Hi all,

I'm a 19 year old girl and was recently given a 5 Speed Manual 1980 Toyota Celica 2000LT by my dad, it's in really good condition and we look after it. We are and have been the only owners of the Celica and it is well loved.

Yesterday the driver's seat adjuster (the angle adjuster not, the distance from the steering wheel) gave out. I have no idea what to do or how to fix it, can someone please help me?

Most likely the knob cracked, however it could be that something is jammed. Can you spin the knob, or is it just stuck?

it doesn't have a knob it has a leaver :S the leaver still moves and it clicks in but nothing is holding it in place so as soon as you put a little pressure on the back of the seat it just falls backwards

There may be some folks here that can help you out, But prob the best place to seek advice and info is either of these two forums. They are loaded with second and third gen owners that know all the in's and out's of your car. :)

I suspect a spring or cable may have either broken or pulled off. Check underneath the seat.

I suspect a spring

x1000... almost certain. typically when you pull the lever, the seat wants to 'spring' up or fold forward. find out where the lever connects, and follow the trail to where its no longer connected (or connected to air lol). then look for a spring. that's what id do at least

It's fine that you learned how to post pics, but you can only have one image in your signature and each one of the pics in your sig exceeds the max size limit.

I've edited your post and your signature.

Welcome to the boards Sam ( :gap: ). I have to admit that the car looks better than what I was expecting.

I'm siding with 2way's suggestion. You'll have to take the seat out (or try to wrestle yourself into some awkward position) to be able to look at the mechanism around the pivot point to see if a spring is broken or a lock pin.

Whatever you do, remember that the car is considerably older than you so expect things to break if you are not careful and expect them to do so even if you are. :chuckles:

Thanks for the help guys! I'll definitely not be the one pulling anything out i'm not very good with those things lol but i will make sure i pass the information onto whoever does... but the seat still pops forward just doesn't lock into position where you want it...

Try sliding the seat all the way forward on the track, with the seatback also fully reclined forward. Then slide it fully back and push the seatback also back and see if by any chance the thing resets itself. Disclaimer: I'm not responsible if this goes horribly wrong and the seat falls apart. Just trying to help. :D

Cable stuck in release position after you pulled on the lever, so now the back of the seat acts as if the lever is always in the release position. Unbolt the seat - 4 floor bolts, flip it over and dig around to see if there is a cable that popped off the lever, might not be an easy job since the seat upholstrery is in the way most likely...

haha no pics of myself ;) and yea there are different types of P Plates in Queensland a Red P means that you just got your licence and you need to have that for a year, and you get the green one after you have done 12 months on Red and passed a hazard perception test... you have to have the greens for 2 years

great looking car for something 30 years old!

shame about the seat though. Do you reckon you could take it to a mechanic and have them look at it? They might know someone who can fabricate a part to fix the mechanism?

Otherwise are there any Australian Toyota Owners Clubs you could pester? There might be places you can get replacement parts or a breaker's yard where you could buy a driver's seat from an old Celica that was wrecked?

The P plate sucks too.
Over here you need to use a red 'L' plate while learning to drive, but after you've done your test you can take it off.
There is a green 'P' plate some recently passed drivers use to warn others that they've recently passed and still might be a bit nervous... but they are purely optional.

There should be some old timer Toyota clubs in your neck of woods. I know that the Crown at least is fairly big in Australia and there are quite a few people in Brisbane that cater to it. There could be some Celica enthusiasts too. You should be able to get somewhere if you ask around.

If worse comes to worse... get it welded in one position you're comfortable in. :D

Thanks all for your suggestions... a friend of ours is a Classic Ford enthusiast and is keen on getting a replacement because mine is a classic, but we've called most places around and they dont carry parts that go back that far... i've got some rellies down in Woolongong though so we're going to get them to check it out and send it up here if they find anything :)
