Well, I may be on the verge of pulling the trigger on a 2000 GT-S, but I was browsing craigslist and came across an '04 WRX STi w/76k miles for $10,000. KBB listing in $15,000.
The ad says "needs somebody work" so I have no idea what that might mean. I shot him an e-mail so hopefully he won't give me the run around on details.

GT-S stats:
$6500
2000
spectra blue
totally stock
77k miles

WRX STi
$10,000
2004
silver
no info on mods
77k miles

So here's the breakdown.

Pros
It's wicked fast
AWD
Typically reliable car
Good gas mileage (Will be DD)
Only 4 hours away
Blacked aftermarket rims
Updated body and headlights
It's an STi
It's 2/3rds the KBB
It's wicked fast
Could look good with a body kit

Cons
About $3k over my budget
"needs some body work" could mean just about anything...
I don't like silver
I don't like four doors
I don't like the spoiler
Probably needs new tires
No pictures of the interior
It seems too good to be true

I'd be sacrificing the body and paint style I love, for a 4 door car that's much faster? In the long term, I would do minimum body work on the Celica, so emphasis would be on increasing performance. But on the WRX STi I'd want to do all body work, since it's quick as-is.

So what do you guys think?

The gas mileage isn't great, but considering I drive to and from campus, it's not a deciding factor.
Compared to my auto GT, I would consider it wicked fast. If you didn't catch on, everything in the post is my opinion, except the prices, mileage, and paint color. Why? Because I will be driving it, not you.

Thank you for contributing absoluting nothing of value to my thread.

I would rather pick up an 05. 04 has the ugly interior and 5x100 bolt pattern. 05 has the 5x114.3. The gas mileage is horrible and filling up premium all the time is not cheap.

So your a college kid I'm assuming. You would need premium gas either way, and the wrx is already over your budget before having to fix anything up as stated.

Keep the dam GT, save your money and invest it.

i would be incredibly leery of a car that's so low in price in comparison to others of the same type. dont get me wrong, i love sti's and i cant wait to pick up my own in a few years but a car that's a good 15,000 less than all the others definitely is a ticking time bomb.

That price on the STi is WAY too low. The body damage must be big, and probably the carfax is everything but clean...

Buyer beware.

premium is a most 30 cents more per gallon.

I use about 10 gallons/week.

that's 520 gallons/year.

That's an extra $156 / year.

That's pretty cheap.

So what do you guys think? I think you should just hang on to the GT, save up while it gets you through college and then when you're set get a decent car.

Well the reason I'm looking for cars is my friend needs a cae for college. She wants to buy my GT, and I've always wanted a GTS. So far I'm looking at getting about 5200 for my GT. So Auto GT to manual GTS for roughly 1300 is a good deal I believe. I'll have the difference payed in a few months.

So, the WRX just caught my eye. The guy said about 800 in body work and apparently the AC is dead, too. Sounds like you'd be in the 15,000 range before it was in good condition again... But if anyone wants a project car search the mobile AL craigslist!

A new car should be the last thing on your mind when in college...

my friend needs a cae for college. She wants to buy my GTShe could also find her own GT, just sayin'. :gap:

Seriously though, even though it's your money, I'd still suggest to do the sensible thing and just keep the GT through college and don't incur extra expenses.

A 10k STi will needs tons of work and is probably salvaged.

Listen to others and buy a beater while in school.

reason why the sti is inferior to the EVO is in the motor.

subys don't have the iron block, closed deck, and forged internals of the 4g63. this is the proven FACT, and suby owners who say other wise are in denial.

look at how easy evos make power, more reliably, easier, and cheaper.

of course the popularity of suby over mitsu have blinded many, but popularity doesnt change that fact.

ironic how suby owners are fast to question mitsu's reliability, yet it is their inferior engine that cannot handle as much power and fail much easier if they even try to step into the power territory evo owners are making.

but lets fast forward to the EVO X, which is aluminum block now like the subys. they did this for weight savings. yet even still make power much easier/cheaper as been proven with mods $ vs $ mod vs mod.

and again this is all on a 2.0L compared to a 2.5L on the suby.

both are good cars, but that is the common misconception. if you plan to leave the car stock and like the extra grunt in the low end with the bigger displacement it may be a better choice. but know you will always lose to an EVO unless you have more mods or money into it.

We are not talking about evo's.

needs somebody work
If that is word for word then you are probably...no no no... definitly buying someones old pos that doesn't work well at all. In fact, it probably will work when he shows it to you and that's it.

Seriously, why the hell would you buy a turbo car that is clearly a pos. I mean CLEARLY! Craigslist ad's are all the same, the less information they contain, the more that's fvcked up with it, especially at 2/3's kbb price. It's a modded turbo car you say? Are you really this desperate to look like a dipsh!t in an STI?

You are coming from a GT so everything that has over 200 hp is going to look like gold to you, understandable. But don't buy something that clearly needs or will need work!!!! This is like me coming up to you and being like "hey want my house for 2/3 of it's value? Yea, it's on fire right now, but don't worry the roof was going to collapse in a few years anyways."

You didn't mention what year it was either, so nevermind the fact that the seller is hiding the facts, better make sure it isn't one of the one's with a glass transmission.

Don't be a dumbass, I'm not going to say don't get a new car in college, well, because I did. But think of how much beer that could buy?

Also, to reiterate, the ad is hiding a lot. I can't wait to see the people that come on and go "dude, my friends STI is rated for 600+ hp and never once broke down", I don't doubt that STI's can be reliable cars, but I do doubt that the one's you find on craigslist at that price are.

Full scholarship

I'd love to wait till I'm out of college, but I've been looking for a <100k mile spectra blue GT-S within 300 miles for about a year now. For some reason it's very difficult to find them in the southeast. I'm not 100% buying ANYTHING, but the idea is on the table.

Woah, Dasher17, chill man. I understand, he e-mailed me back and there's no way I'd buy it now.

Exact e-mail response:

IT NEEDS ABOUT $800 WORTH OF BODY WORK BOTH PASSENGER SIDE DOORS AND AN A/C BELT. RUNS OUT SUPER NICE!! CALL ME: ADAM

So yeah, I think automaton has it pretty accurately! I mean, what the hell is that even suppose to mean? It needs $800 body work ON the passenger doors? It needs $800 of body work AND 2 passenger doors? He's too cheap to buy a keyboard with a working caps lock key?
BUT IT RUNS OUT SUPER NICE!! Well thank GOD for that! :blah:
