Hey all. My name is Johann and I have a pretty big passion for working on cars. I have had quite a few fun and interesting projects over the years working on Subarus, EVOs, and AE86 Corollas but one project in particular has brought me here to show off. I guess I’ll start with some history. I mainly work on Subaru’s My first Subaru was a 97 Legacy GT Auto and it was one of the funest cars I ever had. I then moved into a 99 Impreza RS Auto where I got the mod bug. Did a bung of mods to that learned a lot. Traded it in for a 2004 WRX Wagon (My 1st manual) and got to work. I was going to school for Autobody tech so I started with the Engine and once I was farther along started working on the exterior and paint. When it was at the top of its game it sported a custom widebody kit, full 6-speed swap, and 537whp. I took it to many shows and it was a blast.

During the same time as I was progressing this car I worked on a friends car on the side for extra cash (to fund the wagon) It started as a stock 2002 WRX Auto with carbon wing risers, rice lights, and an Ebay strut bar. Over the course of the last 5 years I changed almost every part out to make a one of a kind custom show/ race car. Just a few little things are left and this project will come to a close.

Also around this time I got my first hand at working on a Toyota. The member sexktten which some of you might remember a few years back. I put an APR widebody kit on with custom paint and did a few custom additions like shaved rear windows. While it was running she was an avid member on these forums.

Then it was my 2nd chance to play with a Toyota. I bought an 87 AE86 Hatch Corolla and it was a great fun car. Shortly after I bought it the engine blew up so while it was being rebuilt I tried my hand at some custom all metal fab. I 2 pairs of 03 WRX front fenders and cut the flares off to make my own custom wide body. Painted the car a nice green color and then fitted the new engine with some weber side draft carbs. Fine for a while but then I found out the engine was over bored so it was getting massive amounts of blow by.

While then engine in the AE86 was slowly dying I worked on a friends car and tried my had at some custom engine fabrication. He had a 2002 RS with a built STi block installed and wanted a turbo kit for it. He handed me a turbo, a wastegate, and in intercooler and told me to have at it. Had a tone of fun and gained a lot of knowledge working on it and it came out great. A few months after the car was returned to him we found out that the engine they had installed was not in STi block, but a stock N/A block bored to 100mm. Needless to say it was being tuned for power it was never able to handle and it soon after seized. The turbokit however worked flawlessly and it will be finding its way into another Subaru I am currently working on soon.

After that it was another Subaru. This time, a 2002 WRX that lost a fight with a tree and got its front end snuffed. Insurance cut him a nice check and we proceeded to go with an APR widebody for an 04 WRX. I took out the stock damaged metal and welded in the pieces for the new front and long with that a few custom mods.

Shortly after the car was finished I was letting him make payments on my labor and he lost his job. Unable to pay me I offered to take an SR20DET swap with parts for a second AE86 I bought. I bought it because it came with 2 motors so I could fix both cars and sell one of them to recoup some the money for the 2nd one. I started working on my first fully custom motor swap and pulled out all the stops. Custom v-mount, custom wiring harness and fuse box, custom body work and suspension was going to make it a track car but upon firing the motor I found that one of the bears was totally shock and after 2 mins of running it seized. Got a new block from the engine’s importer but at this point was fed up with work on AE86s and I sold both projects off.

Then it was my 1st chance to work on a Mitsubishi. Erin (Sextten’s) new car. We got a sponsor from ETS and ramped the performance up to 403whp. Custom paint and a custom all metal duckbill trunk spoiler for the exterior. Volks wheels and a custom system and it was a nice clean rendition of the car. We were one of the first to start modding it heavily and used it to prototype the 2pc rotors that Girodisc (the place I work for) make. The finally production rotors are now on race call all over the world and on the well known Ryan Gates Blue AMS Time Attack EVO X

After I lost my Wagon due to a strategically placed deer back in 2008 I had every intention of rebuilding it and bought many parts to re-do the project. I stripped all the parts out of the wagon before insurance could take it and replaced them with the parts from my roommate forester. I then bought a used 2003 WRX wagon and pulled all the work parts from it to put into the Forester along with parts from the wagon I was going to replace and then left the new Wagon as a shell. Some time went by and I decided that the cost wasn’t worth rebuilding the car all over again so I sold many or the parts off as well as the shell and kept others for future projects.
From there I did some smaller projects. My custom all metal widebody 99 Legacy GT with 89 Honda Accord Fender Flairs, Custom front and rear bumpers and A full Ver STi RA 6-speed tranny swap w/ Brembo Brakes from the Wagon

