According to the specs, the 5 speed Matrix engine is the same one as the Celica GT right. Then why is it rated at 130 HP Factory? I assume it has to be because it has a different exhaust setup or something like that. In a related note, then why the MR2-Spyder has 138HP and not 40?

Either the three do not share the same engine, or their setups are different and thus the different power levels, or they all have 140 and it is just an issue of insurance/marketing whatever.

And yes, I searched for a topic on this but couldn't find one, so sorry if this has been discussed to death.

I've read that the MR-2 Spyder engine develops less power than the Celica GT engine because of a different, restrictive exhaust.

I also remember reading that the intake manifold is different between the Corolla and the Celica GT (I don't know which intake manifold the Matrix/Vibe gets).

Well, only think I know is that at least the airbox is different. I tried the butterfly mod but this one has it differently set up so that you have to cut it out or something.

My theory was that the engine is the same, so basically if I get a CAI and exhaust, I'll be developing +- the same power as my friend's GT with the same setup. But his GT is an auto, so I was thinking mine would be a little faster since it is a stick, regardless of the extra 300 pounds my car is carrying.

the 03 Corolla gets the plastic manifold also, and a larger throttle body from the previous version of the 1ZZ in the Corolla
