Any chance we could get a fabrication forum in here? To me at least, the performance/ forced induction forums gear themselves more towards general Q&A concerning those fields. It'd be nice to have a forum devoted to welding, metal working, and general engineering of parts as well as being able to host build threads instead of polluting (or losing them in) the readers rides section. Just thought I'd throw it out there.

I second that motion. Newcelica needs more true DIY.

3rd.

Lots of knowledgeable DIY people here. It'll be a good place to collect and pass along their knowledge.

This needs to happen. Seeing as celica's don't have the largest aftermarket following fabricating stuff and making things work is the only option. It'd be nice to share ideas and projects in a dedicated forum.

Great idea shizuma.

Well I pm'd the giant red name in the sky, so we'll see what happens. I really do hope this pans out. I think we'd see a lot more serious, custom work go on (rather than the same bolt-on parts) if people had something to go off of. Especially with the prices of the cars being what they are nowadays.

Check out "articles" section in link, what a machine!! once I get press and milling machine I think the possibilities are endless.. cheap underpanels soon!!!!

*sigh* I haven't heard anything back yet....either he's been really busy or I'm being pocket veto'd lol.

Yes I HAVE for personal use.. plasma cam only right now though!! Just finishing wiring a new hypotherm powermax 45 plasma gun to machine and ready for some trial runs!! Going to make me a new custom C-One decal to start also...CUSTOM DECALS GUYS!!

Sorry guys I've been ridiculously busy lately..

These sounds like a good idea to me; should it be a sub-forum of another forum or its own parent?

Also feel free to post any ideas for projects guys!! can cut up to 5/8'' high grade steel.

Also.. If anyone has a beatrush underpanel to use to make the mold for press..I will probably just buy one, but we could make a deal.. you would getting your underpanel back plus some goodies or the actual remade underpanel plus yours to resell???

I am not expecting much response until finished products are shown..just tossing ideas out there. I am very excited about the future of this plasmacam and the interest it could generate here on newcelica!!

Agreed, it would then lend itself to pure fabrication rather than being associated with a particular subject (ie: JUST suspension if it was in the suspension forum or JUST F/I if it was located there). From here it could also be segregated into separate subcategories.

underpanel only for rear?

for aerodynamik parts i`ve got a lot of background knowledge (i study automotive engineering) and last semester i get conception of racecars as lecture :-)

Oh man, just wait until the 2nd version of my under body is done...

Rear underpanels sound very interesting. That could get a little complicated seeing as how that would be specifically for form/function and difficult to test its performance. No wind tunnels here....different exhausts and bumpers would make it vehicle specific only. Having a tough time "visualizing" an underpanel in the rear.

One would think the rear end of our celis must create a ton of drag under its current design though!!

One would think the rear end of our celis must create a ton of drag under its current design though!!

It does. The combination of the abrupt drop at the spoiler, the uncovered suspension components at the rear, and the "parachute" like rear bumper cover create a lot of direct and vortex-generated drag. Just by getting rid of the bottom section of the OEM bumper I was able to increase top speed at Road Atlanta from 12-1 by ~8mph and from 7-10 by ~12. After I made the first diffuser (planar design with a small tunnel and 4 vertical strakes supplemented by a flat under body at a 6 degree rake) I made even better improvements.

My 2nd revision underdbody consists of a 3D front diffuser section that will either evacuate out the sideskirts (if I have enough room, the car has been lowered ~ another 1" so total ground clearance is around 1.75" from the underbody) or into the wheelwells and out the sideskirts. Since I re-routed the exhaust/wastegate out the fender I was left with alot of wiggle room on the main section of the underbody and was able to incorporate a tunnel starting much father up on the car (around where the driver sits) at a much more aggressive rake (~12 degrees). The rear diffuser is much deeper now and I've sealed the main tunnel from the suspension components by getting rid of the spare wheel well and running droop limiters. I can't wait to see what she does around 60 :gap:.

This is a great idea.

It could be a parent forum, with sub-categories corresponding to custom work in aerodynamics, engine, chassis/suspension, paneling, audio, etc... nothing aftermarket, just pure custom DIY jobs.

This would also be a good business opportunity for Larry, since people could apply to advertise and sell their skills in that format as well.

It is not cheap..$10,000 USD plus $3,000-$5,0000 for plasma cutter, $1000 for filtration in your shop..and a shop or garage. The table is 4x4ft- I had a 60ftx40ft-16ft ceiling shop built last year for fablab and mechanics area and also woodshop.

danno
04-15-2010, 03:58 PM
oops 3-5k plasma, depends on quality of plasma! 1000 on filtration is give or take there is some pretty cheap setups..even homemade with tubs of water!

I'm sure you could make that back, may take awhile, if you lived close to me I would be there all the time having you make stuff for me :D

Thats the plan just may take a while!

Oh yeah you also need a computer for your plasma cam. Not like we all dont have one but having its own computer is ideal.

Like you said, Shizuma, there are already a lot of DIY threads made in the past. Are you going to look them up and move them to the fabrication forum?

Is it an idea to PM you the link to these threads so that you can decide if it is worth moving (or make a copy) of the thread to the fabrication forum?

Certainly, if the original poster of the thread is alright with it I see no problem. This forum was made to host DIY/build threads.