However in the background of all these projects where was one project that was so insane it took almost 4 years to finally get to this point. There was some time when it was put off to the side to work on other things but this time last year it was finally time to get going on this thing and finish it for good. Many of you that remember Sexktten’s Celica remember that it was torn down and stripped. Almost all the parts from it were sold off and it was believed to have been lost forever. However that was not the case. The car is still alive and it is the reason I am posting here now. This build is the craziest thing I have ever done and it will probably be for a very long time. The time and energy into this project are just staggering and now that it’s finally close for me to be giving this car back I can post up. Pease note that the posts from this are past dated because if I had been posting from the start many of you would have been very confused at to my presents on this forum. I was not allowed to divulge the true identity of this car until just recently so now that it’s almost finished you guys get to see what all the Subaru guys have been gawking at for the last year. They didn’t know this was a Celica until just recently to that give you an idea of what’s going on here.
Okay let’s get started….
It started almost 4 years ago as an idea to get more HP out of the Celica’s original motor. Weighing the options we found at the time that for the money the hp potential of this car was very weak. We had discussed motor swaps but I didn’t have much experience with anything other then Subaru. She then asked me what it would take to get a Subaru engine into a Celica and I said it would require everything to be swapped over. The car would have to be converted to AWD and you would basically need to take the entire underside of an STi and put it into the Celica so the drivetrain could be installed without requiring extensive modifications and fabrication work. The next day I took some preliminary easements of the Celica and wagon and it all looked great. She found a wreaked 04 STi and bought it. We took both cars to a friends shop and I began the most ambitious project I could have ever thought of.
We started by Erin (Sexktten) stripping the Celica on a lift to a bare shell and I marked where I would remove and keep the original metal. Then her and I stripped the STi to the same state. It was hit high in the rear passenger door so all the metal I needed was relatively un-molested. I then surgically took the STi’s unibody apart at the spot welds till it was no more then the basic chassis. Frame rails, strut towers, firewall, floor pan etc... Then it was time to cut into a perfectly good Celica. I was so nervous that week I could have died. I removed the entire bottom from the Celica till it was just a shell and left the rocker panels in place for structural integrity. I trimmed the STi’s rocker panels in half and then trimmed the floor to the center of the floor rails. Once all the metal was trimmed and ready to be installed I set it STi’s floor bits on the ground and lowered the Celica down onto it. I tack the STi’s underside to the car and it was done. It worked out great. The Celica now had Subaru metal from the airbag sensors to the end of the tranny tunnel including the front strut towers and fire trimmed just below the cowl. Then the rear went in a few inches back (Celica has a 3” longer wheel base) and so it then got the STis rear rails from the rear crossbrace to the bumper beam including the rear strut towers.
I’d like to start off by saying that I would prefer if the haters would please reframe from trying to fill this tread with un-wanted or need comments of “you ruined a Subaru” and “ that Celica looks riced out” BS. I have worked very hard on this car and you’re entitled to your opinion but constructive criticism only. This is a serious thread and it doesn’t need to be filled with your useless slander as you troll through this forums and post unconstructive comments of hate that take 1% of your brain to create. If you want to post your questions or criticism please use your intelligence and think about an appropriate response.
So after almost a year I give to you the Toyota Celaru STi. What was once a 1.8L FWD Toyota with an HP potential of about 300whp, is now a 2.7L sleeved AWD w/ DCCD Toyotabaru with 650whp and potential for over 800whp with just a new turbo, injectors, and tuning. That FX86 has nothing on this thing…. And no this is not a Stock bodied Celica it has an APR GT300 Widebody on it. It has a custom hood, headlights, and hatch that I made all from metal as well as removed the rear side windows because this car has been converted to a 2-seater.

Let’s start with the Chassis.
I started by stripping all the stock undercoating off and stitch welded the entire chassis. I know many members feel that this is un-necessary but I did it for added rigidity and it made it to I could shave some weight off the chasses by getting rid of most of the un-needed supports and mounting points so in the end I shaved a good 100lbs off the car. Coated the underside in POR15 and then applied 2 coats of hard rubberized undercoating to keep it light but not defining. Here are a few pics of the end result. The Front frame rails are still cut short so I can make a custom core support for the Intercooler and radiator so we will get to that later. I also took all the crossmembers and seam welded and boxed in all the weak points to help with the all the HP this thing is going to make and then POR15ed those as well.

Now that the Chassis is mostly finished we can start assemble of the mountain of parts that’s going to be going into it.
For those that know me, all my cars may be “flashy” or “ricey” or whatever but they were all fast. My old wagon was packing 545whp daily driven and this car is no exception. From a gracious sponsorship from Brian Crower we attained the entire top level product line for this motor.
2.7L Stroker Kit 8:4:1 Compression
Darton Sleaves
1mm Oversized Intake/ Exhaust Valves
Ti Springs/ Retainers
Stage 3 Race Cams
To compliment these parts we added all the best supporting mods…
ARP Crankcase Bolt Kit
ARP Headstud Kit
Cosworth Oil Baffle Plate
Cosworth High Volume Oil Pan
Cosworth Blueprinted High Volume Oil Pump
Cosworth Timing Belt Guide
Cosworth Head Gaskets
Greddy Timing Belt
Machine work was done by Dan Benson who’s very well known for his sleaving. He bored, and balanced the entire rotating assy for 9000 rpm rev limit which is great for a 2.7L. Also fully Ported the heads with a like 20 angle Valve Job.
After the Block came it was given to the pros at PIA for assembly. They did a great job putting the long block together for us and it will be returning for Tim @ Surgeline Tuning to dial it in on the dyno.
So now on to the supporting mods. Currently we only have enough fuel and a turbo to make 650ish whp so when I get more funds will put the big boy turbo (or twin!?!) in and punch out the target goal of 850whp. We are going to run Direct port Meth injection using the AUX Injector ports in some APS tumbler deletes and a direct port nitrous kit in the intake manifold for extra fuel so we might be able to squeeze more out.
So far this is what we have (many of these parts are from the old Wagon):

For starters I coated the engine in a nice flat black engine coating to give it a different look. I want to showcase the performance parts installed on top it. I am starting with wiring and fuel.
http://i565.photobucket.com/albums/ss98/Project_Stiletto/003a.jpg
Installed the tumblers, injectors and taped the aux ports for the water/meth nozzles. Now its time to hard-line fun! I decided to go hardlines because I can keep things much tight and better secured. Got all the Russell fittings and hose at TH Motorsports and the prices were great. A+ to TH for Hooking me up! Pics of the finished fuel system on Friday!

