I am soon to get a celica gt or gts. I heard somewhere that the gts engine is more "fragile" than the gt. Is this true?

A lot of people say that, but it is simply not true. This all stems from the high compression of the engine and this relationship to forced induction. A GT with a turbocharger bolted on to it could run a higher amount of boost, where as a GTS engine would have to run a pretty moderate amount of boost due to the high compression that the GTS uses. This makes people think that the GTS engine is more fragile than the GT engine because it cant take as much boost. Kind of a mute point anyway, a GTS running 6psi of boost is still going to make more power than a GT running 10psi of boost. On the other hand, if you tried to run a GT engine up to the 8,400 rpm's that GTS see all the time, the GT engine would break, but no one ever makes that comparison for some reason.

Both, Celica GT's and Celica GTS's are really great cars, but if you can afford it, you should definately get the GTS over the GT. With the GTS you get 40 more HP, lift, rear disk brakes, and a six speed transmition.

So is it worth the money to get the GTS?

If you're going to get in debt for a car get one that's gonna' keep you happy while you struggle to make the payments unless it puts you over the edge financially (never stopped me before though).

I'm with The Game, if you plan to get an auto, then you are better off with the GT....

It comes down to what your looking to get, if your not looking to do any

Even if you do want to do mods don't rule out a GT. Just don't forget you are not only talking about up front costs but long run costs. My main reason for getting the GT was insurance. My insurance would have gone up an extra 500-1000 / year for the GT-S. Might want to check that out too.

i already pay $2000 a year for the 2000 v6 xle camry im driving right now

in addition to insurance, let's not forget that you'll also be saving about $.20 a gallon on gas! GT uses 87 octane, not 91;) So think of it this way, if you put 10 gallons in once a week for a year, which is the minimum you'll probably use, that translates to $112 more each year just for premium..... just another aspect to think about:wiggle:

I first bought a used 2000 GT. It was a descent car. I lightly modded it.

Raced a GTS once, and was never really "happy" again. I traded my GT in for a 2002 GTS about 1 week ago.

I lost a lot of money, I know, I never shoulda gotten the GT. In the "long run" I would have saved maybe $4-$6K's when you take into account the trade in value they gave me as well as the loan I previously was paying off and now more added interest. Yadda Yadda.

The GTS uses more gas, or at least it seems like it to me. I was getting a consistent 23-25mpg with my GT, now I'm getting about 19-22mpg. Big difference..

You pay more insurance, you pay more for gas. Two major financial issues. Your payments will be higher as well, depending how much down payment you give.

Overall, I'm happier with my GTS, especially now. At first, I was kinda regretful because I was paying $150/$160 for Car/Insurance, now it went up to $380/$312. I had to add another car to my insurance and put my sister as the primary driver of my celica. Insurance went down to $202 or so.

I liked both cars I guess, but I really like my GTS more. I probably could have modded my GT to go faster than a lot of modded GTS, but equally modded, a GTS will clearly have greater advantages.

Plus the leather seats are quite nice too ;/

Your dad wants you to have more power? Thats awesome. My dad haaaaates the fact that I like modding the car but I bought it so tuff. Now the funny thing is telling my mom I'm going to the track...

my dad wants me to have more power.....but, i don't think he'd like the fact of me modding it. he'd be afraid i'd ruin the engine and destroy the whole car.

I feel you Jas. My parents get after me all the time. I just got me K&N CAI and a Tunabe Racing Medallion Exhaust. I proved it 2 them though that it hasn't blown up. They think I might blow it up like my friend who is goin for his 3rd GTS engine. I have a GT. I would want a GTS but I'm happy with what I've got. Just turbo-charge the GT and you will pay a lil more than getting a GTS from the dealers. It'll be worth it.

my dad's idea of having more power is to buy a Z28:chuckles: He never liked the idea of modding a car, he thinks it's unnoticable and a waste of money........ oh well, that's not gonna stop me:D

I think you should go with what you can a afford......I could only afford a used 2000 Auto GT and my payments are 400 a month....But then again i'm a 17 year old with a crappy paying job and i bought while i was still in school.....Just remember it's not worth having a nice car if you can't take it anywhere cuz you have no money for gas lol

totally agreed... and I'm gonna add on to that, what you can COMFORTABLY afford. Remember to have a decent amount left over for gas, insurance, goin out, buying stuff, emergencies, and so on..... I too am in college, and I hate to use this word, but I'm gonna settle for a GT. I've driven an auto GT before and I thought it was pretty quick on it's feet, so I think a GT 5spd will still make me happy. A GTS is attainable for me, but in my position, I don't wanna dish out that kinda money every month:rolleyes: This way I can buy a Celi and still afford to have a life, hehehe...... Anyways, if you're working with $30,000, then obviously price isn't a factor, but if you have living expenses such as me and many others, think twice about your budget and go from there.... Sounds easy to get by on X amount of dollars now, but just make sure you don't regret it down the road when you're broke and driving around in the GTS you actually should've held off on... I'm impatient as well to buy my Celi, but I'm saving up for a few more months so I got a good bit to put down on it;)

Yeah a lot of people think they can afford really nice cars but they forget about such things as insurance (really expensive on a GTS, about 50 bucks more a month...i work at an insurance company), Gas (your gonna wanna drive it a lot when you first get it...to show it off)......oil changes, emergencies(what if something goes wrong on it), breaks, tires, ect.....plus money for yourself....ex) food, clothing, buying stuff for your car!

don't forget speeding ticket fines, they're a bitch and you'll see plenty of them if you wanna take full advantage of lift:rofl:

If I was buying new, I'd go with the GT. The only thing the GT-S has that I think is worth the extra money is 4-wheel disc brakes as opposed to the disc/drum setup on the GT, but that doesn't justify the price increase. If you can find a used GTS for cheap, though, go for it. That's what I did.
