View Full Version : How important is a torque wrench?

I'm looking to inspect the lift bolts on my 2zz. The TSB calls for 7 ft-lbf and 5 ft-lbf, but the minimum torque setting I can find on a wrench is 10 ft-lbs... So, if hand tighten + 1/4 turn of a wrench fine?

IIRC, if you don't do it right, lift will not work at all. So in this case, it is pretty important. As far as the 1/4 turn, not sure if that will work.

The lift bolts basically just serve to keep the rocker shafts from rotating under oil pressure and load from the rockers during lift. A careful handtight using a small ratchet should be fine.

a torque wrench is as important as your life! but in this instance..a simple hand tightening until its "tight" will suffice

I didnt use a torque wrench on my old celica, and the bolts worked just fine after the install. :gap:

How about the bolts on the valve cover? I'll just have to guesstimate the torque on those, too

same thing...tighten down by hand until they "cinch" MAYBE a 1/4 turn past that. Don't wanna twist em off

Those are pretty easy to strip so be careful with your guesstimates.

One more question: gasket sealant. I've read some guides that say to clean off the old and apply new, then others don't mention it at all. What's the deal?

the valve cover gasket is a large rubber o-ring. there should be no re-sealing.

I use indian head gasket sealer on any and all rubber or cork gaskets for that *extra reassurance ;)

The TSB calls for replacement of sealant at specific points along the surface of contact - why only at a few points, I don't know...

You only need to use the sealant at the two contact points between the timing chain cover and the head. The reason why only those two points need the sealant is because those are the only places where there's a break in the contact surfaces of the gasket and the head/timing chain cover. Oil can seep paste the mating surface because it's not completely even.