Well I worked late into the night and got the hardlines done a day early. Used a 10an to 2 8an Y block mounted to the engine and ran 8an or 1/2" hardline through the Aeromotive rails to the Aeromotive Regulator where I am running a 6an return. I had to grind down the APS Tumbers to fit the giant RC injectors but I mad it work and when the rails needed spacers to fit them so its pretty cramped.
Here are the Hardlines, everything came out really nice and its going to make for a nice sturdy point to attach my wiring too. The rearward line looks goofy in the pics but it drops down and then s curves though the blocks breather lines. I have made sure to clear all the ports I need and if you look where the lines enter and exit its all over the tranny. Everything that comes off the engine will come off over the tranny and there will be nothing in the engine bay but engine, intercooler pipes and a monster turbo.
http://i565.photobucket.com/albums/ss98/Project_Stiletto/004a.jpg
I had an old Stock A/C Pump to check clearence on the forward drivers side line but I have one of the new smaller 09 WRX A/C pumps coming so it should fit nicely. Got the stock wiring harness de-loomed so I can set it in and move everything around so it goes where it should always have gone. I'll have pics of those Monday. The Turbo was pre-installed to check clearance but I took it back off to do the wiring and I still need gaskets so I'll have pics of the turbo back on soon.

On on with the wiring. De-loomed the harness and re-routed it a little. Cut out all the emotions bull**** and now we have a much leaner better setup. I am running all the connections over the tranny to keep the engine bay as clean as possible and it will help with servicing.
http://i565.photobucket.com/albums/ss98/Project_Stiletto/005b.jpg
Now we’ll start slapping on the header and the TURBO!!!!!! I added some more welds to the Header to hopefully hold the boost and the heat better. Put the up-pipe on and modified the stock bracket to be sturdier so it can hold that monster turbo up. Lightly installed the Tial gate and dump tube and now turbo time. Turbo XS up-pipe is nice because it’s built to house the 44mm Tial gate and as I said before I modified the upper piece to better suit the build. If it shows as a weak point I’ll redo it to be all one piece but the weld on it are nice and the wall thickness is good. The DP had a weird 3 bolt flange on it and since I moved the up-pipe it’s worthless so I am going to make a new one. I won’t weld it ill I get the tranny attached to the block and mount the car so I can get proper fitment. Also I wanted to start from scratch because my whole exhaust will be V-Bands!!!

update time WOOOOOO!
I have decided it would be easier if I assembled the engine and tranny to their crossmembers on the floor and then lower the car onto them so everything gets put in, in one fowl swoop. So now its time to take the engine off its stand and bolt it to the tranny but before the Exedy triple disc much go on.

And finally the tranny (also painted black w/ engine coating)
http://i565.photobucket.com/albums/ss98/Project_Stiletto/011a.jpg
Now comes the fun part lowering the body on the drive train. I pre-set the crossmembers before bolting the engine to them. All we have to do is slowly lower the car on the crossmembers start all the bolts lift it up a smidge and gun them home. Everything is ready to install the engine but before I bolt it up I did a few more things now that I could like up the engine with the holes in the firewall so I did the breather lines and installed the rails and wiring harness for good.
http://i565.photobucket.com/albums/ss98/Project_Stiletto/023a.jpg
So the next step is to get it in and start on the exhaust and fab up my new core support. Very huge milestone to finally have the einge back in the car since test fitting a year ago. I really had some doubts that I would get to this point but here we are. Everybody have a beer tonight and celebrate with me!

Okay after a long awaited time I finally have no more unforeseen inconveniences and I finally got to make some real progress this weekend.
I started with mounting the intercooler core. I decided that it would be easier to mount the bumper and then set the intercooler to the bumper instead of trimming the bumper to fit the intercooler. I have a perfect fit and the intercooler is exactly the right side for the opening. Fabed up a temporary core support so I could fab the intercooler pipes and locate the radiator. Once everything is mounted I will redo the core support into the final piece I want and then paint it.
As you can see the intake manifold has not been reversed and its because I wanted to keep A/C in the car for the long journeys to CA or where we end up taking it. It has plenty of power to run it so why not. Just because its a full blown racecar doesn't mean it can't be comfortable. :ritz:
There are 2 pipes, solid so there is less chance of failure and they are made from SS steal for added strength. 2.5" from the turbo outlet all the way to the throttle body and the pipes are pretty short even for not reversing the mani. The key was not having to run around the stock metal. I just ran the pipes where they would flow best and I'll build the sheet metal around it. The pipes are just tacked for now until the core support is finished and I can have them TIG welded.
Anywho sorry about the wait again but updates should be more regular now that I actually have time to work. I'll be finishing up the core support this week and then finishing up the exhaust this weekend. Then its off to wiring and suspension. I should be getting around to ordering the tire for it in a couple weeks to soon it will come off the lift and sit on its own weight.

Hey all pics as promised. We’ll start with the wiring. First is the pic of the main engine and bulkhead harness modified and layed out. As you can see only the things that need to be ran forward like rad fans, headlights, blinkers ABS sensor wires etc… Everything else I re-wired and extended to run back behind the front seats such as the ABS pump, Fusebox, Washer Fluid tank etc…
All of the headlights rad wiring will be running though the drivers side frame rail and everything else will be running on top of the tranny by the pitch mount making the engine very easy to disconnect and remove and also making for a very throe wire tuck.

Pic of the interior with some of the basics installed. There will be some custom modification here for sure to both the Dash bar and some of the H-VAC.

Here is the wiring in the engine bay. As you can see its barely visible and this is complete minus the power wire from the alternator to the fuse box. All of the wiring in the engine bay is done, the engine could actually fire if the fuel pump was wired and installed. I’ll have to swap a few pigs tails around for the headlights and such and just finish the front core support and the sheet metal in the engine bay and I can write that off too.

And finally some of the fun stuff! EXHAUST!!!! I had a lot of fun making this. I had a different idea when I ordered the pipe for this but later realized that it was going to mount to low so I had to change up a but and when with a new 350z/ GTR/ Genesis setup. I know I know it’s dual!!! This turbo setup was to be temp or well modified to run twin turbos in its final form so I opted to make it dual now so I wouldn’t have to re-engineer the entire system again. I should be able to use the Up-pipe and Down-pipe fromt his set up and then just remove the Y and add the same thing on the other side with some modifications but its just less work for me down the line. It will probably never get twin turboed but just in case it can. Should sound pretty sick. Its 3” all the way back!
This is all just fab pics but I’ll have the V-Bands put in and get pics of it all finish welded and grinded this weekend. The Exhaust side are actually only off by 2" from left to right so its almost equal length. Doesn't look like it but the to hard bends in the driver side by the muffler make up for the couple bends in the middle of the passengers side.

