Has anyone ever done this? I got a ticket and I'm thinking of just doing it, but could it result favorably? Is there a point?

Sounds like a waste of time unless you are looking a busting point limits or if you were driving stupid

The main motivation is that I can mail it in and I wouldn't have to appear in court or anything. Too bad michigan doesn't have trail by declaration.

I wouldn't mail it in. They will put it right in the "fvck you pay us" pile.
I've done this once before for an illegal uturn I made. It was a complete accident on my part because i couldn't see the sign in the turn lane thanks to the 3 vans in front of me. As my "explanation" I went back the day before court and snapped some pictures from my point of view in my car that showed there was no way I could have seen the sign if a larger car was in front of me. That did the trick in court.
It's used mostly if what you did was an honest mistake. You will NEVER get out of a speeding ticket with that plea though.

I've sent explanation about "no front license plate" with attached pictures (mounted license plate pics). They just cashed my check. Pretty sure never looked at my explanation.
