Recently bought a celica with a blown motor to swap a new one in. The whole car was pretty rough, obvious the previous owner took poor care if it. The engine is half taken apart sitting in the car. Battery was missing so I swapped a new one in discovered that many of the electrical systems are not working.

So far I can say for sure that the power locks, power windows, wiper blades, brake lights, stereo, mirrors, and turn signals are not working.

Fog lights and head lights may have blown bulbs, haven't had time to check. Pulled all the fuses in the engine bay and passenger fusebox and none seem to be blown.

Anyone have any ideas where I should start? I'm have little experience with electrical systems and I'm a bit over my head here.

Thanks
-Alan

first, check to see if your getting a good ground to the chassis. if thats good, check for power at the fuse boxes. start with the basics of making sure they didnt lop the main leads in half. post your results here. ill be here all weekend, my chick ditched me so im chillin at the ranch house with nothin' to do

Thanks for the reply. I just picked up a multimeter at autozone so I'll let you know what I find tomorrow

is the body ECU even in the car??? sounds like some of that stuff would be related to either a blown body ecu or one that's missing (or the wiring harness to it is screwed up)...

I'm beginning to think the same after going through the repair manual. The ECU is in the car but it's obvious it has been tampered with. The cover has a whole in it and the mounting brackets on both the fuse box in the passenger side and in the engine bay are broken off.

about 30 minutes ago I went out to take another look and found something that looks like it has been spliced into the wiring harness. hard to get a good look at it right now. It says Boss Performance. I'm thinking its one of those stupid fake performance boosters. Looks like I may need to replace this ECU with the one from my car.

to confirm. The body ECU is the red box sitting in the bottom of the passenger side fuse box? Does the dash need to be removed in order to replace this?

im fairly certain the dash does not need to be removed, but i would start in the engine bay first. start at the battery, hit the two fuse boxes in the engine bay, then head inside the car. that way you work your way down the system. remove the damn performance chip, it isnt doing anything good for the car. obviously the people who had it before you were morons. our ecus are kinda hard to kill, i would check all other wires/electrical systems before ordering one, especially if you have power to NOTHING. body control module and ecu only do so much, you should have something at least...

Well I have both an extra body ECU and ECM. I do want to make sure that I wont blow the new out as soon as I put it in though. The emergency flashers work as well as the door open alarm and the dome light. turn signals, windshield wipers etc do not

hmm, anything when you turn the key forward, as in anything from the gauges/dash/radio?

hmm. nope there seems to be no change in what systems work whether the key is in the ignition and turned or not.

then start checking the fuses and wires for the switch. you wont have blinkers or wipers unless the ignition switch is sending power to the accessories

Thanks for all the help guys! It turned out it was the 120a alternator fuse. I missed it when I was going through the fuses in the engine bay. Delta B pointed out that all the systems I listed as not working went through the alternator fuse. Hopefully whatever caused it to blow was something the previous owner did when trying to take the head off the engine.

sweet! i wouldn't doubt that when they removed the thing, they didn't disconnect the battery (iv seen it happen dozens of times). now get an engine and do it to it!