Hey all, got some good updates from this last week. I have been working 3-4 hours a night during the week to help speed this project up and get it done before my B-day Aug 17th so expect things to come together quickly.
Over the week I buttoned up all the suspension. I had to make a few minor altercations to get some parts to fit a little better and do what I wanted. Set the coilovers in a good place so they can settle without any issues. Set the toe, camber, and caster of all the wheels to fit the body. Set the sway bars and tightened it all up. Finished painting the last suspension bits and install a Perrin Crossmember brace for added ridgedness.
Note* some of these pics are out of sequence just to make things easier for the posts.
http://i565.photobucket.com/albums/ss98/Project_Stiletto/013a.jpg
Next was to finish up and paint the core support so I could install the intercooler, radiator, and ac condenser for good. I have not finished the aprons because I am waiting for some metal to come in so I’ll weld those in and then paint them to finish the engine bay off for good. It’s just e-coating because it’s going to be painted body color at a later time. I used the stock bumper beam and tied with the intercooler is should make for a good 5-15mph protection of the engine but with the car being seam welded its obvious that 4pts will be worn all the time. It’s not a death trap but with all race cars street driving will need added awareness. The car does have a full 6pt cage with intrusion beams. I mounted the intercooler at an angle to fit the bumper perfectly which allowed me to fit the radiator partially under the upper support piece giving the engine bay a cleaner look and allowing better access to the pulleys and cams covers.

Okay, with that out of the way we can continue… Now that the Intercooler was installed for good I could finally decide on a place to mount the BOVs. It works great with the hood I made and they are mounted pretty symmetrically so I think it compliments the engine well.
http://i565.photobucket.com/albums/ss98/Project_Stiletto/015a.jpg
You can see how well the intercooler fits with the bumper since I had free range to mount the intercooler where I wanted to instead of trying to fit the bumper to the intercooler by trimming it. Here’s a pic of it with the hood on it. You can see the little vents in the front where the BOVs are mounted under. Pretty unassuming I’d say. Well by unassuming I mean it looks like a widebody Celica with a FMIC and not a Toyotabaru death machine.
http://i565.photobucket.com/albums/ss98/Project_Stiletto/015b.jpg
http://i565.photobucket.com/albums/ss98/Project_Stiletto/015c.jpg
Next it was finally time to start doing the interior. My job is to get the car running and driving so it can be giving a break in map for the engine and to make sure all the suspension is working before it heads off to paint and a final tune. So for the interior I just have to make sure the Subaru Harness, heater core, and blower motor tuck behind the stock Celica dash. It will have the door cards dash and center consul. I’ll also be installing the seats, roll cage and covering up the rear floor but it will be a stripped interior for now until she has whoever finishes putting it in. To start I had to cut a couple pieces off the original STi dash beam.
http://i565.photobucket.com/albums/ss98/Project_Stiletto/028a.jpg
Tacked the steering column to the Celica’s dash brace. I’ll have to alter the Agency Power Short Shifter shifter a little but to locate it in the center of the Celica’s original spot. Also modified the e-brake cable bracket so I could use the Celica E-brake to work with the Subaru hubs.

And finally to end my weekend on a good note I set the car down on its own weight in over a year to check the stance. Its tucking 19x10.5 +38 on 265/35/19 tires with room to spare and minimal camber settings.
http://i565.photobucket.com/albums/ss98/Project_Stiletto/030a.jpg
http://i565.photobucket.com/albums/ss98/Project_Stiletto/030b.jpg
I’ll be working all week to finish integrating some Celica wiring into the Subaru harness. Little things like doors, headlights, taillights, HVAC controls, Sunroof etc… Few more parts are coming in so I can finish off the engine bay and start checking operations. Then I need to make a floor for the rear from aluminum sheeting and finished installing the fuel system. Have to drop the exhaust to finish welding the top and then run all the vacuum lines. Only thing that might keep this from rolling this out by the 17th is brake calipers. My buddy still needs to paint them so I might be waiting on him before I can install them and check the brakes for leaks.

I read every single post. Amazing.. You know what's actually funny? I was talking to one of my sti friends last week about something like this, if it was possibile and now a week later I find a thread and it has been done.
Just out of curiosity. How much money would one, like myself need for you to create another project like this. If I can aslso scrummage another wrecked doner sti for parts?
This project with the celica sti is just absolutetly amazing...mind boggling.
Great job, keep up the good work.
I wounder if the celica is going to get the same paint or something different.
Also while the interior was out, should have got it painted black....black interior is way way way way 100000xxxx better than that nasty grey color.
Looking for to reading every single post about the project you make.

There is no way someone could afford to pay him to do the work to this car. He has been working on her on and off for 4 years with thousands of hours into her. Not to mention the amount of money in parts and engine labor have been outragous. It cost me 13K just for the wrecked STi alone. This car truely will be one of a kind, she car will be his legacy....

