View Full Version : Learning Manual - Lets do some Homework.

Ok I am learning to drive a manual, I was planning on getting an automatic, but after seeing some guy post a dyno of an automatic GT-S that only clocked 125 horses, I'll suck it up.
I've only drove a manual a few times, and aside from getting INTO first gear, I have no trouble.
For the streets I should shift at 2500-3500 correct? Now let me see if I can break down speeds for which gear (GT)...
1st gear - 1 to 20mph
2nd gear - 21 to 40mph
3rd gear - 41 to 60mph
4rth gear - 61 to 80mph
5th gear - 81+ mph
I also know these numbers can be increased if I go to the track, bascially increase the ranges by 10mph each, roughly, am I close?
Ahh, the wonderful topic of mis-shifting...
Are there any precautions for a driver mis-shifting? I mean can I go into 2nd from 3rd and no realize, or do I have to forcefully jam the stick into that wrong gear to make it mis-shift?
I don't plan on doing alot of racing, but I also don't want to be driving down the street and **** up (EVERYONE ****S UP AT SOME POINT) and screw my engine.
Anyhow, throw in your 2cents and advice. :)
Well my GT-S 6spd was my FIRST manual car... i have only practiced on a van before , and it didnt act anything like a sport car LOL. It will be very intimidating the first few days.... feels like there is like 10 gears, but i do shift 1 to 3 to 5 ... or 1 to 3 to 4 to 5 .... whatever. You can shift at 3000 or 3500 rpm and stil total skip a gear THEY ARE CLOSE. I personaly only shift though every gear when im joy riding or racing, or showing off infront of some hat a s s chick:naughty: Oh and it really wont let ya into first gear without just about a complete stop .... sometimes it slips in .... but even if its a creep .. go in 2nd. I have a habbit of thowing it in neatral , and gliding , or just holdin down the clutch all the way to see if the idiot in front of me is going to a complete stop err what (luisianna drivers suck at driving, i miss up north)
You will maybe buck once err twice, but remember that the clutch catches VERY LOW.
Glad you wised up and are getting a 6 SPD ... you wont regret it... i did when i bought an GT auto before i traded in for the GT-S 6 spd.
P.S. Mishift is NOT a problem with all the new late 01 .. 02 and now 03. You gotta purpossly try to mishift.

I am getting a GT, not a GT-S, I just used the GT-S dyno from above to prove a point.
A GT-S is what, 160hp stock? That GT-S dyno'd are 125hp or something, thats nuts, do you know how much money it would cost in aftermarket parts to recover 35hp? Thousands.
I LOVE to drive, I've put 50,000 miles on my car in 2 years I love to just cruise so much. This is an automatic. Is my cruising experience going to be ruined by always having to shift?

Looks like you said shifting for a GT. The major mis-shift problems have all been with GT-S. I can only remember one person posting here with a GT misshift. The gates are wider and therefore harder to misshift with a 5 spd anyway.
LOL no the GT-S is 180 HP stock ... puts down close to 168, almost 170 down to the wheels. The GT is only 130 ... big drop in HP. I say wait 1 month and get an 03 the rev limit is back to 8350 RPM ..... what fun its gonna be:thumbup:
Get the GT-S it IS WORTH IT ..... BELIVE ME! Just test drive the GT-S , and you will be like GT ..... what gt ..... NEED GT-S.
ONCE you feel that lift kick in .... OMG its like a drug rush .... the GT does not have the lift technology
GT- 130HP- rear drumb brakes -VVT-I engine- 5 spd :p
GT-S - 180HP- ALL disk brakes- VVTL-I engine - 6 SPD:D :naughty:

HaHa, I am saving for a 2000 GT because I can't afford a BRAND NEW Celica, and the insurance would be to much.
I only make $800-$1000 after taxes a month, so I am saving up $3000 plus my $2000 trade-in for a downpayment. Hoping to score a Celica for under $15,000 with less than 50,000 miles on it. I'm praying to find a Spectra Blue, but any color other than black would be fine with me. :p
I'm also doing this so car payments and insurance still leave me enough cash to pay my other bills and atleast save $100-$200 a month for aftermarket parts.
I mean I COULD buy a 02 or 03, but I don't feel like living IN my STOCK celica till its paid off.
:werd:
LoL :)

errr... 140!
plus they have close to the same torque....
depends on what you're looking for... right now it seems as if the gt has more potential for turbo in the long run... but the gts does have rear discs and lift(abet weighting more :p)
btw, i was the guy with a misshifted GT. it was not by me, but thats another story. it's the only case of this happening. funny thing, one of the main reasons i got a gt instead of a gts is because i didn't want to worry about misshifting

The guy posted a pic of the dyno sheet (couple days ago on this forum, forget his name) and it showed a 2002 GT-S Auto with only 125-130 horses....

I bought a 2002 GT and it is my first car with a manual transmision. I never cared much for driving before. It wasn't that I didn't like to drive I just didn't care either way. Now, I LOVE to drive. I have to fight my fiance whenever we go anywhere as to who will drive.
As far as tips on the learning aspect... If you can have a friend give you lessons. As you know you WILL stall, and you will be doing a few hard lurches. Don't get disappointed everyone does this, and you will learn.
GOod luck and have fun!

Yuck, thats just as bad, your GT-S auto Dyno'd at 149 and the factory claims 180HP?
Its like your automatic transmission automatically lost you 30hp.

First of all, it's 149hp to the wheels. It suppose to have 180hp to the crank but due to the gearing on the auto, it doesn't have 180hp to the crank.
The 6 speed has 168hp to the wheels, which is equal to 180hp. Which means the car only loose 18 hp from the crank, 10%. Damn that's efficient.

Ok so lets take that 18hp for example.
So now hes got to dump roughly $700-$800 for a cat-back and cold air intake just to get back to where a stock MANUAL GT-S starts off.
To the every day driver no big deal, but when you mod something you sure as hell want ABOVE factory specs, or am I missing something? :)

what are some of you guys smoking? a 6-speed on a good day with some LUCK can dyno 160+ stock...i've seen average 158-162whp.
149whp on an auto is obscenely good considering some people have dynoed 120s and 130s is average...
was your dyno SAE corrected?
the power isn't even the main issue with the auto gts. well the horsepower isn't. 130-140+ is still decent at the wheels for this curb weight, but there's like 100 torque at the wheels, or something almost as bad. plus there are 4 gears which are geared like 1, 3, 5, 6 in the 6-speed. it's like you skip gears when the car is shifting normally. that's what robs it most of the speed.

Saving4Celica,
You're worrying about it way too much man :)
I went from my beat-ass auto ford ranger, to my GTS after only having drivin a stick twice.. my friend's old Corolla, and my roomate's Integra, and I meshed with the car almost instantly. It takes some practice, but don't break it down to numbers like you've done with this post. Get in, and drive..

why do you guys believe on what people tell you..... this and this has this much horsepower. Drive the car yourself and find out. And do not say a GT is much faster than a GTS. Have you ever races your GTS against a GT? or vise vurse? what was the outcome?
