Has anyone ever "threaded" the exhaust over top of the suspension support rather than under it?
Given the damage to my exhaust on the last rally race, I am wondering if I have enough space (there seems to be) for a re-route.
I will have to pull off the suspension anyway for a thorough check and re-coating so I thought I would finish the exhaust at the same time.

A few guys did it back in the day. It would bang against the suspension for some, and for others it worked out fine.

Yeah, you need to be really careful when mounting otherwise it'll knock from suspension movement. You can probably get an equivalent size oval pipe to run in that small section to get as much clearance as possible.

This is how mine is ran, and I hate it....I need to get it changed, it smacks the suspension on every bump and will rub if I have 2 people in the back.
I have 3" pipes with a 1" notch cut out for the suspension (the shops "fix") and it still bangs.

I have a 2.5 in exhaust that runs through the control arms and it has never bumped or rubbed.
Inspection of the top of the pipe shows it may have hit once or twice, but I have never heard it and there are no dings or dents in the pipe, just a shiny spot.

What are the rules in your class concerning exhausts? Anyway you could just do a turn down or something similar before you reach the rear suspension?

Why not just run it below the center of the crossmember like most exhausts? A few 45 degree bends won't hurt flow enough to make a difference as long as they're mandrel bent.

exactly how mine is setup also, pretty much a straight through design with no huge bends in the pipe. but just like yakboyslim, the pipe only shows that it may have rubbed a little, just a tiny little shiny spot. the guy who made the piping said as long as im not doing any offroading i should be fine lol

I think that is the OP's problem he IS offroading.
If I were in your position (OP) I would either go under the center member, tight to the car. Or through the control arms, but close to the inner pivot point.
Like Shizuma said, if you can do a turn down do that. I know most rally classes require the exhaust to exit the rear of the vehicle.

just be like Shizuma and weld your exhaust in at the rear of the sideskirt area :gap:
i've always avoided looping any exhaust components through moving suspension because of fear that it would really screw things up badly if it started hitting things.

i did it several years ago, but i fabbed up 4 mounts for it. its solid, never hits anything. does kinda buzz though, st least above 4k. never did it with the exhaust routed normally. maybe ill change it back if i stop being so lazy

Rules require the exhaust to exit the rear of the vehicle so I don't have much choice
I need a bit of room around the center of the crossmember to allow a single point jack lift to allow the car to be placed on jack or pin stands.