Hey all. My Legacy needed some love this weekend before the auto X and I did do some work on the Celaru this weekend but nothing really to take pics off.
My Legacy had a bad a ****ty stock steering rack in it, a vacuum leak in the manifold, and one of the exhaust hangers broke off.
So I installed a new crossmember with a quick 05 STi rack, Whiteline Steering Bushings, Whiteline Roll Center Adjusters, Perrin PSRS. Then I fixed the exhaust. I found that I had to pull the Manifold to replace the gaskets so while I did that I decided to jazz it up a little. Striped the engine bay down and painted it. Relocated the Fuse box to the fender and the battery to the trunk. Painted the Intake manifold, valve covers, camber plates and strut bar ends this minty metallic green color. Painted the engine block and various parts black. Tucked the engine and ran one of the bay harnesses in the cowl so now it look much cleaner. Not to bad for a semi lazy weekend.
This week I plan to have the
P/S and radiator overflow tank installed
Fans mounted
Wiring harness in
Fuel Pump assy installed
Exhaust pulled and finish welded
Intercooler pipes done and in for good E
Engine bay sheet metal finished
Battery, Fuse Box, Washer Tank Installed
Roll Cage In
Seats Mounted (Maybe)
The idea for the Celaru was thought up ourselves. I had no idea that this has been done before as I have never seen any other info on it. I would love to see any info you have of these other cars.
Update pics soon. See you guys got a huge helping all at once where as the Subaru guys got this in installments over the course of a year.

girodisc what shop are you talking those cars to where?
I worked on all these cars in ether my garage or the shop at the house I am at now. During the day I work for Girodisc selling brake parts but in my off hours and weekends I work at home on these projects.
All of these fabrication skill yous speak of are pretty much self taught. I went to BTC (Bellingham Technical College) for autobody but took a few extra quarters to do a couple projects. I love welding but I only learned to MIG at school. The custom stuff was me just biting the bullet and hoping my ideas worked. SO far I have been pretty lucky. I mean I have to re-do stuff now and again but I have yet to ruin a car or cause myself a large $$ mistake.... The motor stuff was just from me getting a car that I could play with and doing it myself. I don't build engines (internals) but I have a good enough understanding of turbos and various other parts that I believe I can make efficient designs. Everything building up to this car I had at least one car to try it out on (except for the welding of 2 cars together) but yeah. It you have tool, a welder, and time, eventually you too could make your own celaru...

Wow really? I have never seen any posts online of this project that you are talking about.... He took and STi motor and fully built it and cut the celica in half to incorporate the subaru drivetrain and motor? I would love to see pictures of this build.
Well in either case the project was imagined because I wanted more power and I wanted the beautiful bodylines of the celica... After doing alot of research I realized that if i wanted more power I had to get rid of the Celica motor. Johann has worked on Subarus sense his first car. So i thought what the hell I know Subaru can handle the power I want, I know how they handle I might as well through the beautiful sound of the boxer into the celica. Asked Johann if he could do it.. he said why not so I bought a wrecked STi before I could think how much this would cost and project Celaru started.

When I was working at work one they did some tuning on a Martix with a hydra. Those are the same motors aren't they. Hydras are universal you just need the right harness.
Yes I know there are many Celicas with 500 hp but imo its pointless.
1. It costs so much money to get there. (i know that swap was more but way more worth it)
2. The Celica is FWD so all the power is pointless unless your already at speed
3. The Subaru engine will make way more torque and will be yawning at 650whp

3. The Subaru engine will make way more torque and will be yawning at 650whp

he tuned mine n/a but now I am installing a turbo so I need a tune again.
I used Dominic when he didnt have his shop that was several years ago.
severl years ago I think I was the only one with hydra and 2zz but he didnt quite have a good time tuning it.
I ended up tuning myself and with some help of other corolla/matrix owners withe the same mods and hydra just mainly street tuning it.
and then I went to DriftOffice to see where I was at. with stock vs Hydra here is my last dyno sheet from them.

Worked on finishing up a bunch of stuff. Exhaust, intercooler pipes, mounting reservoirs and stuff. Engine is kinda taken back apart but the plus is that when the parts are re-installed Wed they will be installed for good. Car is coming off the lift this weekend most likely so I can finish up the interior so long as I can get the rear floor finished up by then.

When I read the thread title I thought this was going to be a ricer body kit fab mod that someone did to a celica; I'm glad to see I was wrong. I've self-learned a lot of things from tuning to welding but this is just a whole level beyond what I'd attempt. All I can say is wow, amazing work! I'm curious to see how this will run and how much this will end up costing.

I emailed Phil at element tuning he said he will be in town late September. he charges $300hr and said most water/meth setups are 3hr. Thats a lot of money. what shop does he use? I hope $300hr includes shop fees etc....
Girodisc

I don't think it does. But Phil is very good at what he does. When he tuned my wagon it was fast and the tune was great. But I wouldn't be surprised if the 300 was for a road tune and if it was on the dyno I doubt it includes the dyno setup etc... Phil is in high demand so he can charge that price because somebody will always pay.
I would call Dom and at least talk to him if your only going for alterations Dom would be way cheaper and best of all if there is a problem he is still here. Phil is great but if there are problems its pain because he leaves and you can't just take it to him to look at the map etc...

Picked up the Calipers yesterday so those will go in tonight. Pretty much finished the Firewall except for the fuel lines. Brakes tonight. I'll try to get the fuel lines and stuff in by the end of the week. Auto X Sat so and Sunday I need to install a system in a car to make some monies. We getting there. The earlier year model wrx ecu's have almost all the same features of a stand alone... 2 step, launch control, etc etc. My buddies 600whp wrx is running the stock ecu and he works for the best subaru tuner in the country, who has zero objections to using the stock ecu.

I had these exact type questions. Although this looks and IS amazing, in the back of my mind I was wondering about what engineering work went into this to be sure the car was setup for its intended purpose. (which is???)
In his first post he mentioned he went to school for autobody tech. So I believe he considered these stuff.
Umm,, unless I'm grossly wrong, I don't think a degree/certificate in autobody tech would give you the working knowledge to calculate and design a car or modify one car for another application. NOT SAYING anything wrong with going to school for autobody tech, wish I could do that, but guys spend years becomming an automive engineer to do this.

