I was just thinking...
Back when everyone and their brother was on a quest to blame Toyota for their misshifts, didn't the issue of the rev-limiter come up. The argument was that Toyota changed the tranny and revlimiter to prevent the misshifts. Now, a year later, we hear less about the misshifts, and every one is *still* blaming Toyota for the revlimiter.
I guess no one is ever satisfied.
I'm just happy that my car is up to 48,500 miles and I've only spent about $150 on unscheduled service.
Thank you Toyota!

We'll see what happens when the '03 Celica comes out.

Same here. I've only spent $100 on unscheduled maint. to get a new foglight after a rock shattered the original. I've been very pleased with the quality, aside from the cheap plastic on the interior.

Hmm, I am at 33,000+ miles, and I have spent $0 on unscheduled maintainance. Unless you consider oil changes and new tires unschedule service.

So are you saying that the lower rev-limit was the reason for less misshifts? I disagree. The revised shift-gates and increased awareness by Celica drivers of the misshifting phenomenon are more likely the reasons. The lower rev-limit is and has always been pure bull$hit.
Even Toyota USA finally realized this and complained to Toyota Japan to raise the rev-limit back up its rightful place for 2003. That in itself is an admission that they fuked up.

No, that's not what I'm saying. I'm saying a lot of the folks that misshifted claimed the lower rev-limit was Toyota's solution to the supposed problem (thus admission that there was a misshift problem).

Well, technically, there WAS a misshift problem. What was always disputed was whether it was the driver's fault, Toyota's fault, or maybe a little bit of both.

I've been able to avoid misshifts by properly adjusting the nut behind the steering wheel. Hopefully that nut stays where it belongs.

What nut is that autoxr? How does it prevent misshifts? I'm really lost here...

It's a 6 foot high 165 lb nut . It is also the most critical moving part in a car. it can make or break the performance, and most other things associated with the car.
Get it now?

BTW, about this thread, toyota admits that the 7800rpm limiter was a 'mistake'. whomever over there did it is probably feeling the heat cuz of all the attention it got, especially since it can't stop the engine from revving over safe levels during a misshift. (500rpm lower rev limiter won't cut it from 12,000rpm to 9,000rpm, maybe 11,000rpm if you're lucky which will still blow **** up)

I think the sucky drivers all blaimed it on the car and sold it by now, or got better at shifting and are more experienced with the car by this point in time. better be after 2-3 years......jesus

Point of interest:
There are some of us that never misshifted that still hate the rev limiter. And its not so much that we "blame" Toyyota for it (It's clearly their design, there is no question of responsibility) Its just that we would like our cars to perform as well and be as fun to drive as the 00 and 01. I don't think thats a unreasonable REQUEST even if it may be an unreasonable demand.
Of course I also wish they would have put a 250HP AWD powertrain in my GTS and I don't think I'm getting that either... :)

LOL...yeah, and they probably told their equally low-skilled friends not to buy Celicas. I love my car. Other than the tensioner problem, I've had it for 25 months, 29,000 miles and $0 on unscheduled maintenance. i still love driving it every day.
