Stopped by the local Nissan dealer to see if they had recieved their allotment of Z's yet. The sales rep I talked to said that delivery has been delayed for at least 2 months. I don't know how this applies to the rest of the country, but at least where I went that was it.

Following were the initial packages and prices:

350Z 6 spd Manual $26,269

350Z Enthusiast Auto $29,219
6 sp $28,249

350Z Performance 6 sp $30,429

350Z Touring 6 sp $33,179
Auto $31,589

350Z Track 6sp $34,079

There is other info about options, but I didn't feel like typing it. If you want to know, ask and if I have it I will add.

The most interesting thing is that Nissan (Corporate) has sent notification to all dealerships that they are to charge a premium for all Z's that were not pre-ordered. This is to be anywhere from 4K to 5K and up depending on trim level.

So MSRP is really 4-5k higher than sticker. That seems like some sort of BS to me, But this is the second vehicle I have seen Nissan do this on.

Well I know some of you could care less and some already know this, just a little info.

No, this news should be appreciated by people looking into this car. A lot of people were not sure about if dealers would be marking the car up, and the pricing of some of the packages.

I bet that is BS from the dealer who wants to gouge and put it off on Nissan. If this was true and there is an actual notification (ie documentation) from Nissan ordering dealers to sell for $5k more than the official Nissan advertised retail prices, then I think that should qualify as bait and switch. There's no way Nissan would do that themselves, but I wouldn't put it past the dealers to gouge on their own.

ah, that is what I thought too. But with the history of Nissan, They did the same thing when the Xterra came out, at 3 dealers I went to.

Also their website lists that they reserve the right to change pricing and availability at any time.

That's probably a usual disclaimer so that they can raise the list price later in case they have to, but they can't still advertise a car at let say ~30K and order all dealers to only sell at $35k. The dealers can probably try to get what they want on their own while Nissan turns a blind eye, but Nissan who is advertising the list price probably can't officially tell them to sell only for $5k more.

And if they do that, there is no way they are actually going to sell as many as they hope too. It would be a huge mistake. I will never, ever buy a car for more than list. Also, I don't remember hearing that this was supposed to be a low number dealer allocated car. I thought they were shooting for high sales numbers closer to Miata volume than S2000 or MR2 Spyder volume. I read that 5000/month are to be made with 2 or 3K (don't remember which) headed for the US market. That is a lot of cars. Also, the G35 coupe is coming out and is almost the same car at almost the same price, but with a much better warranty, service, and nameplate. If they gouge, then I would get the G35 coupe instead. I actually think it looks better anyway.

I dunno. I think Nissan is making a smart move on this one. With limited production numbers i think they can jack the price up the first year and still sell all of them. I think the majority of buyers this year will be people who have tons of money and think this car for 35k is cheap. Also alot of buyers will be people who had 240/280/300's and want another z car. My fiends dad had a 280zx and loved it to death. I know for a fact that when that thing comes out, it's his, no matter what the price is. I think of it this way, let the rich guy down the street buy one tomorrow for 40k and get everyone thinking it a really nice car and then ill buy one next year for 25k. Im just glad that its being released as a Nissan rather than an Infinity so that one of us may actually be able to afford it (cough...IS300....cough).

It may be a pain to consumers, but it's a smart business move on Nissan's part. They'll make lots o' money because of the high anticipation for the Z. I guess people will have to wait 'til at least the 2004 model year until they can get a decent deal on a Z. I personally wouldn't buy it at the marked-up prices.