The under side of the car is all Subaru so all the stock STi suspension geometry is the same. The only difference is the wheelbase of the Celaru is 3" longer then an STi so its more like Legacy I guess. Alignment will be needed for sure but its very close to and I made sure get all the adjustable control arms and lateral links as well as fully adjustable suspension to dial in the wheels alignment. It’s not like its going to crab walk down the street.
Sorry for the long absence. Its been a very long road many many set backs and re-designs on parts so I could get all of it to fit and fit correctly have taken up much of my time. I knew I was going to have to redo a few things when your making everything from scratch and with almost all my projects I greatly underestimated the amount of set backs and time delays that were going to occur. Also I had my own projects I needed to attend to from time to time so once in a while this would get put no the back burner while I was working on my car to get it ready for Auto X or a couple quick projects to make a couple bucks on the side. Anyways progress since my last post.
Exhaust is done and finish welded.
The Down-Pipe is done and finish welded
Intercooler pipes are done and finish welded
Wiring integration into the dash and doors are done
Suspension and drivetrain is done (Except for the driveshaft)
Brakes, Brake Lines, and E-Brake are done (Just waiting for fluid and a pressure test)
Front Core Support is done and finish welded
P/S Rez Mounted and finished
Radiator Overflow Mounted and finished
Oil/ Water Separator Mounted and finished
Unfortunately because I was mainly just finish welding, installing little things that were mainly trying to be hidden it doesn't look like much since the last pics I posted which is why I haven't been posting. But I finally have some new fab work worth posting.
Fuel Pump Assy and rear floor I just finished up the fab work on. I had to make and mount a crush proof tunnel to run the fuel lines under the car so I make this trick tunnel that runs hard line inside of it but is easy to service and replace the lines if need be.
All I have for now is a crappy cell phone pic but I’ll be taking some new ones tonight with the Cannon of the brakes, fuel pump assy and fuel tunnel.
http://i565.photobucket.com/albums/ss98/Project_Stiletto/Photo0092.jpg
Got the Roll cage pre-installed and found that the rear bars need to be cut off and new ones made so I’ll be starting that tonight after I finished welding and sealing up the rear floor for good so I can paint it.
As far as the list of things that are left:
Wire in the Relay for the Fuel Pumps
Re-do the rear Bars on the Roll Cage
Install the Battery and mount the Fuse Box
Install the Dash and Roll cage for good
Weld in the Seat Brackets and install the Seats and Harnesses
Run the Vacuum Lines
Install the Rad Fans
Install the ECU, Wideband, and EBC
Bleed the Brakes
Check Fuel System for leaks
Put the wheels on
Put the doors back on and run a couple wires
Install the bumper and hood for the last time.
Swap the Headlight and Taillight Wires
Watch it get put on to a trailer and leave...
So not much left. All the big fabrication is done now it’s just the tidy work to clean and finish everything all up. It’s been over a year since I started the main fabrication on this car after finishing the body and I can tell you that’s its felt like more then a year. Constant changes and ideas, stress, injuries, sleepless nights thinking of ways to fix or improve things, waiting for parts, hundreds of cutting wheels, thousands of feet of welding wire, 8hr days after work, 12hr days on Sat and Sun. Wanting to give up so many times I can’t even count. So many hours of my life put into this thing. I am ready to be done and on to new things. I have never worked on a car for this long nor done this much to it and I probably never will again. Completing this car will mark and end to probably the best car I have ever worked on and some well deserved closure. Every hour I put into it is an hour closer to being done and it’s very nice to be able to list off what needs to be finished in less then 15 lines. That list was 8 pages when I started….
Well, I should have more pics as I mark things off over the next week or two (I hope). Trying very hard to stay on track and get this thing gone by the 11th or 12th so I can finish a few things I have been putting off before the end of the year. Its getting cold outside and I work slower in the cold. I hope to mark something off my list every couple days during the week and maybe get a couple knocked off on the weekends, but I still have to balance having a life and this car and my actual life is more important to me so me so I just have to take it one day at a time.

you are the new braveheart! Hope you'll achieve your target and be satisfied.
Will this car even handle better vs. a normal STi? It's lower, lighter, better aerodynamics and wider wheelbase...
Girodisc
11-29-2010, 12:04 PM
I believe it till drive circles around an STi.
Its lighter, by about 550lbs maybe more I won't know till it gets weighed when its done
Its longer, Wheels base is 3" longer so it should be a bit more stable in the corner
Its wider, by about 65mm on ether side as well as running the 265 all around which is possible on an STi but not functional unless your running at least 40mm flares. This car has room to run up to a 315 wide tire front and rear if it wanted.
Almost every part has been replaced with something better and what hasn't been replace has been modified to work the best it can. All the bushings and mounts are new, all the performance parts are designed to work well together and be a bit more then what the car needs to attain its power goals. Everything has been designed and installed in a way to make it easy to service and maintain. What could be taken out was, what could be simplified was, what could be strengthened was.
I understand many people have their doubts when looking at a project likethis with all the technical speculation they think that know about but when it all boils down to is.
This is a Subau chassis with the body of a Celica. It was done that way to not only maintain the suspension geometry of a proven chassis but also so that it would not require any "custom and one off parts" All the drivetrain parts are for a Subaru, all the suspension components are for a Subaru, all the engine performance is for a Subaru. Yes there are many custom pieces to this car true but its only to facilitate the power goals or the usable space of the car. Exhaust, intercooler pipes, turbo kit, fuel components are all custom but can all be assembled in any orientation. Most other custom work was done just to mount and locate parts. Yes there are more efficient ways then others and I believe after much research and countless designs and redesigns I have made a good design choices.
Yes I don't have an engineering degree, I am just a certified auto body tech. I was not certified to work on 80% of this car but that doesn't mean I don't know what I am doing. I have tried many new things working on this car. Brake lines, fuel hard lines, new types of fabrication but after doing the research on what would work best I got the parts and did it. Some people read this thread and assume that I am some genius that know everything about cars but the truth of the matter is that this car was started as an idea because we "at the time" wanted more power but I was only good at working on Subarus. I had no idea how to weld to cars together but I knew (from Autobody) was was structural and what wasn't so that I would sacrifice the structural integrity of ether chassis. Everything I didn't know how to do I learned about and perfected before applying them to the Celaru.
For those that question the engineering... The chassis is relatively un-molested, the wiring was installed as a Subaru harness with only pigtail modifications to integrate with a few Celica components (headlights, taillights, windows, mirrors, sun roof etc...) so I lift the Engineering that the original designers spent millions of dollars to design it. It was never my goal to redesign a car from scratch I don't have the know how for that so I use as much of the stock stuff as I could to save time, money, and because I already knew it worked and was good enough.
I guess with any project as big as this there are always skeptics on whether or not something is going to work or not. That's the reason way I waited to long to post this when it was almost done because I didn't want an internet expert to tell me if something was going to work or not because in almost every case they don't actually know. I guess it takes a different kind of person to pull the trigger and believe their ideas are going to work. I have never had a problem cutting into a perfectly good car to try something new...

