Shell Oil Co. still is receiving complaints from Central Kentucky customers about a gasoline additive the company pulled from its pumps in May.
The additive, introduced in the Lexington market last fall, was supposed to give motorists more miles to the tank. But the gasoline was discontinued at 150 Kentucky stations after Shell began receiving thousands of complaints that a similar additive was causing problems with fuel pumps and gauges in cars in Canada.
Since June 1, Shell has received 168 complaints from Central Kentuckians, 80 percent of which were made the day after Shell announced it had discontinued the gasoline, said Rick Wirth, spokesman for Shell.
Wirth said the company considered only 32 of the complaints valid.
The average reimbursement has been $480 for expenses including repairs, rental cars and hotels.
"We are reimbursing for any expense related to the inconvenience," Wirth said.
The company has no immediate plans to reintroduce the additive in the United States or in Canada.
In Canada, low-fuel indicator lights in the affected cars, mostly DaimlerChrysler vehicles, began to blink even though the tank was full, and the needles on the gauges swung back and forth at random. In some cases, fuel pumps clogged after heat caused the additive to gum up.
Shell Canada has paid motorists thousands of dollars for repairs. A class-action suit against Shell was filed April 8.
