Well another hour or two on the rollers courtesy of Tom Airey Tuning this morning.

Things are looking very good indeed, still having issues with fuelling but I was pretty sure this would be the case.

The car now has a boat load of bottom and mid range power and the top end requires a bit of fine fettling and an issue with fuel supply sorting and I will have quite an impressive output.

The figures so far are 168bhp at the wheels, this is at approximately 5000rpm so room for more, at this point the engine is pinging like a good 'un. BTW - This equates to a tad over 200bhp at the crank, this is more then 60bhp up on my baseline, pretty good gain if you ask me, and not even fully tuned as yet, bear in mind that expectations where of a 40% increase so I am well pleased, it basically means that in its current form it is more powerful than a stock VVTLi

Problem with the fuelling is whats called pulsing. What is happening is the injectors are so huge they are pulling fuel from the rail faster than it can fill up. This isn't necessarily a pressure problem, more likely a bore size, ie the capacity of the rail is insufficient for the full load requirements, not exactly shocking as the injectors are more or less 50% larger than stock.

My solution to this will be:

Uprate fuel pump.
Increase size of fuel feed line from pump to engine bay.
Fit a four way splitter on the engine end.
Distribute the fuel directly to each injector from the splitter.

If this doesn't solve it then I may have to convert the car to a return line fuel system and fit the SARD regulator I have to keep the pressure constant, I don't feel this is going to be necessary though, we shall see

Well thats about it, I also just fixed the ABS fault my car has had for a while, turned out to be a bit of didgy wire on the ABS ECU, signal from the front right speed sensor wasnt getting through, five minutes and a bit of solder later all sorted.

perhaps if you read jp this supercharger kit from japan will give you some clues how to get your working. http://www.blitz.co.jp/products/compressor/compressor-kit.htm

Hey, if you absolutely hit a brick wall, we're having substantially-higher-flow/volume billet fuel rails made.....I'll get you one if you'd like. :)

Santana - Thanks but it is working, I just take a more methodical approach to solving the problems than simply throwing in as much hardware as I can find.

David - Cheers, I'll bear it in mind, only problem I can see is that the Greddy injectors alter the position of the top feed as they are a larger body than the stock ones, is your rail adjusting for this or have you managed to get injectors with the same sized body?

My plan is to make an injector top (8mm hole) to -4 adaptor, this will sit on top of the injector, then I will have a clamp plate made up which will basically be there to bolt to the original two holes and have holes cut in it at the points where the injectors come through. I'll then use a four way distribution block fed from a -6/-10 fuel line, this will feed the injectors directly.

how much torque are you at now?

Short answer, no idea.

celicauk,
So, apart from the physical limitations of your current fuel system, has the Power FC been working out better than your previous engine management systems? Anyway, thanks for the info, man.

Oh yeah, the Power FC is an awesome piece of kit, I knew it would be good but I was concerned about its lack of pressure sensor, bar the MAF of course. Seems not to matter a bit, a bit of mucking around with the fuelling and ignition and the car is running great.

If I was to pick any points, it would be the fact that I can't seem to buy the software for the laptop, so the only interface I have is the Commander, whilst this gives access to pretty much everything it lacks the ability to block change settings, which can be tedious, its a 20 x 20 array, one each for ignition, injection and VVT, so thats 1200 individual parameters, not including the other setup stuff. So if anyone can get me a copy of the software I'd be most grateful, there are no power excel shops in the UK.

Unfortunately, Apexi's Power Excel shops in the US don't sell the laptop software to the public. I know XS Engineering has it, and you can call them to see what they can do for you. Hope that helps.

Cheers for that, I'll give it a go.

OK, tried XS and Apexi USA, they can't help with either the software or the link kit so basically I'm screwed.

Any other ideas?

hack their corporate network and hopefully they'll have the file sitting on a server somewhere?

LOL, nice idea, but gee wouldn't that be illegal :D

If you know someone who speaks Japanese, you could try to contact Apexi headquarters in Japan. Here's a link to their site:

I spoke to a tuners here in the UK, apparently it took them a year and a half to get the unit and they aren't Apexi Power Excel dealers.

Also eMithered them on a couple of occasions and no response, not even a fukc off :)

Light at end of tunnel though, a friend of a friend is a car/parts importer and goes to Japan regularly (once a fortnight) gave him the details so he is going to try and buy/beg/steal one for me :)

Since 200HP @ 5000 rpms is 190 ft-lbs then he's making at least that much.

sublime, is there a direct formula for that, I hadn't realised it was so clear cut.

Cheers

yep, hp = tq*rpm/5252, or tq= hp*5252/rpm

Cool, thanks for that :)

Makes me very happy as I was aiming for about 200lb/feet of torque.