Yeah ran in to a few problems.... Figures. Ran out of welding gas and the owner of another project I'll be starting after this decided to come over and yap my ear off...
But I managed to get about 85% of the floor welded and in before the gas ran out. Got the underside of the front part painted so I could put the 2 helper pumps back in the finish the underside fuel lines. I'll finish and paint the rear and top of the floor tonight so I can put the rest of the fuel system in for good and test it for leaks. Once the welder gas ran out I busied myself with designing and cutting all the pieces to make the seat mounts, cut the cage to get the new rear bars ready to weld in. Mounted the rear cage plates to the strut towers. Also mounted all the grounds and extra bits of the dash harness and got the dash installed for the last time. Secured the extended ABS and fuse box wires to the floor. Also got the shifter in working like a charm.
All be working almost every night this week to get something finished off the list so I'll have lots of pics of finish bits as they are done. Once the car is off the lift and rolls forward I'll put all the exterior parts back on. Some little wiring and then it will be ready to go. I am hoping to have it ready to leave by the end of the week but we will see what else decides to slow me down and hinder my progress. This project may be cool but with how much its backing me up on other things and for what I am getting out of it not worth it at all.
I took some pics of the underside of the floor and the brakes but my camera was dying so I'll have those up tomorrow I hope.

She has been handling the expenses and I am getting the lift it is resting on for the work. Her mom bought her GSXR600 that was wreaked and its been sitting at my place for almost a year. I think they should give that to me as well but I doubt I'll get it. They aren't doing anything with it but whatever. The lift new was 4000ish but its really only worth 2500 at best and with how many shops closing there doors it would be easy for me to acquire one at that price. I agreed to finish the project for 2 reasons.
1: Even though we called it quits she already had a ton of money into the car and I was the only one that could finish it. I didn't really want to put her out on her ass and loose all the money parting the car out. We may have broke up but at that point I still had a heart for her and didn't want her to loose everything she put in.
2: In the beginning I was actually very motivated to finish it because I figured if anything was going to get me noticed in the community it would be this. I have built plenty of sick cars and I have a lot of respect from many people for it but this was going to be the crowning jewel. I figure after its done I might get some more people interested in me doing some work for them. Nothing like this but I have gotten very good at engine performance, wire tucking, brake line tucking, chassis strengthening etc... The project I am will be starting after this I think will get me pretty noticed. I think the Celica's engine bay looks pretty nice but working around a Subaru is what I do best and I am pulling out the stops on this one and its going to completely trump the Celica's engine. Bigger and better I guess. This is one of the reason I want to be done with this car so I can start on it. I have pushed it back almost 3 months just doing little things when I have the time but after the new year I want to start pushing on it hard and get all the fab work started.
It took me about a year and a half to put the 2 cars together and weld them up completely. Its been just under a year since I agreed to finish the big stuff and get it running. I have put countless hours into it and granted I could have gotten it done faster if I just worked on it strait but I have a job, a new life with new demands, and other projects along the way to work on to fund my own projects. Now that its almost done its nice to say that I did it, but looking back I didn't really have a grasp on what it was going to take to get this point and agreeing to do this for the lift + expenses was a dumb move. In my opinion a tip would be a nice parting jester but I highly doubt that would happen... You live and you learn.
Anyways. Got more welding gas so I welded up the last of the floor and painted it. I am pretty sure my braincell reserve is dangerously low but what are ya gonna do. :)
Tonight I'll be putting the roll cage in for the last time and welding up and painting the rear bars. Also I should have the fuel assy back in and tightened down. ready to be wired in and pressure tested. Once the cage is in I can finally install the wiring for good leaving just a few pigtails to swap for headlights, taillights and other things. Sun roof, and doors will probably need a little work but that wasn't part of the deal so I'll be making her a lift of what need to be finished before the car is done for good. She got a sponsor for paint I believe so I am sure much of the interior and some engine bits are going to come out anyways for that so they can address it then.
Thursday I'll be back in the shop welding up the seat brackets and installing the battery tray. Also I'll have the last pieces needed to finish installing the brakes so I can fill them with fluid and pressure test them as well. Then the car will finally after almost a year be rolling off the lift for good.
Hopefully this weekend it will be ready to go. Maybe needing a few little things here and there that I can do after work to have it ready to leave the weekend after Xmas. But we'll see. All I want is to have a spotless shop, an open lift, and closer for the new year. Its a tall order but I have a lot of motivation. Once the car is done I'll leave it to Erin to keep this thread alive but it will be in her hands.
Pics tomorrow of finished roll cage, fuel system, and a few other little things.

I wasn't butt hurt, but when I come to look for updates on this build I don't want to scroll through screen after screen of some other build to get to where I want.
I understand, you wanted to downplay this guy and tell him what he is doing is commonplace and he's not special, I understand. Him swapping a new body on a chassis is just like everyone and their mother cramming jz motors into every platform imaginable and thinking they are the coolest thing since sliced bread.....oh wait, that's what you've been trying to do.

Yeah like I said you live and you learn. I guess I missed the battle in here and that's probably a good thing. I never said it was hard nor was it impossible to weld 2 cars together. If you believe that some of my thunder be taken away from me then that's your opinion but I never said this was the greatest celica ever built nor did I ever say its harder then anyone else that's dropping in another motor or swapping drivetrains. From what I have seen of your build, my way looks to be much easier actually since I didn't have to make all the suspension points from scratch. However I don't really want to talk about your build any further mainly because I don't care what you are doing. I have 1 thread on this forum, I post in 1 place. I am hear to show off a car I have spent a long time working on and if you want come into MY thread and try to show off YOUR project and try to show that what I am doing isn't that great you should have seen people jumping on you flaming you from the beginning. my post was taken out of contex my build was in no way posted i posted a civic that this same thing was done to as a example, saying that this is getting more common with people swapping subi stuff. the only menton of my car was that i thought of doing this to my swap, after seeing yours i wish i had gone that route to save me some work. THIS car is a amazing and expensive build, i wish i could dump the kind of cash going into this car into mine but my build i am having to do on my own with a budget. second i said that you have a nice build but your not building it for you and it seems like there is a ton of work for something your not getting anything out of, like you said you live and you learn
i wish you all the best with your build i think my point was not understood in the right light and im sry for that.

So I got the rest of the floor in an welded up for good. Painted and finished. Its got some hammer marks in it because it warped a bit but its getting covered anyways so it all good.
http://i565.photobucket.com/albums/ss98/Project_Stiletto/032b.jpg
http://i565.photobucket.com/albums/ss98/Project_Stiletto/032c.jpg
Got the roll cage in for good and finished re-doing the rear bars so they would work better. Got the entire fuel system installed for the last time and tightened down so now I just need to wire in the relay and test it for leaks.
Also I got the seat brackets on the drivers and passengers side all finished just waiting for a coat of paint. Started the Battery, Washer tank, and fuse box mounting but it looks like I am going to have to extend the fuse box wiring about 8" to get it where it will fit so you can access it without removing the seat.
http://i565.photobucket.com/albums/ss98/Project_Stiletto/025e.jpg
And Finally, I rounded the weekend out by installing and bleeding the brakes for the last time. No leaks, seems to work great. Had the Calipers painted the same Tuxedo black my Legacy is painted for a little added flair. Rotors are a bit rusty from sitting but they still look sexy.
http://i565.photobucket.com/albums/ss98/Project_Stiletto/019b.jpg
http://i565.photobucket.com/albums/ss98/Project_Stiletto/019c.jpg
Also I got the Radiator fans mounted and wires I just need to re-install it and put the hoses on. Once that's finished mounted for good I can install the P/S tank and finish running the vacuum lines and installed the bumper and hood for the last time.
Anyways once the Xmas thing is over I will finish the last few things and get this thing out of here. The car is ready to come off the lift but I want to leave it on there till I test the fuel system for leaks just to make sure.
Anyways I'll have some more updates after the holidays so stay tuned for the the last couple installments of this project.

Wheel specs. Its running Vold GTMs 19x10.5+21 on 265/35/19s on all 4 corners. IMO it should be running Volk RE30s 18x11 +25 on 295/35/18s since I know they will fit, but she is using what she has.

Lol you act like you signed some sorta contract!
You have the upper hand here since you are the only one that can finish it. You can demand $$$ on top if you wanted to. You can drop the wrench and walk out at anytime. You aren't oblogated for sh!t here.
I would at least make a contract or something saying that for any magazine add, show, etc. that this car is presented in and written about that your name is credited as the builder.

12-26-2010, 11:53 AM
It dosen't have all the panels on it yet but this week it will. I don't know if you know this but the 9.2x or Saabaru isn't very special. Its actually just a WRX wagon with Saab front and rear ends and a nacier interior. All that car has is suspension and wheels. No custom fab work there.
Anywhoo xmas is over, (best one I have ever had) and I got lots of fun gifts to play with but starting tomorrow I will be working out in the shop to finish this thing up by the end of the week if everything goes to plan. At least off the lift and rolled forward on its own weight. Well the car will be getting tuned at Maxwell and I am sure it will go to a meet here or then in Seattle this spring so long as she doesn't move right away. But she is looking to move into the CA area so you both may get your chance.
Okay well here are some new pics. My Camera is being kind of a PITA so for the final pics I am going to get a couple other ones so my last pics of this thing aren't crap. This is the last update before the car is competently finished and ready to go. I believe that day will be Sunday.
Here is the finished battery/ washer tank/ fuse box mounted and ready to go:

Okay now the fun stuff. I finished all the vacuum lines, installed all the extra bits, bled the brakes, clutch, so this is the completed engine bay. Strangely to me it doesn't look that out of place or all the crazy. Nice, clean, and tidy:
http://i565.photobucket.com/albums/ss98/Project_Stiletto/033d.jpg
http://i565.photobucket.com/albums/ss98/Project_Stiletto/033c.jpg

http://i565.photobucket.com/albums/ss98/Project_Stiletto/033e.jpg
I have only had this car on its full weight a couple times and the last time I tried to set the stance a bit more for when it would come off the lift for the last time. Its low but the stance looks pretty good. Even ride height. The front wheels sit nice but because of the rear flairs to rear looks like it could come out another inch. Camber settings are reasonable as well.

No it has been fully assembled and is ready to have its driveshaft done and then be taken to Maxwell for tuning. Once its tuned then I believe it is going to paint.
