hey guys i was wonderin while i was underneath the gts, "there must be an easier way to change out the oil without getting oil burned and also covered with oil, and also having ot remove teh skid plate."
the other night i saw a commercial on the new fram "sure drain". i persoanlly have never used this before but it sure looks like it help alot with your every other month oil changes and will make life alot easier for me. i can see the pros and cons about it but there are more positive aspects of the sure drain.
pros:
no more oil burns
no more oil on hands
no more splatter on garage floor
no more picking up the drain plug because i dropped it in teh oil cather
no more tryin to find out which way to unscrew the drain plug
nomore stuck drai plugs
cons:
wonder if it drains all of the oil
how dependable would the sure drain plug be under leakage
wonder if it works on all cars
well as you guys can clearly see teh pro outrun the cons, so i think i will get one and try it out but since its a new product i cant seem to find one anywhere.
what do you guys think of this new product and would you guys use it and feel safe using it?
i will buy one and let you guys know. thanks

I've never specifically seen the fram, I think that the quick drain systems that are out there in general are great. I've never heard of anyone haveing one fail on them and cause damage to their car, it just makes it easier to change the oil. Really, the only con I see is the cost of purchasing it, which is minimal.

I thought about getting one, but decided against it. Primarily because I don't trust Fram at all. Their oil filters, for example, look fine on the outside, but the internal components are the worst of any oil filter company. So, to relate this to the sure-drain plug, I'm guessing that all of the internal parts are as cheap as they figure they can get away with, so I wouldn't trust it to seal 100% for the entire duration of the oil change. The other compelling reason not to get this, in my opinion, is that oil loss can have such catastrophic results in any engine, but especially in a high-revving engine like the 2zz-GE.
FWIW, I did manage to drain the oil without burning myself last time I changed it, so it is possible. For the extra piece of mind, I'm willing to deal with the inconvenience.

when the bolt is about to fall out keep tapping it and move your hand away quickly heh. sometimes it works.
I'm not really sure how this product works, but wouldn't u still have to change to oil filter? So u'd still have to remove the panel and u're probably gonna get oilon your hand anyway.

thats what i do but still i get oil burned. and your right about the oil filter it does create a oily mess anyway, why not just go all the way and get burned by the oil drain lug and oil filter.LOL

You could always wait until the engine cools down.

I'm no car genius, but I've done my own oil changes many times without the oil burning my hand. The drain plug itself might still be hot, though.
All I did was loosen the drain plug with a wrench, enough that I can unscrew it with my hand, then just keep pushing upwards as you twist it off. The upward pressure should keep the oil from leaking or dripping onto your hand, and as soon as you think you completely unscrewed the plug, just pull the thing away. I overcompensate and keep twisting for a while to make sure I did remove it completely. Some might hit you but if you're quick enough, none of it should.
I've done it and like I said, I'm no car genius. :)

Oy, just do it in the morning when the engine is cool. Starting the car prior will actually get more oil into the engine and less in the oil pan. It really doesn't matter at all though. OMG, some of the old oil mixed with the new! See how dumb it sounds to get your hand burned by it :) LoL

sup everyone.... i got the "sure drain" the last time i changed my oil and just got to use it earlier this week. overall i would give it a 7.5 out of 10.. it's handy, it just takes a little longer to drain out, it's a little slower....but i don't know if that's because i didn't screw it on all the way.. but yeah the messiest part is still taking off the filter, there's no real clean way around that. but as for the oil drain, it's cool because you don't have to use tools and stuff. sorry so long.

there are many horror stories that people tell, having their oil "professionally" done... lost nuts, bolts, uncapped stuff... lost skidplates....
i've done my oil myself twice.. no burn... its somewhat warm, but not hot... skidplate's a headache tho.....
my auto professor says that the best kind of filters for the car is the brand that the car is..... ie- have a ford car, get a ford filter. FRAM looks alrite on the outside, but inside, is a completely different story. he took apart oil filters and compared them...then ran some tests...... the factory brand ones always did better...they designed the car.... FRAM just needs its filter to fit the whole.
just my $.02, and his..... :gap:

The sure drain is a joke. It looks fine concept wise, but the hole is so small, I would think after a few changes the internal mechanisms will get gunked up with metal filings.
And I just changed my oil last night. The drain plug is the easy part. I never get burnt by that. It's the damn oil filter that makes the mess. When someone figures out how to do that without getting oil everyone, lemme know.
And you want the oil somewhat warm when you change. The oil will flow better and drain faster, getting more of the crap out of the bottom of the pan. Warm oil is just like warm water....doesn't burn, just warm!

I let my car run for 1 to 2 mins...then i change the oil....its warm...so it flows better, but its not hot to burn me. I dont get any oil on me either (except from the filter) ...just crack the drain plug with the wrench...or socket...then while unscrewing it by hand...push in...you will feel when the threads are all the way out of the oil pan...then just pull the plug outta there quick....no oil ...no mess....no big deal.. Peace.

I've always been under the impression that you want to change your oil when it's cold. This way the oil has drained out of the engine, and all the sediment has settled to the bottom of the oil pan.

The Fumoto drain valve is an excellent product. If it's available look into that.

BlackGTS2002 basically covered how to remove the drain plug, which is universal. A shop towel helps also.
Oil filter.....besides being hot....let the oil drain for about an hour or more, then tackle the oil filter (better than having the oil filter under the exhaust manifold like Toyota engines past)
