn...
Well I'm glad you posted that up because I absolutely need my car to last me through college and I'm approaching the 100k marker very quickly. Reading this scared me a bit especially if you didn't know what happened.
Anyway, post pictures of your built head.
At least your stepdad is paying to get it fixed and plus its a badass learning experience.
Goodluck

So I need to vent a little bit. Good news is I'm very close to having the motor out of the car. Bad news is my parents lied to me. I went to them to talk about what needs to be fixed and the whole money situation. They looked at me like I was crazy and told me they weren't helping me out. So I asked them about how they said they would help me out 2 days earlier. They told me it was too much money and that I'm on my own with the car. Well f*ck me! It's not that I expect them to pay for it, I initially intended to pay for it myself but when they came to me and said, "Hey we'll pay for it and then you can pay us back," that took a whole lot of stress off of me knowing that hey, I'm being helped out and I appreciated it. But, when I went back to them to talk about the details and they completely do a 180 on me, it really pisses me off. I don't appreciate being f*cked with.

Sorry about that, just had to blow off a little steam.

There's a guy in the FS section that has a full 1zz head for $180 shipped.
I would jump on that.

yacob06

The head I'm not worried about. I have another head already, it's the block that I'm worried about. I don't have a whole lot of money to be shelling out to get the block fixed. I've been looking around trying to find a used block that I could throw my good head on.

EMSRacerCeli03
03-15-2010, 03:45 PM
yeah if a piston ate up a valve the cylinder wall is gone. And sleeving is very expensive. almost as much as buying a new oem short block. yeah try to find one used or a shop that will help out and offer warranty

jake check out the for sale section i think i seen a 1zz for sale

Well, I made some progress today. Finally pulled the motor out. The weather decided to cooperate and I had a little help so the motor is currently hanging on the engine crane. So tomorrow will be the fun part...tear down! I will definitely be taking a lot of pictures so I'll post some up probably tomorrow night.

I'm uploading the pics to photobucket now. Not as much damage as I thought. The cylinder looks good and the piston is still intact although its dented up. When I thought of a dropped valve, I thought of the entire valve falling into the cylinder. Just the bottom part fell in. My head looks like its completely shot though. Good thing I have another good head in the basement. I'm going to make a new thread with the pics here in a bit. I'll post the link.
