View Full Version : Sleeves vs no sleeves on 1zz

So my "friend's" "2zz" turned out to be a 1zz. :marky:
Well anyways my fault for not going to look at it personally, so that's my only option now: 1zz turbo.
I was just planning on doing pistons/rings but on the 1zz I'm not sure...should I upgrade to sleeves too? Or will it be too much on stock block? Again goal is 280-300whp and 240-250whp for autox with t28.
Also wondering, will GTS rods fit the 1zz?

Pistons and rods, you wont need to sleeve.
Get a set of MWR billet rods, they are beefy as hell and cheaper than crowner.

Alright thanks, which compression ration do you think I should go since my numbers aren't too high.
Story is the guy said he had a GT-S and it was a 6speed, but he blew the motor. I'm thinking the guy revved passed the 1zz limiter because he had the TRD cluster, I'm guessing this guy didn't pop the hood or something to see why his 1zz wouldn't hit "lift"...lol

I thought you could over bore a 1zz. You know, take the pistons to 82.5 instead of just 82.

You can overbore to 79.5 without the use of sleeves, 82.5 with sleeves.
FWIW If I were to build my 1zz, I'd go with wiseco 8.8:1 ratio 79.5 bore pistons and MWR billet rods.

Cluster has nothing to do with how far the engine will rev, that's set by the ECU.

why the low compression ratio? ****ty tuners in the greater nashville area? Planning on running 35+ psi?

On stock motor and stock ecu. So, 7,000 was all he had or something like that.

What compression would you run?

something higher than that, 9, 10, 10.5, and maybe 11 if I was just running 8-12 psi. Thats just me though, if 8.8 is what you are comfortable with then stay there.

agreed, go with something like 9.5 or 10. it will keep the off boosst driveability nice, and less boost to make your desired power. Just have a good tune

Where would one find pistons with this compression, other than the stockers?

you can get any compression of wisecos through mwr.

I think wiseco could custom make them.

Great now I feel special. Since I didnt want to sleeve the block, and mwr only offered 11.0:1 and 8.8:1 at 79.5mm, I ordered the 8.8:1.

MWR doesn't make 9's or 10's only 8 and 11
Any ideas where one would be able to reach for a 9? That seems like my magic number so far

Ah, I see. I just guessed by taking a quick look at their products online. Will make the call soon though.

Didn't know that, thanks.....even though I will most likely never build my motor :gap:

well yes and no, the do fit but you would be de stroking the engine alot. You would got from a 1.8L to a 1.6L, but you could install them with some over sized bearings from ACL.

Would it be worth it? Or just buy MWR billet rods?

more liters = more hp easier, stroker is for n/a apps :(, you can do it but it means you have .2L less air displacement to work with......

so what im trying to say is buy billet... :D

Idk about the 1zz sorry.
You can also boost a stoker kit you'll just run lower boost to make the same power as a low comp. engine with higher boost.
I'm pretty sure brads car is a stroker.

MWR doesnt make any pistons, they are a distributor. But yes they can get Wisecos at any compression just about.

Yes my motor is a stroker, so is smaay's, but we have 2zz motors.
