So I have been quoted on getting custom exhaust, and upon looking under the car I noticed if I remember correctly two after CAT mufflers. The larger box muffler and the rear tail muffler (correct me if I'm wrong I haven't looked under there in quite some time.)
So I was thinking If the the tail muffler is a straight through (not sure), would it be beneficial to remove the large "box" muffler and just do straight pipe back to the tail muffler? I want to keep it looking stock, but I also want have a more free flowing exhaust system.
Has anyone done this?
If so, were there any noticeable gains?
If not, would this possibly be beneficial to performance?

you're in california, if you remove the muffler, you will be louder and a cop might pull you over.. you might be given a fix it ticket which leads to wasted money and time.

Yes it will be louder, but so would aftermarket exhaust, which is even more expensive.
I was merely interested in it as an alternative to aftermarket exhaust.

You can do it. Just chop off the big "box" and weld in a section. Take it for a drive and see if you like it. If not just put it back on, it's not a big deal.

Just unbolt your exhaust system, drive around like that for a few days, if you don't get pulled over and ticketed, then follow through with cutting out the muffler and running a pipe straight back. You'll have to do an S bend around the suspension though.

ok sorry op to thread jack but i got a question:
i have a mad rattleing noise when i put a stock gt-s exhuast on my gt but now this noise keeps on rattleing when i turn my car over. and i think i know what it is and its eitehr the canister or that the flange on the exhaust doesnt match up with the flange from my oringal gt piping. the flanges dont line up casue the canister is too big i thing and hitting the bottem of my trunk.
so question is the canister i talk about the reninator?

cause if it is then im going to get a welder just to cut that off and make some stright pipe from the axel to the tip.
i know i know its going to sound looud but hey my car is already super illegal ahha

check to see if your heat shield is loose above the muffler. that would cause rattling.

I did it. Had a buddy at a muffler shop put a section in. Was way to loud for DD, got a glasspack from dynomax to put in the section. Loved it, always got complements for being a unique sounding 4cyl. But if I were you, buy an aftermarket, or atleast save the muffler cuz if you need to sell or get tired of it, you're screwed like me. I'll send you my custom pipe for your stock one:chuckles:
