View Full Version : Hatchback gas strut failure? It tried to hurt me!

I'm thinking that the gas struts that hold my hatchback up are near to failing. Of course, I came to this realization as the door swung down and tried to decapitate me while I was digging through my trunk.. not a fun thing.

Anyway, have these parts failed on anyone else, and did Toyota cover it? I'm still in my 3 years, 36,000 miles window, so I'm thinking it will.

Also, when having this fixed, I'll also have the shift spring and belt tensioner revision installed -- Has anyone had these done, and did they make any difference?

The belt tensioner and strut in the hatch are both under warranty and should be replaced for free; was done for me. Oh yea for the belt tensioner, my dealer wanted to hear it to see that it's actually a problem. And since I hear the problem with the tensioner in the morning when I warm up the car, I would try to bring it in for service preferably in the morning.
